No surprise that the first three have us going to lower bowls than the rest. I wonder how much of this is due to their more pessimistic view of our likely remaining performance and how much is due to their view that the Gophers will be assigned a bowl below their performance merit (like last year).

My guess is the former. Probably think Minnesota is a paper tiger now because of the Purdue loss.

This site is called "Pro Football Network."

This page has Indiana in the Reliaquest (Outback) against LSU while fellow in-stater Purdue will meet Western Michigan in the Quick Lane Bowl. It's not impossible that Indiana could be bowl eligible but a New Year's Day bowl?

They have Texas v. Illinois in the Guaranteed Rate Bowl. Perhaps Illinois could end up there (after all, we did last year) but I think Texas can and will do better.

Nebraska will be bowl eligible and play Syracuse in the Pinstripe Bowl. Not impossible but I think getting three more wins will be hard going.

Finally, this site regards Maryland so highly that it has them assigned to two bowls: against Kentucky in the Music City Bowl and against Auburn in Duke's Mayo Bowl (which I thought matches a Big Ten team against an ACC team this season).

I gotta be honest, Nashville would be a fun bowl on New Year’s Eve.

Anything lower and I’m not interested.

It's a great tourist city but Nashville is fairly cold in late December; not any better than NYC and possibly worse. I remember looking for my car at night for about 30 minutes in an outdoor Nashville AP parking lot in late December about 20 years ago. It was not a comfortable experience. I would think Charlotte NC (Duke's Mayo) would be better than either of those cities although I haven't been there at that time of year.
 



 

 

Other than the four ranked teams, it's just a whole soup of teams at 3 or 4 total wins in the Big Ten, plus Purdue and Maryland maybe a half-step above the soup but solidly below the top 4.

Charlotte in late December is nothing special (wife is from the area, so I've been there plenty around the holidays).

Sorry, that's what I was saying. There's been a couple years when we've been down there where it's pretty nice weather, but more often than not, it's been highs of upper 30s/lower 40s.

Pinstripe vs. Duke would be a disappointing result of this season.

PSU was sent to the Outback Bowl last year with a 7-5 record.

Our ceiling at this point is probably Tampa Bay and that would require being picked over Purdue, a 3rd NY6 B1G team, and for the bowl suits to not care that we were just there in 2020. We could win out and likely still end up in Nashville. Drop Wisconsin or Iowa and we’re looking at Duke’s Mayo or Pinstripe.

We beat Purdue head to head last year and ended up with the same record. They went to the Music City Bowl over us. So there is a possibility that the Gophers get the nod this year.

I think we had a great showing in 2020 in Tampa so that may go a long way in us getting invited back. Need to keep winning though.

Yup. Got to win three of the final four at least. Get to 8-4....and we've got a good shot to get a good SEC opponent in the Citrus, ReliaQuest, or Music City Bowl. Would like to think the Big Ten brass gives the Gophers the tie breakers seeing as how a 7-5 PSU team....and two other 8-4 teams (that the Gophers beat heads up) "jumped" the Gophers last year.

Yes, but they wouldn't do that for us. PSU is still a national brand. Last year, when we were in the Guaranteed Rate Bowl, that game had the worst attendance of that bowl's history (by a significant margin). That includes the years when that bowl had other names.

That seems like a pretty fair appraisal of the situation to me.

Doesn't matter. The conference has as much say as who goes to what bowls. At some point, they need to make sure that records dictate bowl placement. Can't imagine that they'd try to justify continuously favoring certain programs over others.

Also...the Gophers represented very well at the Outback Bowl a few years back. People will travel to decent bowls if we get them.
