2023 College Basketball Transfer Portal Watch Thread

Probably not a commitable offer.

I was looking at him a couple of days ago when he dropped into the portal.

His numbers are pretty good although the competition was lower. His turnovers are high but so are his assists. He's little (5'10"). Pretty good shooter (.575 True Shooting Percentage. Great free throw shooter (.841 in D1) and got to the line at a fair rate last season. 18.6 player efficiency rating this past season (same as Payne's this season). He'd only be a one year player as he's played 4 seasons already (2 in junior college).

I would guess we actually have a legit offer out to Dezi Jones as Ryan James re-tweeted the top 4. This program is just in incredibly sad shape, first we have people pining for Eli King who can't get off the bench at Iowa State (a program we had never lost an in state kid to before Ben Johnson and we *allegedly* didn't want King...wonder if that's changed) and now we're in a final 4 for a kid with 3 teams from one bid leagues. Recruiting was supposed to be the slam dunk portion of Ben Johnson's resume and it has been almost as bad as the game day coaching. The one thing that stands out on Jones highlights is that he's not explosive. You'd expect a 5'10 167lb guy to be blowing past guys and he's barely turning the corner against MAAC competition. Seems like a good shooter, but getting the shot off against high major defenders will be tougher. Hopefully this is the clear third of three guard additions this Spring.

Obviously he’s recruiting Dezi to attract other, high end talent. And to lead us to the elite 8

If he's playing more than Samuals did, we're screwed. Just utter incompetence in the portal by Johnson.
Nah. It’s not saying much but this kid would mop the floor with Samuals.

If he brings Dezi in for one year and has 2 more guard transfers come in that are underclassmen I’d consider it a win.

We’re not gonna land 4 and 5 star transfers. Shoot Garcia wouldn’t be here if his family wasn’t.

He'd probably be all right for a second point. I think I'd prefer the son of the women's basketball coach though.

We might be able to land 4 star transfers but they'd likely be ones who haven't played like four star players. There are more than a few of those too.

Filling out the roster with guys like this will translate to another last place finish. He was on a bad team in a bad league. I'm trying to imagine him guarding someone like AJ Hoggard at MSU or Bruce Thornton at OSU. Its not going to end well. Hopefully his role is like 10-12 minutes off the bench.

He's a unique ball player and I like his game. It'll be interesting to see how much of it transfers I'm definitely more pumped about him than I was like Samuels.

He shoots a high volume and good percentage from 3, gets to the free throw line at a good clip and has pretty decent "do sh!t" stats. One of the things that I like is that he rebounds the ball really well for a 5'10" guard.

There is an incredibly interesting (to me) correlation between small guards with good rebound rates and productivity. It's like Steph Curry (I'm NOT comparing him to Curry), his rebound numbers are incredible for a guy his size and athletic makeup. He is a much better rebounder than 6'7" freak athlete Andrew Wiggins. It's because a ton of guard rebounding happens because of how you see the game - you can tell how the ball is going to bounce off the rim, you find open spots, etc.

It's a long winded way of saying a 5'10" guy who grabs 4 rebounds per game likely really see's the floor well.

Guess it goes back to the type of player Ben wants to mortgage his career on then lol.

An underachieving 4 ⭐️ looking for easy playing time, or a nobody looking to make a name for himself.

At this point I have no expectations of some big name transfer landing here. My mind wants Taran Armstrong and Jackson Paveletzke to headline the transfer class..

But my heart that’s set in reality knows it’ll probably be Dezi Jones and Rodrick Payne

thats where i am at as well. go get AJ as the back up PG before this guy.
and continue to push the full court press on a high end PG who you can legit hand the keys too.

Well, they were pretty good for a team from the MAAC. Gave Penn State everything they wanted.

I’m not saying Dezi is my first choice. But they could do much worse. Don’t remember the last time the Gophers had a spark plug 3 point shooting point guard on the roster

If he is our first commit we are done for. He's the kid you get in late April to fill out your 12th spot. If he's priority 1 then Johnson will be fired with 365 days.

Good observations. I've never looked at that: good rebounding small guards so maybe I'll start looking a little closer at that. I'm fine with him being recruited as one of three transfer guards.. He played for a small school conference but he was second team all conference so he's unlikely to be total crap.
