2022 Transfer Portal Discussion

For all of those who thought transfers would slow down....

They are fairly compensated so I don't feel bad for coaches per se but man there is a lot to take in. Not only coaching but filling out your team each year and having really no idea who is staying/going each year.

If you are looking at it positively, this provides a team like ours a chance to get good quickly. 20ish years ago we would be in for a 4-5 year build trying to get freshman to come in every year and build. Now you can pluck guys and move up in a hurry. For me that is why there has been less patience with a new staff, you can build a team quick with experienced pieces. Hopefully Ben and staff either have inklings of guys leaving or get in on some of these guys early, would be nice to have a strong start to the offseason.
Transfers are generally one of these types:
1. Want to move up a level
2. Want more PT
3. Want to win bigger on the same level
4. Want to go home (best prospects for our Gophers to get a high end player)

We are going to get: 1's, 2's and 4's - not 3's.

Interesting. So they're pretty much in the same spot as us, maybe us a little ahead if Fox / Ihnen can play up to potential.

But yes I can't imagine Sessoms has got his heart set on MN.
Yep- that's about right. They had a little better year in conference than us with 7 wins but otherwise- similar.

Loblaw manages to scuttle yet another thread with an ego driven pissing contest over nothing. Rinse, lather, repeat.
smartest guy on the board, but I'm sure you knew that! He does have a point about compiling data (assts absolutely help with it), but every time there is a disagreement or an opinion isn't fully fleshed out its always a rant followed by how stupid or pathetic the other person is lol. Tale as old as time.

Maybe a 5 instead of a 4? Position versatility, yes I know but more so making the point about the players skillset. I'd assume we want another guy that can hang tough in the post, as Payne is probably able to play some at the 4 in certain rotations, but don't have another guy on the roster that is a 5.

Last I noticed, your discussion couldn't get over the head of a midget in a deep hole. Chicken little, sky is falling, crybaby panic about the coaching staff is not actually a discussion.
Chicken Little is over your head, we've established that. You should try to find a children's story that you can actually comprehend.

As far as a discussion about the coaching staff, I support our coaching staff. I merely said we should be desperate to acquire talent in any way possible. We aren't in a position to have any concerns about positions of need. We didn't use all of our scholarships last year and we only played 5 guys during the last game. That is about as dire of a situation in terms of talented depth that any team I can ever remember. That point and my argument that every successful person delegates tedious tasks to their team has set you off on this hissy fit.

I'm also not crying about the staff. I like our staff. Unlike you, I'm capable of supporting something while also having a discussion about issues. You're far too emotional for anything like that. Any critique or imagined critique sets you into this kind of hissy fit.

It's okay. I like Ben. I wasn't even criticizing him. I just think he is smart enough delegate (he does too) and that we are desperate to add talent (he agrees with me too).

That's precisely the opposite thing that happened here. Dakota mocked cbj for a typo. I never said a thing about Dakota until he brought up my profession and mocked typos by other posters. I simply pointed out that it was funny he was mocking others while making the same mistake.

Go back and read the thread.

While I was reading the Board Barrister's posts I looked up from the screen to watch my dog spinning around the room nipping at his own tail. My pup had the sense to stop after about ten seconds or so. That put him ahead of our Barrister.
Double drink!

Go back and read my post, I started it by disagreement, follwed by rant, and ended with you calling someone stupid. You voiced your disagreement on how they compile transfer date (that was your first quoted post/direct interaction with Dakota, and it was totally fair), followed by a lengthy rant, and ended it with calling him stupid. You love telling people to go back and read but are incapable of doing it yourself when you get worked up.

EDIT: I mean if it was really about him mocking them I'm not sure why that wasn't mentioned when you started your rant. Appreciate your diligence in making sure no shots are taken on the board though.

?

Someone that is more of a center(also called a 5), since we currently won't have a center on the roster other than Payne. Maybe I misread that initial post, thought you meant PG/G/PF when saying we are going to take 1s, 2s, and 4s.

Was referencing position versatility because usually someone chimes in and says we need guys that can play multiple spots, which is true. I feel we will have plenty of bodies that can play the 4. How great they will play may be another question.

BGA's post listed four reasons for players entering the portal. his "1,2,3" was referring to those reasons or categories - NOT to positions on the court.

and now - a few thoughts:

on timing - being one of the first schools to contact a player if nothing else shows interest. Having said that - don't contact players unless you have real interest.

on evaluation - the Gophers have 3 assistant coaches. I suspect they will play some role in evaluating potential portal candidates.

I just checked back here and saw that this argument continued for awhile. You've made the right points here and I appreciate your support. Dakota was an asshole and when called out on it, he doubled down on asshole. You're absolutely right. This had nothing to do with the coach's intelligence or abilities. People who make close to $2 million per year shouldn't be wasting their precious time doing a preliminary sorting of the wheat from the chaff in the transfer portal. That's the job for a knowledgable student assistant or low level staffer.

Perhaps Dakota just doesn't like lawyers or college professors and just wants an opportunity to spit at them. I really don't care why. Fuck him. He's not worth it.

Yep, I def misread it. I agree, they have 3 and I’m sure more (recruiting or ops coordinator/GA maybe?) are involved as well. Pretty sure that is standard across all college programs.

I think timing is big too, and unfortunately we probably have a decent amount of it being we aren’t playing in a tournament. We probably don’t hear about all of the contact that is made though, so not too worried about the tweets that have came out with the weird wording about reaching out soon or whatever was said.

BGA is on with his reasoning kids might want to come here too.

Payton Sparks, MAC ROY, All MAC MAC All-Freshmen

(Apologies if already posted. Kind of doubt if this is what Ben is looking for.)

I find this type of player interesting at C. Would a kid like this be interested in coming in and sharing time with Payne at center and find out if he can compete at Big Ten level? Looks like a wide body / rebounder- the type of kid we really didn't have this year.

This guy from North Dakota State just dropped:

Tyree Eady

Looks like a solid player. He's from Wisconsin (a suburb of Madison). If he doesn't go there, he might come here. He'd be a one-year transfer.

This kid put up extremely good numbers for a freshman big man and his playing time and numbers improved as the season went on. That's not just because the MAC is a weak conference; Ball State didn't play a very good nonconference slate.

This kid would be a good acquisition and, if we can get him, we probably should take him but getting someone like him will not be easy. It's still early yet but the number of available big men in the portal who have shown a lot of potential is not at all plentiful.

Seeing 447 in the portal now.
Hartford appears to be the leader with 8. From the little I read they are transitioning from DI down to D3, so having that many players in the portal is understandable.

Coaching change there too.

Yeah, I heard the former coach was Mo Williams. I believe that's the same Mo Williams who was a pretty decent NBA player. He's got a new job at Jackson State though.

The reality is unless a player has ties here (Dawson Garcia) we are unlikely to be a very attractive spot. I saw that Texas Tech, Illinois, Indiana, Iowa State, Wichita State, and many others have already reached out within 24 hours.

He's probably out of our league. Like you said, lots of demand but very little supply.

Ha! Almost the first name alphabetically and I miss it. Don't think Ben is going to calling me for players in the portal.

I wouldn't worry . I don't think Ben is looking for Alabama State players! In addition to likely aiming for a higher talent level, Ben seems to like those kids from prestigious schools if his first year is any indication. The Ivy League doesn't give 5th year scholarships so there are always plenty from that league in the portal.

Speaking of those, I don't know if this kid Nic Lynch has been mentioned yet. He's another Patriot League big man. Doesn't appear to be the rugged type but appears to be a very good shooting one.

Well, that didn't take long, did it?

The only silver lining in this information is that it's at least giving us an idea of our parameters so we don't waste too much time chasing after people who aren't likely to accept our offers. I still think we should offer and do a little persuasion but don't spend too much time and go after numerous others. To get one big man who is at least decent, we're probably going to have to throw out at least 10 or 12 offers.
