All about Max Brosmer Making the Cut

Hey, gopherbadgerman... a question for you:

You stated that Brosmer was already good when he got here. Just how good was he?

Was he, say, oh, I don't know... in the Top Third of the B1G when he got here?
Borderline. Which is what he was at the end of the year.

Do you think he was good when he got here?

I gave fleck credit but call a spade a spade, he was a one year player who was good and well developed when he got here, and got better as the year went on.

He was not an elite B10 QB IMO. He was good but not elite. Could not throw a deep ball at all. Maybe it was the WRs? I’m not sure I’m not a pro scout. He certainly looks better now than when he was here. Don’t really know what bone you are trying to pick…

I thought he’d be a middle 1/3 QB. He was slightly better than that.

Opposite actually. Wentz is a one year stop gap backup. Assuming Max continues to progress, he's the long term #2/developmental QB. They couldn't roll with JJM and Max. They need someone with experience to jump in short term if needed.

Max shouldn't be #2 currently with zero NFL experience. But these moves speak a lot to how the staff views him.
Hey Max,
Just FYI. Being a long-term backup QB is the best position in all of NFL - you get the money, get the fun, don't get hurt, and may (like me) get a ring, all for watching the games from the best seat in the house. If they do put you in, go for a quick "turf toe" injury so you can get back on the sideline where it's safe.
Sincerely,
Travaris Jackson

I am starting to wonder how many people remember last years offensive line. While Ertsery was great, the rest of the OL struggled. Plus, the WR's did not create a ton of separation. If Brosmer was not on the team, we would have been lucky to have won 6 games. He consistently hit WR's where only they could catch the ball and made the right play calls quickly. What we are seeing now is simply a progression from what he was. Brosmer was a top 3 B1G QB on a bottom 6 B1G offense.

He was not a top 3 big ten QB by any metric. He was top 6-8 sure but not top 3.

He made the gophers better for sure, but please tell me how he was a top 3 QB. Maybe you know something no one else does?

Not saying you are wrong, but which QBs were for sure better?

I agree .... although ... man I hope he held onto that money.

Wouldn't be the first guy to blow it.
Wentz was a HS Valedictorian, an Academic All-American, and got his degree with a 4.0. It doesn't guarantee he's good with money...but he's not exactly Adrian Peterson.

The Vikings might have the smartest QB room in the NFL.

Yep. Hate to say it but our line was soft and inconsistent and we had one guy on the outside who could create any real separation. Max with real NFL talent around him could be scary!

Hmmm... would the following be an accurate summary?

— He was good already. Just... not that good.

— Well developed when he got here. But borderline.

— Now he's good. But not great. Can't throw deep. But he seems to have improved since he left the Gophers.

— He was already well developed at New Hampshire. But he improved. Not that much, though.

— You give Fleck credit. But not much credit.

In other words: Ping, yes... but, also pong. And that's how we "call a spade a spade."

Just out of curiosity though, would you agree that last year's offensive staff did not properly utilize him (Brosmer) in the offense until say the 2nd half of Michigan or later on in the season?

Incredibly disingenuous?

So Max was already playing at an NFL level when he left New Hampshire? That was your take, now and at the time?

If that's the case, you must have been thrilled when Fleck and the Gophers recruited him to finish his college career here! I'd have to assume you give Fleck a lot of credit for finding Max, and for convincing him to finish his college career here at Minnesota, seeing as how you saw Max — coming out of New Hampshire — as already an NFL-level talen
QB is a position where talented but not certain day one or two draft guys with eligibility remaining, especially G6/FCS guys, see a lot more upside to taking the route Brosmer or a guy like Mark Gronowski (South Dakota State and now at Iowa) took. A seven figure pay day and potentially improve odds of getting drafted, or getting drafted higher, if a projected late rounder.

Max almost certainly would have been signed as an UDFA out of NH. No telling if that scenario would have been a favorable to him as the Gopher to Vikings route. But by some accounts, he pocketed more as a Gopher than he will as an UDFA QB rookie and is on an NFL roster.

My only question or quibble with the GH tweet - it implies PJ has developed another QB who had made a 53 man roster. Who an I forgetting?

No, they opened it up with Max after the UNC debacle.

Hmm ... then Iowa just out coached the crap out of us, I guess. Some kind of light switch flipped 2nd half of Mich.

Yeah...Kaleb Johnson destroyed the Gophers on the edges in the 2nd half.

The 'light switch' in the 2nd half of the Michigan game was that the Gophers including Max stopped shooting themselves in the foot so often.

Brosmer's gonna be the QB2
I said this on here a month ago. All my buddies can't believe it when we talk now and they ask how I knew. Simple. Look at his growth the last 18 months from FCS to big boy football in the best conference! He is an absolute football junkie. Can make all the throws, on time, in tight windows. Absolutely carried the Gophers offense, I can't imagine what last year looks like without him. I've heard the veteran offensive lineman were shocked when he showed up in film room with them and knew many of their assignments. He is EXACTLY what KOC looks for. Has all the pieces around him to succeed. I mean, It was crazy he wasn't drafted tbh. What a coup for the Vikings though. They've killed it with UDFA the last few years.

There's about a 10-20% chance Max Brosmer, not JJ McCarthy, is the future long-term QB1 of the Vikings. That chance was about 2-3% at the start of camp.

Barring a sudden major injury it would take a while for this to play out, similar to when Kirk Cousins eventually beat out a much higher selected rookie (RG3) in Washington years ago.

As a few others have stated, I think Wentz will probably be the official QB2 to start off at least. If JJ9 has to miss a series or goes down for the rest of a competitive game, Wentz probably comes in. If it's a noncompetitive game or JJ9 is going to miss a lot of games, then Brosmer may get the chance.

Just really depends on the timing of the season, how the team is doing and the situation itself.

No, they opened it up with Max after the UNC debacle.
Yeah are people forgetting we threw for over 300 yards the very next week? As well as throwing 37 passes against Iowa?

Also for much of that UNC game Max was flat out not very good. Either way it's a moot point if Kesich does his job.

In your words yes.

Not surprisingly, that's a pretty big assumption that I thought Max was playing at an NFL level before he got here, but you're going to be you, so be you.

For the record, I saw Max coming here as a calculated gamble to fill a gaping hole in the roster by poor recruiting at the position and PJ not developing QBs in his time at MN. Morgan regressed from '19 in successive years, AK never developed. I did not see Max then, nor do I now see him as NFL ready talent.

Max was recruited by PJ because of what he accomplished and how he accomplished it at UNH. He was recruited to come here and be the starter. He was not a project. He was someone that had experience and I assume PJ felt could come in and succeed in our system for the one year of elibibily he offered - e.g., not a project to develop.

No doubt he learned from Harbaugh and PJ as his coaches last year, but to claim that PJ developed him into an NFL QB (and note, PJ isn't claiming this - at least from what I've seen - which should tell you something) is incredibly disingenuous to Max and his coaches at UNH.

I have not said, like some on this board, that Max should be QB2 or even screw McCarthy, make Max the starter. I did not see him in August of last year, not do I see him now as NFL-level talent.

I did say after the Vikings signed him, that if he gets a chance, ala Brock Purdy - a similar QB to Max from what I've read about their strengths and weaknesses (and as Mr. Irrelevant, not exactly a rousing endorsement he was an NFL level QB at that time either) - I wouldn't be shocked if he did well.

Max, you may have noticed, is not going to be a starting QB in the NFL. He is a developmental QB. Why? Because he isn't ready to be a starter in the NFL. I think that is pretty clear. I also think his potential is pretty clear. The VIkings are giving him a chance to continue to put his football IQ to the test at the next level.

I do think PJ created the opporutnity for Max to reach a higher level by bringing him into the B1G. Everything I've read about him says he's incredibly smart and confident and that he's succeeding becasue of that.

Even after this past season, Max wasn't a guy who is going to get drafted based on his numbers or his film - which we saw transpire. What PJ did do is create an environment that helped Max get noticed through his building a relationship with O'Connell.

If O'Connell doesn't have a chance to get to know Max, I'm not sure any of this happens. But PJ did that, and Max has made the most of it.

That doesn't translate to PJ developed Max, it translates to PJ's program was a good fit for Max and the Gophers as it created a more succesful season than anticipated for the Gophers and the situation for Max to prove he could play at a higher level and get a shot at the NFL, however improbable.

Hope this helps.

I'm not assuming anything.

You made the assertion that Max was not developed by Fleck. I didn't make that up out of thin air.

Brosmer is very likely to be on an NFL roster Week One. If you believe Brosmer didn't develop at all in his time at Minnesota, then he must have already been NFL-ready when he left New Hampshire.

Yes?

I used many of your own words.
@gopherbadgerman is not worth arguing with. He likes to act like he’s smarter and more impartial than everyone on the board and is too proud to admit when he’s wrong (despite claiming that he admits when he’s wrong). Let him claim that Max came in “good” last year, despite that fact that this is the guy who started a thread mid game last year titled “Brosmer is not a stud” to shit on Max, claim that TD throws by Max were all thanks to the WR, and agree with folks that said Brosmer was a failure.

Just pat him on the head and let him think he was right all along and is smarter than everyone here.

Things are definitely trending up slow but sure for the Gophers and GH.

We have two threads with 17 pages between them on a former Gopher QB making it not only to an active NFL roster but apparently making it to the 53 man cut...and these threads are nowhere near done yet...

Progress.

Let's be honest, neither of them are worth arguing with...

He’s a good QB. I’ll stand by the statement that I don’t think he was a stud QB. But I fully admitted that he is good and ended up better than I thought he would be. I hope Lindsey ends up as good or better than Max was here too.

Don’t know how I act like I’m smarter than anyone though. I’m wrong a lot.
