All Things 2022 Minnesota Timberwolves Off-Season Thread

I like it. Just have to have some assurances he will actually play.
I'm sure the Nets got assurances that he would play.

Harden drove the Rockets crazy, then he drove the Nets crazy, now it's the Sixers. If you told the Nets that they were essentially trading Harden for one year of a contract driven DLo (with Simmons being the pass through) they could probably live with it.

A Timberwolves player-by-player look ahead

The Timberwolves' season ended Friday night with a loss in Game 6 to Memphis at Target Center, a defeat that eliminated them from the NBA playoffs.

The Wolves gained the seventh seed in the Western Conference with a 46-36 regular season, and now head to an offseason to maintain or grow their status in the league.

This seems really idiotic. He's good.

How about DLO and Vanderbilt for Brogdon and Turner?

Pacers probably say no because they can probably get more for Turner. But to get Brogdan off of the payroll with 3 years left and maximize cap space for the following offseason could do it.

I have nothing against Marney, but Benz was probably the best local play by play guy in MN. I don't understand the move at all.

Benz, Bremer, PA and LaPanta are all good. When I listen to other broadcast crews on NBA League Pass I can't believe how good we have it in this market.

Nobody at Bally's liked Benz. Neither did I.

I just wish Jim Pete would follow him out the door.

The 76ers made a very bad decision when they traded for Simmons. Now he needs back surgery and he still has 3 years and $113m left on his contract.

Brooklyn Nets swingman Ben Simmons will require three to four months of rehabilitation after undergoing back surgery on Thursday, but is expected to be fully recovered to return to the court well ahead of preseason training camp in September, sources told ESPN on Wednesday.

Simmons, 25, is undergoing a microdiscectomy procedure to address pain located in a herniated disk in his lower back, the Nets said Wednesday in a release.

The decision to undergo the surgery was reached after "consultation with multiple back specialists," the team said.

Despite several attempts that ultimately resulted in setbacks, Simmons never played a game for the Nets following a Feb. 10 trade with the Philadelphia 76ers. Simmons had planned to return for Game 4 of the Nets' Eastern Conference first-round series against the Boston Celtics, but a week-plus of pain-free days ended with pain soreness on the eve of Brooklyn's elimination..

Wolves dodged a bullet!

What a weird and dumb decision.

Howl Wolves!!
Is it a cost saving thing? I only watched the play-off games mainly but he seemed quite good and this seems to be getting universally condemned. If the Twins offed Dick Bremer it would be 50/50.

I think it depends on what direction they go with the replacement.

In other words, what does Bally's want or expect from the position that Benz was not providing?

If - as some have suggested - they want the PbP guy to be more of a homer, I will be watching with the sound off.

Rumors are it will be Marney Gelner. I have not heard her do PBP except a couple minutes of Lynx games but she's supposedly pretty good. I'm betting some will be upset though.

saw a tweet from Reusse claiming he asked Marney and she said she wasn't interested.

.............................................get ready to boo...............................................

Hey, maybe Dave Lee is available?

I've seen speculation that Sloane Martin (wife of Matthew Coller) will be strongly considered.

Minnesota Timberwolves

First Round: Lost to Memphis, 4-2
Key Free Agents: F Taurean Prince (UFA); F Josh Okogie (RFA); C Naz Reid (team option); G Jaylen Nowell (team option)
Key Injuries: None
Draft Status: Own first- and second-round picks; second-round picks from Washington and Denver
Cap Exceptions: Non-taxpayer MLE; Bi-Annual, $4.75 million TPE (Ricky Rubio trade w/Cleveland)

99 Problems: Minnesota’s issues look more mental than physical. The Wolves’ multiple fourth-quarter collapses against Memphis in the first round speak to a team that not only didn’t execute down the stretch but didn’t look at all comfortable with the process. A lot of teams overcome that with more postseason experience. But not all of them. You can’t just assume Minnesota will. Expectations can be a bear for a young team that’s just tasted its first real success as a group.

What to Fix: Picking up Reid’s and Nowell’s options seems like no-brainers; the rest of Minny’s nucleus returns for ’22, with Chris Finch able to mix and match. The Wolves had one of the league’s most lethal five-man transition lineups in the league this season — Anthony Edwards, D’Angelo Russell, Patrick Beverley, Jaden McDaniels and Karl-Anthony Towns added 5.6 points per game off steals, per Cleaning the Glass. But KAT has to get better at defending without fouling. He commits silly ones at inopportune times. That is fixable. He has to fix it.

I always enjoy the Dave Lee posts that provide and example of Lee calling basketball.

I think Okogie is gone. I'm torn on Naz Reid. He does some nice things, but basically, he's Karl Towns lite - a big who shoots a lot of 3's and doesn't give you a lot in terms of defense and rebounding.

that is a spot where I think they can look for an upgrade.

Prince is OK at the right price. Nowell doesn't play enough for me to have a solid opinion.
and the end of the bench with guys like Jake Layman provide squat.

Bolmaro is an interesting situation. apparently did some nice things in the G League, but hasn't really had a chance to show whether he can play at a higher level.

but D-Lo is the first domino. Once they make a decision on him, that will trigger what happens as they go further down the roster.

Don't go there. I am still happy I never have to watch him in a Wolves uniform again.

Andrew Wiggins

39 minutes, 17 points, 10 rebounds, 1 assist, 1 steal, 2 blocks, 2 turnovers, 7-for-13 shooting, 1-for-5 threes, 2-for-3 free throws, 59.4% TS, +12

If you need to name someone a player of the game, it’s Wiggins. It’s really not particularly close, either, and I don’t want to think about where the Warriors would be in this game — or series — without Wiggs.

His defense was phenomenal, yet he didn’t commit a single foul. He dedicated himself fully to the glass, and played a massive role — I’d posit the biggest role — in the Warriors winning that battle.

He didn’t make his threes, but his offense was very strong other than that. Just another exceptional game from Wiggins, who has been remarkable this series.

Grade: A

Post-game bonus:
Led the team in plus/minus.

He never would have done that for the Wolves. Just wasn't meant to be.
