Played in 8/14 games as a freshman for Miami before transfering, not a lot of minutes but hardly shocking. He was touted out of high school, he's absolutely worth a flier.

He was a 3 star per 247's own ranking which is what they use for the "as a prospect" section once someone enters the portal. The composite takes into account all the major recruiting rankers so Rivals, On3, etc, which makes it the standard. In that he was a 4 star as shown in the picture attached. You have to switch back to his high school page to see it.

Pretty sure if you don't enter by April 22nd you can still transfer but you won't officially be in the transfer portal which makes it known to teams that you are open to being recruited.

It seemed to work out ok for Danny Wolf, a transfer from Yale to Michigan.

Considering he's a junior, and an athlete who stay mostly year round taking classes, I'd bet good money he's already got a degree and is doing this because of that.

Why is it hardly shocking? Miami was a terrible, terrible team - 2nd worst of all P5 - and he couldn't crack *that* rotation. For a supposedly "touted" player, that's a big ol' red flag - he wasn't good enough for *that* team. Once MN gets their starters signed and he hasn't found a spot yet by that time, then *maybe* take a flier. Not absolutely.

Severe case of one of us disease clouds clear-eyed judgement.

This year's portal just reminds me of how inept our in-state recruiting has been recently. We Gopherholers are excited about the luring of Omot, the possibility of getting Johnson-Arigu, the dream of acquiring Holloman and Heide, and the 'chance' that Freitag or Kapke might join the team. ALL of them were available when they played HS hoops in Minnesota. Personally, I don't want Freitag (not a good cultural or position fit) or Kapke (not impressed), and think that Holloman will be an unfulfilled dream but...let's look at the list of players from Minnesota who are relevant and are (if in the portal) or would have been (if not in the portal) available in the last 5 years...Tschetter (2021), McAndrew (2024), Chatman (2023), Winter (2023), Watson (2022), Robison (2024), Omot (2024), Johnson-Arigu (2024), Jefferson (2022), King (2022), Chavis (2024), Mekonnen (2024), Aligbe (2022)...and that doesn't even count Dainja and Walton who may be out of eligibility (who knows these days) but could have helped the past 3-5 years. Throw in Ahneman and Thompson (2025) and it is clear we could have been a great team!

Instate recruiting has been bad ever since Minnesota started producing multiple high major players. Not a secret. Will be even harder now that there will be fewer opportunities for younger players.

"you _must_ complete the Notification of Transfer process and have your name added to the NCAA Transfer Portal by your school's Compliance Officer." to transfer schools

but as you typed, might not be enforced. Does make me wonder if its not mandatory why enter the portal with a "do not contact"

Texas is a pig when it comes to $$ available for NIL. Their Texas 1 Fund just surpassed $1B. Even if they treat it like an endowment and use 5% earnings each year, that is $50M to deal with. Granted, FB gets most of it, but the scraps for other sports are more than most schools.
