2024 MN High School Football thread

Can officially say the higher seeds do not need to worry about Lakeville South or Rosemount....holy crap that was tough to watch and neither team looked good.

Tonight looks like another indication that there is not a clear cut favorite in 6A this year. Lakeville North will probably hang onto the #1 spot because they keep on winning close games but don't see them doing well when they actually have to start playing good teams again.

Section 2 has 2 decent teams in North and Eagan. Farmington, South, Mayo, Rosemount, Eastview and Burnsville are all very week this year. Champ is almost certainly not coming from this group of teams.

Stillwater goes down to WBL
Hopkins loses to Roseville
STMA loses to Osseo
Anoka 14-0 over Centennial should give them 2 seed behind MG.

The goal will be to avoid Edina and EP in the second round for top seeds.

I never realized how close in distance these two high schools are to each other. Were not in the same conference for a long time?
EP was in the lake
Minnetonka was in classic lake

At one point lake red and lake blue or something.

It’s musical chairs

Hopkins games must be quite something to watch - the average combined scoring output this year is just over 74 points.

Two Rivers continues to blow out the city schools on their schedule and the seemingly inevitable section final with St Thomas should be an interesting game.

If EP's QB can improve his passing watch out for EP. They should win against Rochester Mayo and Woodbury before the playoffs. The EP run game is coming back. The team I would watch out for in 6A, beyond Maple Grove, is Shakopee. Their offense creates confusion, and if their RB's stay healthy they will be a threat to any team they play.

I think they get the two and Hastings get the 3

But I would have any game between them and valley or Jefferson as a pick em

Hard to find common opponents for comparison given Two Rivers’ JV schedule, but they did easily beat Hastings, which beat Jefferson by 15.

Yup. But I would still pick either one of them over two rivers

That doesn’t mean they’d for sure win

Interesting note on Eden Prairie....for as good as they have been their last championship game appearance was back in 2018 and their last win was 2017.

To be fair, they would have had a strong chance to win it in 2020; Covid shut them down.

You are correct though; there have not been many classes that have gone their 4 years without a championship. And the demographics have change drastically. Football may be ok, but hockey has been hit hard. They are easily in a class below Edina & Minnetonka when it comes to hockey at the youth level.

When they were at peak powerhouse level in almost everything, there was a lot of criticism for not building a second high school, claiming it was only because they wanted to be good at sports (as if that's why schools are built). What they didn't want, was to have to close a second high school when demographics changed and the district aged like Hopkins, Edina, White Bear, Roseville, Bloomington etc. all did, and I think we're starting to see it now.

I'd be very curious to see how many kids open enroll from EP into Minnetonka. I've known a few parents who sent their kids to Tonka from EP, but not near as many as from Hopkins.

(but I still think Wayzata should have built a second high school - it's projected to keep growing a LOT).

A good number do for sure, absolutely.

It's an interesting community.....lots of haves & have nots in terms of personal wealth. I'm guessing all districts have some, but it really seems to be quite a gap, at least from what I see.

Another sport but EP girls tennis advanced to state over Minnetonka today. Still two classes and here was the final four of the section

Minnetonka
Eden Prairie
Prior Lake
St Peter

One is not like the others.

Who voted for 3-3 Stillwater who just lost to 0-5 (now 1-5 white bear lake)?

Who voted for 3-3 STMA who just lost to 1-4 (now 2-4 osseo).

I’m not sure who 7+ in the poll should be, but those two ain’t it.

I’d probably go:
1) maple grove 6-0
2) lakeville north 6-0
3) Minnetonka 5-1
4) shakopee 5-1
5) Edina 4-2
6) Eagan 4-2
7) anoka 4-2
8) Blaine 4-2
9) Eden prairie (top 6 have combined for 1 loss to teams not in top 6 and it was last week to Eden prairie) 3-3
10) lakeville south (beat farmington) 3-3

11) Farmington (beat Moundsview) 3-3
12) Moundsview (beat forest lake) 4-2
13) forest lake (2 losses) 4-2

14) centennial 3-3, no quality wins
15) STMA 3-3, no quality wins with a bad loss
16) Stillwater, 3-3 with a bad loss but best Moundview
17) east ridge, 3-3 lost to Stillwater

After 17, everyone else is 2-4 or worse OR a relief team

Demographics are passing them by.
Enrollment and Low-income levels by schools from the Metro-West district (via greatschools.org):

Eden Prairie: 2,833 Students/ 31% low income

Edina: 2,720 Students/ 20% low income

Minnetonka: 3,508 Students/ 11% low income

Prior Lake: 2,857 Students/ 18% low income

Shakopee: 2,770 Students/ 38% low-income

Wayzata: 3,523 Students/ 14% low income

Minnetonka and Wayzata definitely seem to have a competitive advantage when it comes to the factors of enrollment and income.

Can’t disagree with any of these. Big game this week between Eagan and Forest Lake.

Can’t disagree with any of these. Big game this week between Eagan and Forest Lake.
Starting to be more crossover again this week.
Being able to compare teams between the 4 sections becomes a bit easier.
Barring upsets, seeding pretty close to done:

South:
1) north
2) eagan
3) south
4) farmington - the best 4? Or EP
5) mayo
6) rosemount - the best 6…may finish 1-7 but they have a top 10 defense in the state and will be a tough out)
7) Eastview
8) Burnsville

West:
1) Tonka
2) shakopee - the best 2
3) Edina - the best 3
4) Eden Prairie - the best 4? (or farmington)
5) prior lake - the best 5 (I think, don’t love any of the 5s)
6) wayzata
7) Buffalo - the best 7? (Or osseo)
8) Hopkins - the best 8

North:
1) maple grove - the best 1
2) anoka
3) Blaine
4) centennial
5) STMA
6) Champlin park
7) osseo - the best 7? (Or Buffalo)
8) coon rapids

East:
1) Moundsview
2) forest lake
3) Stillwater
4) east ridge
5) woodbury
6) white bear lake
7) Roseville
8) park

Game of the week is white bear lake vs Roseville

No relief team has beaten a non relief team through 1.75 seasons.
Before last week I thought Roseville had a chance.
With white bear beating Stillwater last week, probably have to pick white bear lake.

Week 8 Buffalo plays prior lake. The best of the relief Vs a 5 seed team. I would pick prior lake.

Those are the two best shots
