All four playoff winners were on home field

So you want teams to back and play more meaningless bowl games instead of 1st round playoff games? Totally illogical. This is best thing that ever happened to cfb. They should actually go to 16 teams so everyone plays in 1st round and can host a game.

In 5 yrs ppl will look back and see that hosting a cfp game will be an amazing part of the experience.
I want good games. The next round will likely be a dud as well. The national playoff is a crap product. I would much rather see a conference playoff.

It's cheap content for ESPN and they really do get great ratings over the holidays. People like them.
Yeah, not sure why this is a tough concept to grasp. Sure the majority of the bowl games are garbage matchups between mediocre teams....but that isn't the point. It is something to watch during the holidays. Doesn't need to be anything more than that.

Saw another decent idea

Have 11-12 play to play 1
Have 9-10 play to play 2
Have 7-8 play to play 3
Have 5-6 play to play 4

Seed straight 1-12 with no auto byes.

ASU host Clemson to play Oregon (Rose)
Boise to host SMU to play Georgia (Sugar)
Tennessee host Indiana to play Texas (Fiesta)
ND host tOSU to play Penn State (Peach)

It’s already not a true bracket.

Possibly. Still it's a different task, keeping whatever needs to be open for infrastructure/dorms for a few extra days after finals before Christmas as opposed to after the holiday and potentially a few weeks before 2nd Semester starts.

I would guess a moot point for Texas/Austin.
Do they put antifreeze in the water lines of dorms and shut off heat in the dorms north of the Mason Dixon line? I guarantee no FBS school will complain about hosting a CFB playoff in December or January.

I'm not exactly sure what they do, but yeah for buildings not being used for 3-4 weeks in the winter they are shut down.

It was one of the reasons cited that they would allow the host team to move the site somewhere else (if they choose).

Perhaps some stadiums are not even capable of hosting games in sustained sub-freezing weather.

Staffing such a large on campus event between Christmas & New Year's is also a logistical challenge.

If I’m looking at that correctly, 2 of the 5-8 teams will not advance, while 2 of the 9-12 teams will. Most likely 2 blowout games are being moved to the second round.

Just another not perfect solution. Does it really matter?

Too many games, too much greed and the permanent loss of the tradition and sentimentality of college football. I would like to see the actual attendance numbers, not the said tickets sold. The whole weekend was weird. They should pick a neutral site and play all 4 games in two days first round. Those who want a 4 game pass could view all the games. Friday, noon and 7pm, Saturday, same times. Just like a regional basketball tourney. More and more, people want to watch on TV.

You want the whole regular season to be less meaningful? His point wasn’t illogical it’s just a different opinion. The larger you make the playoff the more you’re going to see top players sitting out of it.

It looked like every seat (or close to it) was filled this past weekend.

It sure seem

It looked that way to me as well. And all crowds seemed to be into the game like it was a big deal. Giving the fans a home playoff game felt more like a real college atmosphere than most bowl games do.

More neutral fans as 1983 suggested would turn the games into more of a snoozefest once they get to a double digit lead.

One thing that came out of the first round across all four games is how much the home teams appreciated hosting the games and how electric the atmosphere was despite the fact none of the games were nail biters.

First round on campus was a resounding, thundering success.

But yeah, let’s “fix” this and take that away.

HOT TAKE - I would actually be completely OK with NCAA Men's Basketball returning to Home Sites for the Rounds of 64 & 32.

Sure it might take away from the excitement upset possibilities for 1st & 2nd rounds, but it would put more meaning into the Regular Season/Conference games as teams would be pushing to a Top 16 seed.

Works well for NCAA Women (and Volleyball), IMO.

NEVER GOING TO HAPPEN THOUGH.

Would love it for hockey.

I wonder about that too with some stadiums. Obviously places like SDSU and the Montana schools have hosted FCS playoff games in some pretty brutal weather, but the FBS season has never gone this late at home sites. I'm not sure what the situation would be for places like Iowa City, Madison, Lincoln, Laramie, Indiana etc. Obviously Illinois and Minnesota hosted NFL teams on an interim basis, so we know those stadiums can be used in the winter. I think both Michigan and MSU hosted college hockey outdoor games.

It should have happened for hockey a long time ago. The attendance for first round playoff regionals are embarassing at best.
I'm not against that either, but if you look back at Gopher Hockey history 70s/80s/early 90s some of the smallest crowds at Old Mariucci/Williams Arena were for NCAA Tournament Games (2 Game Total Goal Series or Best of 3).

The issue was the games were not part of the Season Ticket package. Short advance notice, often on Spring Break with students gone or fans already on a Vacation, crowds were well below 50%.

It's a big reason why they went to the Regional format to begin with.

Seems like a lot of red herrings here. It's not like there are no sporting events during that time. Seems to staff those without problems.
