2024 Bowl Projections Tracker

FWIW - Brett McMurphy and the Action Network put out their new Bowl forecast today.

they had the Gophers in the Detroit Bowl facing Northern Illinois.

and for some reason, the first thing that came to my mind was the start of a classic song by The Pogues:

It was Christmas Eve babe
In the drunk tank

(Yes, I know the Detroit Bowl is the day after Christmas, not Christmas Eve...)

on the bright side, they had the Gophers as a 16.5-point favorite in the game.

Can a team play in the same bowl two years in a row?

with the start of the 12-team playoff, and with conference realignment mucking up a lot of the traditional bowl-game tie-ins, I'm not sure there are any rules right now.

I know that the 4 new B1G teams that came from the PAC can still play in Bowls that were tied to the PAC under the old agreements. But Oregon will be in the Playoffs, and UCLA probably will not qualify, so that just impacts USC and Washington (assuming they get to 6 wins).

bottom line for the Gophers - win at least 7 games and hopefully avoid Detroit.

Please no to the Pin Stripe as we were just there two years ago and the baseball field grass is horrible to play on. Would take Duke Mayo as we haven't been there...still holding out we get to 7 wins and maybe Music City Bowl!

Yeah I'm hoping no baseball field stadiums. Both times now the field conditions were horrible. Guaranteed Rate was probably worse because of the fact that they had a roof and decided to keep it open for parachuters coming in.

Like dude, if it's pouring rain and you have a stadium with a retractable roof. Maybe close it and cancel the parachuting event to preserve what everyone came to see, which is the football game, not to mention prevent potential injuries.

Yeah I was wondering the rules as well. I’d have to assume (yeah, yeah) the B1G would try to honor the spirit of their agreement with the bowls and avoid repeat appearances to the greatest extent possible. There will be so many B1G teams with 6 - 7 wins that I’d be SHOCKED if Minnesota plays in Detroit or NYC again. I’d give Mayo and Nashville far higher odds.

Dukes mayo vs Louisville who I have never seen us play, in a bowl we haven’t been to, against Jeff Brohm aka some of this boards secret crush.

I had a blast at the Pinstripe Bowl. It wasn't THAT cold. I also love NYC and am there a few times a year anyway.
I honestly think that the big ten should put in the pinstripe contract they won’t take a team that played @ Rutgers

If I’m flying out for that game I am not flying out again 6 weeks later

I'll see ya there! Figured with UCLA and Michigan as better options, there wouldn't be many of us making the trip to Rutgers 😂😂

It's unfortunate the Big Ten doesn't have the Alamo Bowl tie-in like it did in the 90s and 2000s. I would have liked to have seen the Gophers play in that one some time.

Agreed. That one always seemed to be the "better bowl" that the Gophers were being cheated out of because of the perception the fan base didn't travel as well, during the Mason years. Instead, it was the Music City or Insight bowls for us.

GameAbove Sports Bowl may be the worst bowl name ever.

It's like those arrogant a-holes who want to appear to be above sports that they refer to any sport as "playing sport ball".

Or the Sun Bowl. I've always wanted to see a game in that stadium.

I'd be happy with a season beating USC, UCLA, and Oklahoma. 5 years from now nobody will remember they weren't at the top of their game.

If any are able to climb back to their prior prominence in their new conferences (see Nebraska for reference).

I think only USC is capable of climbing back to prominence. Oklahoma will go the way of Nebraska, middle tier / bottom tier but they will always live in past for years to come and get hyped every new year as being back

Bob Stoops' time there was really impressive. Some probably thought he fell short in some ways but as you mentioned, there can always be a turn toward a Nebraska situation.

I have been thinking the same thing. Oklahoma will become the SEC's Nebraska. When you try to create super conferences - somehow everyone thinks they will be winning it with the same frequency they have in the past. But, 5 schools can't win the same conference in a year. There will be losers in 50% of the games played.

I guess the one thing that could change my opinion a bit is with all the NIL and transfer possibilities - if there really is a growing parity situation, more teams will get their turns. But that is little consolation to teams like Nebraska and Oklahoma, teams that were at one point in a position to not share the success.
