All Things 2022 Minnesota Timberwolves Off-Season Thread

in the NBA, it often turns into a case of "I'll take your bad contract off your hands, but you have to take my bad contract back in return."

If they move Russell, the money has to match. And they still need a main PG. J-Mac is a solid backup, but I don't think you want him playing 30+ minutes a game.

Plus, the Wolves still have a huge need for a backup C or PF with size who can rebound and play defense.

a lot of teams in the West had major injury issues this year. The Wolves might have to improve next year to just get back in the playoffs again.

Beasley and Russell need to go.
I dont' think anyone gets traded until deadline unfortunately. Teams won't want Russell until they decide their teams suck in the middle of the season and decide to blow it up by trading for some expirings. I would like to see this team get a real PG, like Brogdon or Van Fleet.

McDaniels hopefully improves enough to be the #3.

Any chance the Grizz are open to trading Clarke? :)

Do you think Tyus Jones could he effective for 32 minutes a game? He's a wonderful backup, and he could come cheap.

Yes. I'm not asking for Magic or Isiah Thomas here. I need a player to calm things down and make some open jumpers. I just dont know if Tyus can be had for the mid level, which is all the wolves have

I deleted my comment because I didn't realize where the MLE is it.

It might be possible to get Jones or Brunson for the MLE.

If you do that and move Russell for a quality big man, then you're looking at a potential 55 win team.

I don't think you can. He's a $10+ million player. At his age and league stature, he should be banking the biggest deal he can find.
thats why a trade is in order to make it happen. I just dont think anyone is ready to trade for an expiring during the offseason, just too much hope

where is the MLE?

Is it possible that KAT just played his best year in the NBA…and has reached a perfect time to trade him?

I'll consider it :)

I just dont know for what? Towns is the type of player that I'm not sure you'll ever get equal value back for. You'd almost have to go for a youth and draft picks type trade

Jalen Brunson could be a good fit without breaking the bank.

Jones' numbers this season are pretty similar to what they were in his last Wolves season. He's a really solid backup but not a starter in the league.

I love Jalen Brunson. I really wanted the Wolves to draft him at 20 in 2018, but they took Okogie instead. Maybe that had something to do with his dad who was an assistant with the Wolves resigning a month before the draft.

  • A number of rival teams expect the Timberwolves to attempt to trade guard D’Angelo Russell this offseason, according to Stein. Russell, who is good friends with Karl-Anthony Towns, will be on an expiring $31.4MM contract in 2022/23 after struggling in Minnesota’s playoff series vs. Memphis.
Howl Wolves!!

Timberwolves fans hope Jaden McDaniels is on a Kawhi Leonard-like career path. The two will train together this offseason

Jaden McDaniels entered the NBA offseason with his confidence at an all-time high. In the biggest game of the season, in a do-or-die Game 6 against Memphis last week, the 21-year-old delivered in the ways you would expect a star player to do.

That’s not to say McDaniels is a star — of course he’s not — but it did reaffirm the belief he could one day become one.

The 6-foot-9 forward tallied 24 points on 8-for-9 shooting, making five three-pointers and hammering a thunderous slam, to go with four rebounds and monstrous late-game block. Every impact play provided its own little taste of his potential.

“That’s my dawg,” teammate Anthony Edwards said. “He’s just nice. A lot of people don’t know it. He’s just nice. He can do everything. Once his confidence gets like mine, it’s going to be trouble, for sure.”

This offseason could be a big one for McDaniels, as Minnesota is likely to continue shoving more onto his plate next season. He’ll certainly have good examples from which to learn this summer. Patrick Beverley said he’s bringing the 21-year-old with him to train with himself and … Kawhi Leonard.

“Let him see how real pros work consistently every day,” Beverley said. “And to bring all of that with the new experience, to bring all that back to training camp to try and get something going.”

The Timberwolves likely couldn’t draw up a better scenario.

“Really just going to learn and soak up the game. I’ve talked to Kawhi before I got to the NBA, so I kind of know him a little bit. Really going there to learn from one of the greats. It’ll just be an eye-opener for me to see how hard he works because of where he’s at right now,” McDaniels said. “He plays, scores at all levels. Plays defense. Can guard anyone. He’s a person I watch.”

On the one hand, never fall in love with an asset, any asset. OTOH, the management is going to do whatever it can to make sure that the team doesn't move back or go sideways next year. Who or what are you going to get for the third best center in the league that will position the wolves to achieve a better record and a playoff series win in 2022-2023?

Jaden is 25lbs of muscle and 500 jump shots/day in the gym from stardom.

Contract-wise, D-Lo probably isn't even worth half of the maximum he could get. But he isn't likely to settle after hitting the jackpot with his last max deal.

On the flip side, the Wolves were 39-26 during the regular season when Russell played and just 7-10 when he didn't. So often this year, their fortunes mirrored those of their point guard. When he made shots — as he did in that play-in game against the Clippers — the Wolves felt unstoppable. When he didn't, they sputtered, particularly late in games.

I can't say the Wolves would be better off in 2022-23 if they traded Russell this off season because the player(s) they got in return would have their own set of issues.

But it comes down to this: Russell can be part of a playoff core. But at his salary he can't be part of a championship core.

Not when Karl-Anthony Towns is about to get rich. Not when you are going to have to pay Anthony Edwards and possibly Jaden McDaniels in a couple years.

So you want to trade Russell this offseason for a player who either is useful and is on an expiring contract or who is useful and you know you want to keep beyond one season.

Good luck finding a trading partner for a deal like that..

I don't see how a trade that benefits the Wolves is possible at this point. His playoff struggles will make what already is a tough task much tougher IMO.

Towns is third best center in NBA. I'd say second if Jokic wasnt allowed to mug people. After top 3, pretty big drop off.

Towns drives me crazy, but you have to try and win with him. I would be shocked if wolves could get all star in prime for towns.

Only thought is Jaylen Brown? If Celts flunkie out maybe they would be interested? Even then im.not sure i do it. And towns drives me up the wall

Yep. Most of that article was true, but none truer than that last line:

"Good luck finding a trading partner for a deal like that.".

its going to be someone trying to get rid of their trash. Wolves would have to be pretty certain they could turn that trash into treasure.

Wolves best bet is waiting for the deadline. Some teams will have thrown in the white towel.

So who's another team's trash? Simmons. I'm sure the Nets would love to get off of the $90M left on the contract. It would be a high risk/high reward move by the wolves.

I like it. Just have to have some assurances he will actually play.
