2014-15 Other Bowl Games Thread

I was at a family Christmas most of the day yesterday so the games were on but the volume was way down. In the Penn St-BC game, it looked obvious to me that Penn St. scored the tying TD late in the game but they called him down at the 1-yard line. They reviewed it and still said he was short. Penn St. eventually scored the game tying TD after the stupid penalty by one of their players.

What they hell happened there? How was the call not overturned? Or did I just not see it correctly?

Really? You would be fine with a Gophers player taunting the visiting sideline after a good play? The player who did it was an idiot. He just committed a penalty on the play before.

Nope. Really do not believe that merited a 15 yarder.

Fair enough. I just think it would really be opening up a can of worms if you start letting that happen.

Agree dumb play by player. Do that in the NFL next year.

I can't watch the games since I am at work but the ND-LSU game looks pretty good so far. Back and forth.

It's a very good game. Caught myself cheering out loud after the last Notre Dame TD. Cheering for the Golden Domers! My wife called a couple of friends to stage an intervention.

I must really hate the SEC...

Notre Dame wins with a field goal as time expires really surprised thought they would really struggle with LSU. Miles call for the fake FG before half comes back to hurt although I really thought the call on the field of the runner being short of the goal line should have been overturned and should have been a TD on the fake.

Let the SEC implosion begin! First LSU, now we need Georgia to lose followed by Ole Miss and Miss St.

Stanford has to have one of the weakest fan bases. I remember seeing their home games during that run where they were a top 10 program for years and their stadium was maybe 75% filled. Tonight, they have a bowl game 15 miles from campus and Levi Stadium is very sparsely attended.

I'd have to imagine they have a decent number of alumni that still live in the Bay Area.

Not necessarily the explanation, but one of the things working against Stanford: It's a really small school - smaller than Northwestern - with only 7,019 undergraduate students this year (the U has 30,135 undergraduates this year). Even if there is a good-sized alumni base in the Bay Area, it's probably not THAT large.

And with a school like Stanford, I imagine they spread out far and wide across the country and world, more so than many other universities.

I'm just surprised more non-alumni from the area don't go to games. Stanford hosted the PAC 12 championship a few years ago before they started having the game at a neutral field and they had maybe 40,000 fans in the stands.

Great day of games today. TCU has a chance against Ole Miss to show the committee what they're missing - or, they will show that the Big XII is really vastly overrated (conference has yet to win a game, 0-3 so far).

I'm trying to figure out why the Cotton Bowl is the only one of the big six to play at the same time as other bowl games. In the past, they've played some big bowls after the new year. Having one of the big six bowls on Friday night would have made more sense to me.

ESPN is trying to own the days, basically (despite the fact that they're cannibalizing their other networks, ABC and ESPN2, in the process). They probably figure (rightly) that if they get people tuned in early and have consistently strong programming they won't change the channel.

Indeed. It's gonna be a fun day.

But I think the college playoff (Rose and Sugar Bowls) will get people to tune in already. I don't think they need Michigan St.-Baylor to get them interested. Meanwhile, on Friday they had an opportunity to show one more marquee game without any direct competition.

I also wonder if the NFL playoffs throws things off this year being they are so close to the new year. They can't have marquee bowl games on Saturday and Sunday. Last year New Year's Day was on Wednesday so they had an extra day after New Year's and before the NFL playoffs to have big games. Last year the Sugar Bowl was on Jan 2, and the Cotton Bowl and Orange Bowl were on Jan 3.

TCU already up 7-0. I see a blowout. Looked dominant on both O and D so far.

Frogs showed up pissed. Ole Miss doesn't know what hit 'em at this point. Still time to turn it around, but this is thorough.

Wow, TCU looks awfully good. Just got 7 on a 15 play drive. And Ole Miss has the #1 D in the country I believe. Just got carved up.
