2nd-year coaches update (W-L records)

Still think Edsall is extremely overrated.

I just hate running the ball. Running the ball is the equivalent of Wisconsin basketball to me.

That said, any offense can be successful with an awesome O-Line. Our backs had no where to run today.

It does not help your o-line or running backs when you run a very predictable offense. there were no surprises or wrinkles in our offense today. it was completely vanilla. A high school coach could prepare a defense against our offense. Fire Limegrover!!!

I never ever thought I'd type this, but based on his hiring to and (so far) success with the Chicago Bears ... Marc Trestman should have been taken much more seriously as a candidate. I know I brushed him off almost immediately, but been a pleasant surprise seeing him in Chicago. Hoping to see him continue to be successful.

Updated!

Here are the team records the year previous to their arrival, their first, second, and to-date through their third years.

Only two coaches - Kill and Franklin - are guaranteed to have a better record in year three than their team did the year before their arrival.

Six coaches - Shaw, Holgorson, Pasqualoni, Embree, Muschamp, Edsall - cannot surpass their team's record from 2010 (year prior to their arrival) in 2013 (two of them because they were already canned).

This is a pretty funny thread to read 5 weeks on.

Updating for this year. Two coaches - Paul Pasqualoni, Jon Embree - have been fired from the schools that hired them in 2011, while one - James Franklin - has left for greener pastures in Happy Valley.

With that said, here are the list of major coaches hired in 2011, the records before they came, and their current records:

Brady Hoke, Michigan
2010: 7-6
2011: 11-2
2012: 8-5
2013: 7-6
2014: 1-0

David Shaw, Stanford
2010: 12-1
2011: 11-2
2012: 12-2
2013: 11-3
2014: 1-0

Dana Holgorson, West Virginia
2010: 9-4
2011: 10-3
2012: 7-6
2013: 4-8
2014: 0-1

Al Golden, Miami
2010: 7-6
2011: 6-6
2012: 7-5
2013: 9-4
2014: 0-1

Will Muschamp, Florida
2010: 8-5
2011: 7-6
2012: 11-2
2013: 4-8
2014: 0-0

Kevin Wilson, Indiana
2010: 5-7
2011: 1-11
2012: 4-8
2013: 5-7
2014: 1-0

Jerry Kill, Minnesota
2010: 3-9
2011: 3-9
2012: 6-7
2013: 8-5
2014: 1-0

Randy Edsall, Maryland
2010: 9-4
2011: 2-10
2012: 4-8
2013: 7-6
2014: 1-0

My takeaways: out of this group of coaches, given where the programs were when they entered, few coaches have showed sustained improvement from what they inherited. In fact, only Golden and Kill had a better season in year 3 than their program had the year before their arrival. Some (Hoke, Wilson) have plateaued, some (Muschamp, Holgorson) have seemingly tanked, and others (looking at you, Edsall) completely nuked the program before showing some improvements.
