2018 Gopher Baseball

I was very critical of 14 and the bunt by Larson last night, but I also have to say this, I would not of let Larson swing at the first pitch tonight after the back to back walks and 14 let him do it and he hits a 3 run homer. I was impressed. My philosophy is different in both scenarios, but it worked out. He obviously knows his team and has done a great job. Very happy for Coach Anderson, his staff, players, and all the people that made it happen. Thank you Gopher baseball! It was a great treat and you represent Minnesota in an excellent manner.

Great weekend. I went to all the games and my sons traveling tournament in the mornings. I think I've watch 100 innings of baseball since Friday. Lol

Let's win the Supers!!!

This thread and the emotional back and forth regarding tonight's game just makes me laugh. I particularly loved the Minnesota is doomed posts in the first couple innings.
I sat out on my patio and enjoyed a fun game. And by the way, those bunts were the right call in those situations. Anderson hasn't coached for 37 years because he's an idiot.
Great weekend for the Gophers!

So here's a scenario: Oregon State is an incredible team. Intuition says if we get to a game 3 we have no chance at beating them throwing Stevenson/Lackney. So... why not start Max Meyer in game 3 if the season is on the line?? He has experience going 50+ pitches and would give Oregon State all they could handle if it came down to a single game with a trip to Omaha on the line.

A fun atmosphere tonight. Man there was a lot of ex Gophers there too. Not surprising though as it is a step that Gophers baseball has taken and the alumni would want to be there to see it.

I am not sure about Max, but either Schulze or Rose would seem like better options than Lackney or Stevenson. There was just no life in Stevenson's arm tonight and control was not good.

On a related note, I really think Rose was the MVP of the game tonight. He restored some order to a game that looked like it was gonna end up 15-14. Rose would have looked even better if not for the popup mess with his first batter and the bases loaded.

Former players definitely were there in full force helping however they could.

Major, major bench jockeying coming from the stands from those guys. A lot of great one-liners directed at UCLA players and head coach!

I agree with the bunts too. We needed to keep scoring. And while we ended up having big innings both times, you didn't know that when the bunt was called. And we pretty much shut down UCLA from there on out, so scratching across a few more runs was the right call. Didn't matter either way in the end.

To the guy who sat behind me last night who barked non-stop gibberish from inning 1-9.. Thank you for supporting the Gophers, but I can honestly say I hate you...

Was he doing the “hey batter batter swing”?
Or more crude like “little baby batter can’t control his bladder”?

Either one of those would have been a refreshing change...This is a guy who I presume was walking down the street and said to himself "Hmm baseball game, don't know what that's about, but since I'm such an @sshole, I might just check it out"

Lol!!
It was a fun game. My first game at the new Siebert and I will definitely go back.

I saw Drew Hmielewski playing catch with the right fielder between innings. I know this year’s team is full of seniors but I am assuming he will get his shot next year.

Corvallis is going to be tough, but the Beavs can be beat. They struggled to put up runs on UCLA a couple weeks ago (although they went 2-1, they outscored the Bruins just 7-5 over the three-game set in Corvallis). The pitching has to be better and the bats need to stay as hot as they were yesterday, but maybe the Gophs can eek out a couple wins. It's not highly likely but stranger things have happened.

Reggie and Patrick are solid starters and I believe they will be as tough a pair as Oregon State as seen all year. I like our chances better to win 2 straight than I do trying to cobble a game 3 rotation. I think the Beavers are the best team left in the field, but we have a chance if we play clean and don't give up extra outs or freebies. Coach A said this team is the most competitive group he has ever had. Sometimes, pure will perseveres.

How is home team decided in the super regionals?

Per the handbook:

Two Teams Advancing with Equal Regional Seeds. For Game One, the winner of a coin flip will be the home team. The loser of the coin flip will be the home team in Game Two. A second coin flip will determine the home team in Game Three, if necessary. These coin flips must both take place during the pre-tournament meeting. The traveling team will call the coin toss for Game One, while the host team will call the coin toss for Game Three or defer the call to their opponent.

I find this to be really stupid. Your'e the host and higher seed. You should always be the home team.

I would say the higher seeded team bat last in games 1 and 3 with the lower seed getting game 2. Don't want to give too big an advantage based on a subjective seeding.

That was great last night. The series was won when JA went all in with Max in the 8th on Saturday.
Very happy for coach A! Really pissed at the seeding committee to put my two alma maters against one another in the supers. The annoying guy referenced above had to be in the back of section 1.

I watched all but 3 or 4 of the Oregon State games this year on TV/ online and saw them play in person in Surprise, AZ against Neb and Ohio State and in Springfield, MO against Missouri State. If you guys would like I could give you a rundown of the team. I know them like Goldy Gopher on this site knows the Gophers.

I would also agree with this. It cannot be overstated how dominant Meyer's performance was on Saturday. It seemed UCLA had 2-3 runners on base every inning in the first 7 and that the Gophers were reeling. I kept saying to the guy next to me that we should feel very fortunate to only be down 1 run. Meyer's performance changed the tone. I know he entered when the game was tied but I felt those 3 strikeouts in the 8th was what really changed the momentum. It told the Bruins they had their chance to score and the time was now up. The crowd was electric in those final 3 innings. I feel it changed the entire weekend.

Of course they can win. The Gophers have a really good team this year, and I fully expect them to win.

Will any of these games be televised?

We will know for sure later but the chances are very good. There will only be 2 super regionals west of the central time zone (the other being Fullerton vs Washington) so chances are we'll both get on tv at 9-10pm CDT.

FWIW, Gopher commit Andrew Wilhite is hitting .417 with 11 HR and 54 RBI this spring with his high school team in Illinois. At one point this season, he went yard in FIVE consecutive at bats. Those are unbelievably good power numbers coming from a high school prospect. He will likely be a day 1 starter on the left side of the infield next year as either Coffey or Vavra's successor.
