A qualifying list of potential replacements

Of the top 50 from the link on the first page I like this guy. Being under Cronin for so many years I believe he would bring some toughness to the program

E.g. Bob Hanson to Bill Musselman—it helped to have Jim Brewer & a Wild West mentality—but Williams Arena went from
moribund to 19,000 against Indiana in a matter of months…
Musselman came in talking about aiming high. He was intense and promoted the program. Then he delivered. For years, most of the fans in the lower portion of the arena became addicted to Gopher basketball in the Musselman years. I sure did. Like you, I was watching Gopher basketball in the 1960's... but Musselman got me all in.

I wouldn't be opposed. Hell, maybe Dawn Staley wants a crack at the men's game? Both can definitely coach and we really have nothing to lose that we already haven't lost

How's his health?
I would definitely consider Staley. She can coach, commands respect and would draw a lot of attention to the program. I think both Staley or Reeve would find being pioneers appealing and the NBA isn't ready to take that step yet.

Embedded here is an important point. In all my days, I have never seen a Division 1 head basketball coach be less visible and promote their program less than Johnson. I have never seen anyone as non-existent from the the standpoint of public relations as this guy. He sure could be making things easier on himself by being the face of the program; right now, there IS NO face. He was bitching to his team the other night about there not being leadership on the team. Shit, man, can you model this yourself and strike a leadership pose for the program? Aside from all the other disastrous aspects of this, it's been a public relations disaster. Between him and Coyle, what the fuck. If I were some random non-alumnus citizen of this state, I would wonder if the Gophers even have a basketball program anymore.

Nope.

It will need to be explained to me why this is an attractive job. I'm looking at some of the names that people are throwing out and wondering if you're all on drugs.
At this point it becomes an attractive job for a really good, proven coach for one reason:

You break the bank for a good coach and promise him competitive NIL resources - above the Big Ten average + the coming aspect of revenue sharing. The Big Ten having an advantage over most all other conferences on revenue sharing has to be a factor.

For the U- this seems unlikely.

It's always an attractive job for unproven coaches:

You double down and stupid and take another coach that has never proven it at this level but wants the biggest payday he ever has gotten at a level he has never achieved. Then you fail to support that coach in recruiting and wonder why he failed in year 4 or 5.

This scenario seems fated.

McCollum would be the Fleck type hire. Didn't think we had a shot to get 'em, but we did.

Bring him in!

(Wouldn't mind if he performed a little better than Fleck though)

Yet from Marcus to Reusse the local media reaction is "Poor Ben, can't catch a break" and "No one else will be able to do any better."

Same as, hypothetically, the media holding one political candidate to an impossibly high standard and the other one to no standard. ;) Reusse attacks Fleck unmercifully to the point of actually affecting his potential success by affecting the quality of his public support, yet he expresses sympathy for and bestows victimhood on Johnson. I guess it's not supposed to make any sense. The writers have biases and agendas. Whaddya gonna do.

I don't think Reusse actually dislikes Fleck that much. He does it to troll Gopher fans, though solidarity with "Big Country" Claeys may have been a factor initially.

But even beyond him, the local media either plays the "Poor Ben" card or just ignores Gopher basketball. I haven't heard a single "15-47? WTF are we doing here?" take.

Agreed.

Personally, I find it far more satisfying to stop reading their material rather than to complain about it, and thus, bring more attention to their garbage.

The real problem at the U is having alumni and fans that care more about the quality of the Athletic programs than our Administration. It will take a bold, innovative leader that believes in math to fix that problem.

* 17,000 Tickets sold x $50.00 Average Price x 20 Home games per year

= $17M Gross Ticket sales

Or

* 5,000 Tickets sold x $50.00 Average Price x 20 Home games per year

= $5M Gross Ticket sales

We middle-age folk like ourselves some snacks and beverages, too.

The Barn is 14,600 and the days of selling it out regularly are probably gone for good. So the U is not leaving $12 million on the table. But the difference between 5K and 9K still means they are leaving $4 million/year on the table. Add half of that to what you pay Ben and you're paying a $4 million + which is a top 15 salary.

Which is what makes the "woe is us, who would want this job, we wouldn't even get Tauer" talk so ridiculous. The U can easily afford $4 million + and it's in the B1G. A lot of folks would take the job. We just have to hire the right one.

Sundance Wicks from Wyoming is name that will be brought up nationally for open jobs. He is good!

Now, unlike Tauer, Staley ain't coming to Minnesota.

She already makes half again as much as Johnson, and if she wanted to coach men's hoops she'd have much better opportunities.

I don’t see the appeal. Short career as hc; no tourney appearances or conference championship games. I like the cignetti model—winning at smaller levels for period of time. Wicks’ time seems rather mid.

Almost anyone over Dawn Staley. Let's top off 30 years of failure by experimenting with bringing in a woman's coach, something never done at this level, to coach 20 year old men. Joan Gabel approves of the Staley hire.
LOL.

The MAGAt knuckle dragger weighs in.

Staley woukd be a home run, but The Gophers couldn't get Staley to say yes.

Why the MAGA slam. Already named first woman chief of staff in history. Everything got to go to politics and put downs ?

Since North Carolina hired Bill Belicik in football, any chance Phil Jackson wants to try college basketball? OR does Coach K miss coaching?
