All Things 2023-2024 Minnesota Timberwolves In-Season Thread

Conely has got to be getting worn down. Everyone ragged on Thibs for his minutes, turns out finch is the same guy.

Conley is averaging 29 min per game, which is where he was at in Utah. Ant is the highest at 35 mpg, with everyone else being at 33 mpg or lower. This is nowhere near Thibs level, where he regularly played his best players at 36-37+ mpg

Wolves have zero turnovers in the 1st Quarter. They commit 8 in the 2nd Quarter but hold onto a 48-44 lead over the Rockets at the Half.

Edit: Wolves lead 80 - 64 after 3.

Timberwolves blowing out Houston and leading big in the 4th. Chris Finch will coach the Western Conference all star team.

Anthony Edwards, Timberwolves get message in second half, trounce Rockets 111-90

Anthony Edwards scored 22 of his 32 points in the third quarter, quickly turning a four-point halftime lead into a rout.

Following yet another gut-wrenching loss and blown fourth-quarter lead Friday, Minnesota finally exorcized its second-half demons, taking down Houston 111-90 at Target Center on Sunday evening. The Wolves led by just four at the break, but dominated the Rockets in the third and fourth quarters on both ends of the floor.

Anthony Edwards led the way with a monster 22-point third quarter that allowed the Timberwolves to pull away for good. He racked up 32 on the night to go with six rebounds, an assist, a block and a steal. He was aided by double-doubles from Rudy Gobert, who had 17 points and 13 boards, as well as Karl-Anthony Towns, who had 14 and 10.

With the win, Minnesota reestablishes themselves atop the Western Conference at 35-15. The Timberwolves' fifth win in seven games also clinched All-Star Game coaching honors for Chris Finch and his staff. They'll head to Indy following a four-game road trip, where they'll be joined by All-Star reserves in Edwards and Towns..

Congrats to Coach Finch and his coaching staff...this team hasn't had a whole lot of bright spots through it's history. This is a bright spot. I just wish Finch could get some defense out of his all star team. The game has been unwatchable recently.

1) Did anyone notice how many empty courtside seats there were and in the lower levels? I had not seen that before.
2) Anyone know why 50 Cent was at the game?

I noticed at the start of the 3rd and was wow'd but it seemed to fill back up after a bit. Everyone must have went to the concourse at halftime?

1) 50 Cent has been in a partnership with the Wolves for about a year now.

2a) Had tickets for years. Unless the fans really are excited about the game they arrive late and leave early. Also there has never been enough concessions and workers to handle the crowd. The cameras try and stay away from those shots.

2b) Oddly enough considering how many arrive late and/or leave early, few will leave before the Quarter is over to go up and get their concessions or go to the rest room. Thus guaranteeing that people won't get back to their seats when action starts again. Same thing happens at Gopher games too.

From Joh K at The Athletic.

The Wolves have been making calls looking to inject the second unit with another primary ballhandler and/or a shooter/scorer to help their fledgling offense. Minnesota has a championship-level defense that has ranked No. 1 in the league nearly all season long. The 108.2 rating is almost 2.5 points per 100 possessions better than second-place Cleveland, an enormous chasm.

The issue for much of the season has been their offense. Despite having Anthony Edwards and Karl-Anthony Towns, two dynamic scorers, in the starting lineup, the Wolves are ranked 19th in the league in offensive rating (114.1). The ranking plummets to 27th (110.2) in the fourth quarter. It is the number that keeps president of basketball operations Tim Connelly and coach Chris Finch up at night...

The Wolves have a grueling schedule the rest of the way filled with back-to-backs and few breaks. Adding someone to help take some of the burden off of Conley and allowing him to stay fresh for the playoffs would benefit a team trying to get beyond the first round for the second time in franchise history..

Buyout market

For the first time in ages, the Timberwolves could find themselves as a viable home for players who hit the buyout market. They have minutes to offer on a team that is in contention and also have some of their midlevel exception money left to spend to sweeten the pot beyond the veteran minimum contract that many buyout candidates sign with new teams..

Chris Paul would be a buyout pipedream if the GSW completely crumble which is unlikely.

Four 3’s for Towns in the 1st half
23 points for Edwards
69-47

The Wolves Offense was sizzling in the 1st Half, albeit against a very overmatched and under manned Bulls teams. Fun to watch, at least for Wolves fans. Wolves even got their share of foul calls too. Though Edwards and Jim Peterson would disagree.

Timberwolves doing everything it can to blow this 23 points lead. Wolves lead by 1 in the 4th.

Wolves Offense just disappeared in the 2nd Half. They are throwing the game away. Needed a clutch 3 from Towns and a couple of stops to go to O.T. at 115

Turns out a "Hero Ball" only offense and a complete lack of help from the bench isn't a good way to play winning basketball.

We've got both the Wolves and the Gophers on TV. Hope the Gophers can pull it out.

Edit: 129-123 Chicago

Trade McDaniels and Slomo for an offensive player.

Please do this.

and here's Bobby Vee with a (slightly altered) musical message for the T-Wolves:

Come back when you grow up, girl
You're still livin' in a paper-doll world
Livin' ain't easy, winning's twice as tough
So come back, baby, when you grow up

This team will be very lucky to be a 4 seed. At the start of the season I'd have taken a 4 seed but man are they difficult to watch right now.

How? Have you already forgot about McDaniels contract?
It kicks in next year. Maybe some team sees something.

4 fouls last night, 4 turnovers, and 1 flipping rebound in 40 minutes. he's worthless in tight games. HE CAN'T SCORE WHEN THE DEFENSE IS RAMPED UP.

Try to unload or we are stuck with this contract for years.

Yeah, the first part is what other teams see too. That plus his contract, is why McDaniel can't be traded unless it's for an even worse player who has an even worse contract.

Go ahead and check around and if you find someone with a similar contract who's better and whose team would be willing to trade for McDaniels, don't post it here. Send it to Tim Connelly.

Maybe he hasn't already called that mythical team.

It is crazy how bad he has been this year. A few games here and there where you see the defense, but his offense is putrid. Decision-making is scary bad as well.

I agree with your disappointment in McDaniels and how in the world can a guy that's 6'10 average less than 3 rebounds per game? Quite possibly the lowest basketball IQ in the league.

However, he has a "poison pill" in his current deal that prevents him from being traded until this summer.
