Souhan - so take it for what it's worth:
The Vikings' offseason began with optimism because of the rebuilt defensive line and the potential rebuilding of the offensive line. The return of Danielle Hunter alone would have made a difference; adding Dalvin Tomlinson and Michael Pierce to a group that mimicked roadkill last year could make the defensive front a team strength again.
That kind of optimism has not persisted.
Let's recount what has happened elsewhere on the roster of late:
Cornerback Jeff Gladney, a first-round draft pick, was released after he was indicted on a felony domestic violence charge. His fellow young starting cornerback, Cam Dantzler, has regressed.
This year's first-round pick, Christian Darrisaw, has been injured for much of training camp. The current starter at Darrisaw's future position, left tackle, is Rashod Hill. Saturday, Hill whiffed badly on a one-on-one block, leading to a sack.
Linebacker Anthony Barr has been missing practice without explanation. The last time the Vikings enabled this kind of medical mystery, Hunter missed an entire season.
Quarterback Kirk Cousins outed himself as an anti-vaxxer and the Vikings were declared the least-vaccinated team in the NFL, angering Zimmer.
The Vikings do not have a backup quarterback. Jake Browning played horribly in two preseason games. Kellen Mond is the future backup but if Cousins is injured or comes down with some sort of virus, Mond is not ready to take over.
Asked about bringing in a veteran, Zimmer mentioned the Vikings' "monetary situation."
The Vikings may have done the impossible, and made us miss Sean Mannion.
While the Vikings were dealing with each Crisis Of The Week, the Packers brought quarterback Aaron Rodgers back into the fold, making Green Bay again the prohibitive favorite to win the NFC North.
The Vikings' latest kicker, Greg Joseph, made a 49-yard field goal but missed a 51-yarder. With a different team, that might not be newsworthy. For a Vikings kicker, it is the black cloud spewing lightning on the horizon.
The Vikings' only touchdown of the preseason was scored by backup linebacker Troy Dye. Zimmer said he may play some of his offensive starters in the final preseason game, a decision that reeks of worry.
Zimmer has not presided over consecutive losing seasons with the Vikings. His team finished 7-9 last year.
This might be the season that determines whether Zimmer, General Manager Rick Spielman and Cousins are long for the organization, and the last few weeks have been ominous.
The final scores of preseason games are meaningless. That doesn't mean that what happens in August is meaningless.
Good teams tend to stay or get healthy, build an esprit de corps and get their key offensive players on the same page, even if only in practice. Saturday night, Zimmer was trying to explain why the first-team passing offense has been misfiring in practice.

One question I have is -- why the hell are we still F'ing around with Dozier??? We know he has zero future. Davis is the future, so why is Dozier taking away reps from him??

The Vikings typically keep two quarterbacks on the active roster, and the passers have done little in the preseason to make them keep another. Browning and Stanley (or Etling) could end up on the practice squad as third and fourth options, especially given the continued expanded practice squad rules that allow for 16 players.
Backfield (5)
RB Dalvin Cook, RB Alexander Mattison, FB C.J. Ham, RB Ameer Abdullah, RB Kene Nwangwu
Released: FB Jake Bargas, RB A.J. Rose Jr.
The only question here is whether the Vikings keep Abdullah, the reliable veteran specialist and third-down back. They could cut him to open a spot for a younger, developing player, but I have them keeping his experience for their green special teams. Both Bargas and Rose Jr. have done enough to warrant practice squad jobs.
Receivers (6)
Adam Thielen, Justin Jefferson, Dede Westbrook, K.J. Osborn, Chad Beebe, Ihmir Smith-Marsette
Released: Dan Chisena, Whop Philyor, Myron Mitchell
Chisena brings speed on special teams, and that might be enough to keep him if the team finds a cut elsewhere. Smith-Marsette is coming off a strong game as a returner against the Colts. Should coaches trust him for one or both jobs, that could make Abdullah expendable.
Tight ends (3)
Irv Smith Jr., Tyler Conklin, Brandon Dillon
Released: Zach Davidson, Shane Zylstra
Tight ends remain a key component of the Vikings offense under first-year coordinator Klint Kubiak. That means Davidson is a likely practice squad candidate if they don't keep four on the active roster.

Coaches quickly decided on Udoh as the starting right guard in camp, casting doubt on Dozier's job security.

How coaches weigh performance on special teams will be critical in making decisions like the bottom of the secondary depth chart, where Metellus gets the edge here (over a receiver like Chisena). But if coaches think Chisena is the better on coverage phases, maybe he gets the nod over a fellow special teamer like Metellus or Abdullah.
Specialists (3)

Joseph has had a strong enough camp, and Colquitt rebounded nicely against the Colts, meaning the Vikings might just roll with these three specialists. But they're always just a trade or waiver claim away from that changing.

Vikings to sign their old friend, Everson Griffen. Apparently not impressed enough with the progress of Weatherly and Wonnum, or any of this year's DE draft picks.
I'm totally okay with this move. I'm sure it's a low-cost signing, he'll play a pretty limited amount of snaps but in that capacity I could see him making an impact as a situational player.

Must be going to cut Weatherly then? I can't see them cutting Wonnum, or either of their draft picks at DE, but could easily be wrong there.

Except for he has gone bananas before so it could be high risk.
I doubt they're paying him very much, so he can easily be cut. There's not really any risk unless you think he's going to try to off Cousins or something.

Right. And apparently some fans are under the impression that Cousins is the only non-vaxed guy on the Vikings roster or in the NFL. Cool narrative though, makes for good copy

Kirk Cousins is - according to one website - the 8th highest-paid player in the NFL. And he is - right now - the only viable QB on the Vikes' roster. If he has to miss a regular-season game due to covid issues, the Vikings lose that game. that's the issue.
Sure, if Smith or Thielen has to miss a game, that hurts the Vikes. But, if Cousins misses a game, there is no one to take his place. No one. and he knows it.

I will be shocked if the Vikings don't obtain a different back-up QB before week 1. Mond is not ready and Browning has been awful. Sean Mannion seems like he's 3rd string in Seattle. It would probably take little/nothing to re-acquire him if he's not cut first. Not my first choice, but he knows the offense etc.

Yup. Lots of changed to the rosters in the league in the next 7-10 days as the teams get down to 53. I would expect the Vikings to be combing the waiver wire for released players that could fit. Cousins has been amazingly durable in his career but it's hard to plan for that to continue
Personally, I'd go for:
Nick Mullens-3rd string with Philly. Looked pretty good at times with SF.
Nick Foles-Not sure that's feasible salary-wise unless he gets cut
Brett Rypien-3rd string with Denver. Won his only start last year.

8-10 coming in fast this season and that assumes they beat the bears on the last game of the year. That is a game that has not always gone well for the Vikings.

So you're telling me that:
Harrison, Kenricks, maybe Barr (but who even knows how much better than Dye/Surratt he'll end up being this year??), Peterson, and Hunter on defense
Jefferson, Theilen, Cook, Conklin (think he'll contribute some, but not a game-changer by any means) on offense
(have high hopes for Darrisaw and Davis, but frankly don't think either will be game-chagers over Hill and Udoh this season)
are going to take that dogs__t 6-11 team from last night and make them 12-5?

They had Davis at 2nd team RG .... but that was with Samia out and so Dozier playing LG.

It was an ugly preseason. But Cook, Jefferson, Hunter and Barr played zero snaps. Thielen and Kendricks played played almost none.
It will once again come down to the o line and keeping Cousins upright (and not in quarantine).
