2024-25 Gopher Hockey Season

I can live with the no-calls when the Gophers are cycling in the offensive zone but the no-call on the Chesley mugging is just handing the game to Notre Dame—disgraceful.

I was in Mariucci tonight for the game. I am not usually one to blame the refs. But this one was mostly on them. It got so bad at the end that you almost had to laugh. Horrible, horrible, horrible.

The refs should be absolutely ashamed of themselves. They gifted the game to ND. I hate that about hockey. Call the damn penalties regardless of the time.

Unfortunately BC has started their expected domination.

I don’t know if I’d call being a fraction of a point ahead of Sparty in the pairwise domination but they are #1.

To Bonins earlier point about goaltending, power plays and face offs being inconsistent tonight was a good example.

We lost every face off in overtime. We lost a large majority of the face offs on the power plays tonight. Souliere has been much more consistent so on the season it’s more that Airey let’s in soft goals (see both last night). Power play was brutal tonight. One of those three are better we win the game despite it being the worst officiated game I have seen in person.

How does this work so often haha
Do you always talk to yourself all night long. That’s like the last 5 posts of you having a conversation with yourself. No wonder anyone doesn’t take you seriously.

I don't like blaming refs for losses, and I'm not here, because the team made plenty of mistakes, but I think i counted 6 obvious Notre Dame penalties that weren't called in late 3rd/OT. Whether we "blame" them or not, they were awful.

Because he was banned on GPL where he had more of an audience and now he is stuck on here with not much interaction. He does bring his joyousness to the GPL podcast chat, but again, his posts mostly go ignored. If I were this miserable about a team I supposedly love, I would find another hobby.

Why do you fear BC so much? Because they have some elite forwards? Have you even noticed that we’re the highest scoring team in the nation?

I mean they’re probably the team with the most raw high end talent coupled with a top 3 goalie.

BC MN MSU seem like the best 3 teams this year. Denver also right there but have been a little up and down, though they did that last year too. Handful of other teams (WMU, Maine, BU) seem in that next crop. Don’t think the talent difference at the top is as high as Bonin is making it out to be from BC to the rest. I think MN or MSU vs BC with both teams playing their A game would be a 50/50 game. BC has the “best” line of the 3 and better goalie but MN is deeper at forward and on D. BC has the best top line vs MSU but I like MSUs forward depth there and the goalie is a coin flip at best if not in MSUs favor.

BC is a team to be feared only in the sense of they’re also very good, but they’re not head and shoulders better than everyone this year

They are the only team I think the Gophers would have a <= 40% chance against in a one game scenario. MSU with Augustine might be like 55/45 which is more or less a toss up.

So it's more a factor of no one else worries me in a one game scenario against this Gopher team.

Assuming they figure out the goalie, PK and faceoffs situations a bit.

I think Thomas coming back is going to help quite a bit on the PK. The faceoffs need to get figured out as chasing kills you, especially in the postseason against teams who can control the puck

Yeah, I went to that one last night, and the no calls were fascinating in the 3rd.
Apparently a cross check to the head is not a big deal.

#4 Gophers head to #2 MSU in the most important series of the year. Both teams seem full strength but Red Savage could be out. Winner Friday is first team to 20 wins (MSU has played 2 fewer games).

Let's see which Gopher team shows up.

Friday game streaming only.

This rarely gets shared now that collegehockeystats died but here is the top 10 (12) in conference only points. Three local transfers having massive impacts at MSU and ND.

Just speaks to MN scoring depth as well as goals from the D core.

11 so far in B10 play and 22 overall.

Rest of league in B10 play and overall
MSU: 8, 10
OSU: 5, 9
MI: 4, 9
WI: 1, 4
ND: 9, 13
PSU: 1, 5

Motzko's inability to recruit and manage goalies will be a major reason if he's ever let go. If he sticks with Airey too long and he blows a game in the tourney that's strike 2 for the coach IMO.

Im sorry but I have no faith in Airey. Souliere is 5 years older, has NCAA tournament experience, and has clearly been the better goalie this season. It’s late January and a pretty big series. IMO Souliere has won the job by now and we should go with him moving forward. I’m disappointed Motzko hasn’t made the decision yet.

Find it effing ridiculous that this hockey game is not on a broadcast channel or at least the big20 network.
Get used to it. Will only get worse going forward. I don’t care that it’s on Big10+ but there needs to be broadcasting standards. The gophers do a wonderful job and no other hockey team in the big ten cares.
