in the most recent "Gopher Gridiron Radio" episode, the hosts talked to a guy who is the "Bowl game expert" for Gopher Illustrated. gets into detail on how teams are selected for bowl games, including many of the factors that impact the selection process.

as of now, he says the Gophers are most likely to wind up in the Duke's Mayo Bowl. if the Gophs upset Penn State, they have a shot at Music City, but otherwise he predicts Duke's Mayo.

he also says there is virtually no chance that the Gophers go back to Detroit again.

Any speculation on opponents? I'm not as tuned into this stuff as I once was.

nope. I don't subscribe to Gopher Illustrated, so I don't read this guy's stuff. If it is the Duke's Mayo Bowl, I believe that matches an ACC team against a B1G team or SEC team, with the B1G and the SEC playing in alternating years - this year being a B1G year. so, if that's the bowl, an ACC opponent. just don't ask me to name who's in the ACC anymore........

The only thing that is 99% certain is no Detroit because of last year

But I think 0-2 would put the Arizona and New York City repeat bowls in play
 

This week looks like most projections will be NY or Charlotte. I’m hoping a win vs WI gets the team slotted for Nashville.
 

I saw a prediction for the First Responders Bowl ...but that doesn't make sense I don't think.

I don’t know anything but am reading it may be Charlotte either way, but with a loss New York or Phoenix is most likely

If Wisconsin gets bowl eligible there are 7 bowl games + 4 playoff spots for 11 teams. Only way we go to a non affiliated bowl would be if Wisconsin and Michigan state both win.
Then there are too many teams for the number of bowls. All will be filled +1

Also possible a big ten team gets left out in suppose if bowls are under contracts all fulfilled And the big ten doesn’t have enough contracts for their teams.

It’s really odd to think about

Action network doesn’t make any sense. Michigan state is going to beat Rutgers but Rutgers is going to get Phoenix and MSU stays in Michigan? Phoenix would prefer MsU I would think and get the choice earlier.

But if MsU loses to Rutgers they aren’t eligible.

I'd agree. Beat Wisconsin and I would bet on Nashville, which would be pretty sweet.

Lose and beggars cant be choosers.
 

Worth nothing, but my educated guesses:
  • Beat Wisconsin: Charlotte (outside possibility of Nashville, but I think Nebraska will get that)
  • Lose to Wisconsin: Phoenix

This is my take

Biggest wildcard is if northwestern beats Illinois, Iowa beats Nebraska, Michigan state beats Rutgers, and Minnesota beats Wisconsin.

Possible citrus wants Iowa again in that case even though it’s back to back. Which would open up Reliaquest Minnesota vs illinois

Illinois one game better. Minnesota won head to head. Same thing could happen if citrus doesn’t want citrus for citrus.

I’d bet on Illinois but wouldn’t rule it out. It’s a shame we didn’t win one of the 3 close ones (North Carolina, Rutgers, Michigan).

247 Projects that Iowa is the team that gets stiffed by Michigan winning yesterday....by going to the First Responder Bowl rather than the Pinstripe? Unfortunately, they have us playing Syracuse again. Would much rather flip with Nebraska and play LSU. Best case would be to get the Reliaquest and play Texas A&M.

I read this and it doesn’t make sense. The big ten has no tie in with first responder bowl and already can’t fill in all their contracts.

I do think that Iowa gets jumped by Michigan though.


My official projections:
Citrus - Illinois vs SEC
Reliaquest - Michigan vs SEC
Music city - Iowa vs SEC
Mayo - MN vs ACC
Pinstripe - Nebraska vs ACC
Rate - Rutgers vs big 12

Nebraskans have such pent-up demand for any bowl game that I would half expect them to jump right into the CFP for the ticket and travel package sales

Even the Quick Lane Bowl might sell out with them
 

I don't want to touch 'Cuse for 2 reasons :

1) been there done that... 2 times

2) their QB is a stud. I mean NFL stud.

Teams in order that I would love to go against ;

1) A&M
2) LSU
3) Florida
4) Clemson
5) Pitt

Teams I want nothing to do with for various reasons :

1) Cuse
2) South Carolina
3) Georgia Tech
4) WVU
5) Duke

..

I dont see how they make us play syracuse again after playing them what...6 or 7 times in 15 yrs. Would be silly

The rumor is the big ten feels it owes pinstripe bowl a major brand. Penn state in like 2014. Wisconsin a couple of times

Pinstripe wanted Michigan. Now they want Nebraska since Michigan is going to Florida
 

CFN: Music City vs. Texas AM (yes, please). They have Mich in Mayo tho which I don’t see
Sporting News: Music City vs. LSU (double yes, please). They have Mich in Vegas though which is actually impossible AFAIK.

I wondered about how those bowls with PAC 12 tie-ins would be handled. There's about 6 of them and USC and Wash only 2 of the old conference to qualify. Could they poach a current BIG team if not enough PAC teams to fill?

I think USC and Washington would be first gets for unused big ten bowls if the pac 12 had too many bowl teams for their spots

Maybe. I would think Big 10 would rather send them to Alamo or Vegas instead of Detroit for bigger audience and less travel.
Be fun to see how it shakes out. Washington State is in that equation too for those bowls.

Either of these would be close to best case scenarios. Texas A&M in the Music City Bowl is easily my favorite outcome.

I was wondering this too. Maybe a PAC-12 bowls gets shuffled around due to realignment causing issues with eligibility and records. Here's how I'm seeing it currently:

Oregon - Playoffs
Arizona State - Big 12 Championship would put them in the playoffs

ASU is the hinge point here. They win and get into the playoffs (which the Sporting News projection shows)....it leaves five teams for six games (Alamo, Las Vegas, Holiday, Sun Bowl, LA Bowl, Independence Bowl). Holiday and Sun Bowls commonly have a ranked team. They aren't getting one from the remaining choices unless ASU falls.

Colorado (9-3, 7-2) - Alamo Bowl
Washington State (8-4, 0-1)
Washington (6-6, 4-5)
USC (6-6, 4-5)
CAL (6-6, 2-6)

Colorado goes to the Alamo Bowl in this situation. After that....it's kind of a crapshoot. Washington, USC, and CAL are all 6-6 with losing conference records. Washington State is 8-4.....but they played a Mountain West schedule....losing their last three games against teams not eligible for bowls.

Maybe it's possible that since the Las Vegas Bowl has Big Ten tie-ins as well......that one gets shifted back to the Big Ten for the year since we'll be able to place a team with a winning record there?

Well they’ll go to pac 12 bowls first, and there are enough.

But just like when gophers qualified at 5-7 but didn’t have a spot they went to unused big ten spot first (that would’ve gone to a non big ten team first if there were enough 6-6 teams)
