2016 college basketball coaching firings/changes thread

It is a done deal. The depth at the top of the ACC is incredible. Look at the coaches at the top 5 schools.

Do you spend a lot of time textually fellating Tony Bennett at other boards for schools to which he has zero connection? Or are we the only ones to be granted this exclusive privilege?

Is it difficult to offend or put people down ? I am actually a fan of UCLA and the Pac-conference of champions but i am not delusional or so provincial that i would pretend that the ACC does not have the best collection of coaches. My firm has represented 34 current NCAA coaches and several Athletic directors and every single one of them think Bennett is already a coaching star. One defeat by more than 7 points in three years ! I keep my Gopher tickets for friends and family . Hoping that one day the U will hire a coach in Bennetts' galaxy. Family will still use seats in 106 low row, but can not even give them to friends for this dumpster fire. Your not exclusive in my sharing of what great hires look like, simply the board of the program that i wish would be of quality.

Er, Jamie Dixon to TCU? Did not see that coming.

TCU keeps getting far better coaches than they deserve. It's an awful job. I thought Dixon might be a good candidate should be find ourselves in a search next year. Probably not now.

So no, then?

Maybe some casino booster money is in the package. Would be a great hire for the Rebels. Cronin is the real deal as a coach and would dominate out west I think.

Excellent coach and by all accounts an excellent human being. He did well without marquee talent in most of his time at Pitt. There must be something personal there. If he thought the ACC was tough, it will seem like a cakewalk compared to the Big XII. There ain't no Boston College's in the Big XII.

Is this really true or is it speculation? There is not a link to a news source in the thread.
He just took over their version of Boston College

Pitino to Cincy? If so, which one?

Per Jeff Goodman of ESPN-

Johnny Dawkins has taken the Central Florida job, sources told ESPN.

per CBS:

Stephen F. Austin's Brad Underwood has reached an agreement to become Oklahoma State's next head coach, CBS Sports has learned.

A formal announcement is expected soon.

Underwood concluded his third season as a head coach on Sunday with a last-second loss to Notre Dame in the Round of 32 of the NCAA Tournament. His resume features an incredible 89-14 record with three Southland regular-season titles, three Southland tournament titles, and three trips to the NCAA Tournament.

He just took over their version of Boston College

TCU at least won a few games this year. Eagles were winless in conference in both football and basketball. He probably has a little more to work with than at BC.

per ESPN:

Mike Dunleavy Sr. has reached a deal to become the next basketball coach at Tulane, multiple sources told ESPN on Friday.

Dunleavy Sr., 62, has been a head coach in the NBA for the Los Angeles Lakers, Milwaukee Bucks, Portland Trail Blazers and Los Angeles Clippers. He stepped down as the Clippers' coach in 2010 and met with the Lakers about their coaching vacancy in 2014.

per ESPN:

Georgia Tech has parted ways with coach Brian Gregory, the school announced Friday.

Gregory, 49, replaced Paul Hewitt in 2011 and did not take the Yellow Jackets to the NCAA tournament during his tenure. He was 76-86 overall and 27-61 in ACC play.

"At the end of the day the evaluation for me came down to what does the future look like,'' athletic director Mike Bobinski said. "Do we in fact have a clear path forward to greater success and higher levels of success in the years ahead, and my determination was, I didn't see it. I ultimately didn't see it and ultimately led me to the decision that we needed to make a change."

Mark Price, who just completed his first season as coach of the Charlotte 49ers, issued a statement Saturday saying he's not interested in the vacancy at Georgia Tech.

The Yellow Jackets on Friday parted ways with Brian Gregory, who went 76-86 in his five seasons at Tech.

"I wish my alma mater Georgia Tech well in its search for a new head coach," Price said in a statement Saturday. "I am committed to the Charlotte 49ers men's basketball program."

per CBS:

Mick Cronin has passed on a lucrative opportunity to become UNLV's next men's basketball coach and decided to remain at Cincinnati, he announced Friday afternoon.

"I would like people to try and understand after 10 years of dedicated service I chose to evaluate my career and my life,” Cronin said after returning from a trip to Las Vegas, where he met with UNLV officials. “Reflecting through that process was extremely difficult, but it was something I needed to do for me personally. The city of Cincinnati and the University are special places to me and I've always said what an honor it is to be the head coach at my alma mater. This program has come such a long way in 10 years and we've still got work to do and goals to achieve. The 2016-17 season starts for me today and I can't wait for the future that lies ahead for the Bearcats and this University.”

Nice coaching progression for the former Jayhawk. Per CBS:

UAB's Jerod Haase has reached an agreement in principle to become the next head coach at Stanford, a source told CBS Sports on Friday morning.

A formal announcement is expected soon.

CBS Sports' Jon Rothstein has also confirmed this report.

CBS Sports first reported Thursday that Haase had spoken with the school and was considered among the leading candidates. Haase has been UAB's coach for four seasons and won 20 games in each of the past two years. UAB made the 2015 NCAA Tournament and won C-USA's regular-season title this season under Haase. The 41-year-old California native was raised only about 200 miles from Stanford's campus. Before UAB, he was an assistant under Hall of Fame coach Roy Williams at both Kansas and North Carolina.

You know the old saying that UAB is the Stanford of Birmingham.

Surprising on Stallings. I assume he has turned down better offers than this over the years. I figured he had decided to retire from Vanderbilt.

There were rumblings he might be a season away from getting canned anyway

geez, unlv hires the arkansas little rock coach. goes to show its hard to upgrade coaches. i have to imagine their fan base won't be fired up about this one.

I think UNLV is a tough job to fill. Sin City may be cool for some people, but a turn off for a lot of others. New guy Sounds like someone striking while the iron is hot. Wasn't he a D-II coach a couple of years ago? Lots of resources and not huge conference competition makes it a place that could potentially be regularly on top of the league with the right guy in charge.

St. Louis University makes it official a day after reports initially surfaced: Travis Ford has been hired to coach the SLU men’s basketball team.

“We are thrilled to welcome Travis and his family into the program,” SLU Athletics Director Chris May said. “Our vision for Billiken basketball is to be nationally competitive, and Travis shares in that vision.”

“St. Louis is a great sports city and my family and I are honored to become a part of it,” Ford said in the statement. “We have a great setting to recruit to with a wonderful city, beautiful campus, terrific school and a first-class facility.”
