A challenge to the Kill haters

Kill's resume with smaller schools is just as impressive as Jim Wacker's was.

Both moved their way up with successes at non-D1 schools and then had 1-2 decent years at a fledgling D1 school before making the big leap to Minnesota.

Therein lies the problem.

We are an F'ing Big Ten football team. The last MAC "star" Brady Hoke got a promotion to San Diego State. Jerry Kill has been a winner for all of 3 seasons in the MAC conference. Thanks to the work done by another poster I can tell you he has 2 (2!) wins in three years against teams that finished the year with a winning record...Jeff Horton has 1 (and a win over 6-6 Illinios) in 1/2 a year. My biggest concern with Kill is that he has no experience recruiting at this level, how are we going to get the talent? Other have commented on his appearance and I do think it is relevant to a point. That face of the program both for public speaking and for entering the homes of recruits has to be a concern on some level. I laughed when MV made fun of the Childress to Miami rumors and made a Child Molester/recruiting visit joke....it's not so funny now.

Kansas - Big 12

Coach Kill has already reached masonball standards as he is 2-3 against BT teams. He probably has exceeded them as he lost to MN, Wisky and Illini by an average of 4 ppg.

Coach Kill won 2/3 of his MAC games (18-6) with the lowest ranked MAC school recruits for 3 consecutive seasons. Maybe the guy really can develop players.

I say lets give the man a chance.

no-one hates Kill. Just ANti-Maturi. Lets support Jerry Kill but move to remove Maturi.

You lost all credence with this post after this comment, which forced me to stopped reading immediately. Go do some research on Hortons record in Division 1 football. Dude sucks

Kill's resume is quite different from Wacker's.

Wacker's first job as a D-I head coach was at TCU where he had a 40-58-2 record. He had previously coached at the D-III level with Texas Lutheran and at D-II with Southwest Texas State (which now goes by Texas State and is now D-I but was then D-II).

Kill has 10 years of experience coaching at D-I, seven of those with I-AA Southern Illinois, three of those with I-A Northern Illinois. Unlike Wacker, Kill has a winning D-I record.

Maturi is going away, the idea was to keep Maturi until the next President could appoint his own choice as AD. Since we already have a President hired, although he won't start until July, why not press forward with the search process for the next AD now? Maturi could then retire with Bruininks, and we can give him a gold watch and a plaque, and move on.

Look at the numbers...

Not what everyone hoped for politically or PR-wise, but a solid hire. He has a very loyal staff and he is loyal to them.

Statistically, his offense was 21st in yardage (446 ypg, 7th in rushing 265 ypg); 13th in points (38 ppg) in NCAA.

Defense was 26th in yardage allowed (332 ypg – balanced rushing 27th and passing 24th); 16th in points (19 ppg) in NCAA.

I like that he believes in running the ball, and I think in that manner he can make MarQueis a superstar at QB. Also, the fact that his defense is balanced is a good sign.

Personality, not Brewster, not Mason. Seems pretty even-keeled. He believes in tough teams that work hard, and has one of the top graduation rates in the country. Time will tell. I hope he can recruit, too.

Took miserable teams and turned them into winners and kept them there. He just wins…

Not my number 1 choice, but in the top 10.

I'll support JK as the new Head Coach!!

But, JerryKillFan, or whoever...can you please help me feel better about him never winning a Bowl Game\Big Playoff game? (that is if Wikipedia is accurate)

someone on the board who knows him said he is a cross between Wade Phillips and rex Ryan.......a very likable guy

There is a reason all newscasters have to adopt a Minnesota (Mid-Western) accent.

Seriously? Movies like Fargo make fun of Minnesota accents. Newscasters have a non-regional dialect. If anything, it is like Ohio or Buffalo, NY.

Well, let's look at things here. NI isn't exactly and easy place to get recruits. Even so, he broke the top 25 this year.

2008- Lost 31-27 to the Gophers, Lost 13-9 to Tennessee
2009- Lost 28-20 to WI, Beat Purdue 28-21
2010- Beat the Gophers 34-23, Lost to Ill 28-22

The type of program NI is, they shouldn't even be competitive with these teams, much less have made the top 25.

I don't know how far Kill will take the Gophers but I think he'll be better than Mason and Brewster.

Kill had two big-time teams at Southern Illinois. One, led by Brandon Jacobs, entered the FCS playoffs as the No. 1 seed and lost at home in the opening round to Eastern Washington.

The second was pretty good, too. SIU won at Indiana during the regular season and advanced to the FCS semifinals where it lost to eventual national champ Delaware (and Joe Flacco). No crime there.

His first two NIU teams were pretty ordinary (Novak didn't exactly leave a juggernaut) and getting them to bowl games was quite an accomplishment.

Please don't take this the wrong way but I would suggest waiting until Kill gets Minnesota into a bowl game before worrying about if he can win them or not. :) My point is he has never been hired to produce immediate results.

He's like Harvey Keitel in "Pulp Fiction" ... if he gets the call, there's a clean-up needed.

Bumping those goal posts back already? That seems premature.

I've never said he's going to be a quick-fix savior.

Look at his coaching career and his third year at every school he's been is the big one.

JKF - Thanks for the info. Still a little concerned. But, if he can come in like "The Wolf" I'm in!

Okay, who is the allegorical guy in the house screaming at the allegorical doofus with greasy hair about a mythical sign in his front lawn? :D

If history is the guide, this is what will happen.

Kill will fill whatever holes you guys have with JUCOs then redshirt his entire first freshman class. He'll do the same in year two. By the time you get to year three there will be a big foundation of underclassmen in place and that's when the fun (winning) begins.

He's followed that formula everywhere he's been.

" Seriously" there is probably one movie made by a Minnesota producer that makes fun of an exagerated accent. How many thousand movies make fun of hick southern accents? See deliverance? Insert banjo music.

Give me a break. Kill rode Novak's coattails, end of story. Harnish, Spann, Coffman, and all the other Seniors are all Novak recruits. The 2007 NIU squad was plauged with numerous injuries which lead to the 2-10 record. 5 of those losses had a margin of 7 points or fewer.

Kill is 2-12 against teams with a winning record after 3 seasons at NIU. I don't care if "he got us to bowl games," how about winning them? He went 0-3 in the post-season, most recently blowing our chance to win the conference championship for the first time in 27 years by handicapping our team with some of the worst play-calling and decision making of the season.

Most of NIU's players found out he was leaving from media/friends/family. He lays an egg, then peels out of DeKalb and heads elsewhere. Bottom line is, I'm glad Minnesota is taking him off our hands. Good riddance.

So, I'm guessing Jerry Kill isn't on your Christmas card list?:)

I'd think that he would be now because he has to spend 46¢ on a stamp to mail it rather than just slide it under his door and run.

How the hell is that his fault? Did he or did he not address the team face to face to tell them he was leaving? It's not his fault the media got a hold of it before he had a chance to tell the team.

As much as I'd like to view this as simple sour grapes, you pretty succinctly sum up my reservations.

Further, I have to admit having watched the game Friday, color me unimpressed. And his record against winners leaves me worried as well. And then there is the recruiting...

Well at least the lack of sizzle will help me and the gang jockey for better seats. For a while I was worried we'd hire Leach and there would be some buzz around the program.

Which is exactly what Brewster should have done, but was too frickin' impatient to do. Mason left little depth in the cupboard (we've been through this a million times and it always elicits debate) and Brewster should have gone with more (or at least better) JUCOs out of the gate.

Huskie, you are right . . .

Coach Novak really made the reputation of the program and made it the place to go for kids in Northern, Illinois.

I did take a close look at his resume. In three years at NIU, he was 2-12 against teams with a winning record. He beat Temple and Toledo this year.

If you hire a third tier guy, don't you think we should get someone that has dominated at that level? 6-7, 7-6, and 10-3 in the MAC isn't all that impressive when you look at the teams they beat to get those other 21 wins.

Your analysis is misleading. Many Mac teams have poor overall records because they get pasted in the non-conference by schools from better conferences. Thus, the better Mac teams are often beating other Mac teams that are 2-4 or 1-5 early in the season.

As for NIU's losses to teams with winning records, it helps to know what schools those were. How many were Big Ten schools, etc?

In short, if you are playing a MAC schedule, you are fodder for schools from Power Conferences, and this skews your overall record as well as your record against schools with winning records... there simply aren't as many winning records to potentially beat in the conference portion of the schedule.
