Agreed, but I think that's where, with all the openings, an AD that's swung and missed on his top 12 or 13 candidates might reach for PJ. The question that would arise is probably one of how much more money would it take for PJ to agree to give up some control of the team to the AD (i.e., requiring PJ hire experienced coordinators with some level of autonomy)?

I think he'd be worth a flyer. I would be surprised if when the music stops, he's not sitting in an FBS chair this time next year. He's not likely to end up in a P4 job, but keep an eye on top G6 jobs. Colorado State comes to mind as a job that's his if he wants it but its been a tough place to win. As an SDSU fan, I'm impressed with him. NDSU upgraded when Entz left.

Are you saying PJ doesn’t hire more experienced coordinators so he can have more control over the team? If so, I don’t see it that way. I think he doesn’t hire them because he has a restricted budget for paying coaches. I don’t know if it’s the magic number, but an extra million dollars for the coaches pool would really help.

In fact, I think the coaches salary pool should at least equal Fleck’s annual compensation. It doesn’t have to be all used, but should be there when needed to attract or retain top coaches.

Totally agree on this take. Do people really believe that he would not hire top end coordinators if he had another million bucks to pay out?

If I were a AD at a school with a large budget I would definitely be interested in seeing what PJ could do at their school with a large NIL pool, admin support, and assistant coach budget. Personally I think he has outperformed his relative support at MN by a win a year at least.

Are you saying the Gophers had enough funds to match Heatherman’s offer from Miami? Or had enough to attract a proven DC instead of promoting Collins, who never had any coordinator experience?

I think they could have matched Rossi’s with an extra $300k, but Heatherman was out of range for the U’s pocketbook.

I remember that too, and think it was a few hundred thousand, but not enough to pay a coordinator north of 1.5 million.

The reason he wouldn’t use the full budget if he thinks person X for 800k is just as good or better than person Y for 1.2 million

I think k state and vt have the same problem where one guy lifted the program for a long time and in the new era might have difficulty because of conference/location.

Not the same resources across the board because NIL and ticket revenue vary, but the TV money and all of that revenue is split up equally. We have plenty of money to pay assistants the going rate. That said, our two current coordinators both are making more than their experience would indicate they should because of their job title not because of their skill set or resume. Do we really think that these two would be coordinators for any other P4 school in America?

These two coordinators are so bad that the team is 7th in an 18 team conference.

I'd rather find a coordinator as good as Phil Parker and worth the money.

PJ likes his internal promotion process. I think its a way to pat himself on the back and keep program cost down so he can get his next raise.

PJ would do better to forgo salary increases and hire better assistants to make he program better. Sadly, PJ's ego would never allow that to happen.

i'd go with its more he values those that have bought into the culture and RTB. I don't think you'd see some guys come in and be willing to adopt that as an outsider and this is a way to get a known commodity in that regard (for better or worse).

Your comments defy logic as they imply that PJ is a narcissist whose behaviors are strictly self serving and have nothing to do with trying to make a better football team (which is a much better strategy to making more money long term than underpaying coordinators in the short term). If PJ was truly a narcissist, he'd be smarter than that.

Narcissists are incapable of maintaining a facade in the long term before cracks start to show, especially in this case with all of the eyes that are on the program. PJ has been doing his thing for well over a decade and has yet to show how his culture is more about him than the players he coaches and the community they participate in. Players keep coming back after they get graduate or are drafted. Players who transferred out talk about how legit he is even though they have no reason to speak of him at all. No off the field issues. Community involvement. The story from last weekend about the kids from the Annunciation school is just another testament to that in a long line of testaments to his quality as human being since he's come here.

He's not perfect. He's not Saban or Day. He can be a much better gameday coach. But he's created a culture and system that has consistently churned out almost 10 years of winning seasons at the NIL era University of Minnesota of all places.

Anyone that's ever been held to a budget knows that is not a wise decision. You always spend right up to the limit or else the new budget will be $800K.

I'm not saying that you are wrong but if PJ had $1.2 million to play with and only spent $800K, that's a mistake.

You may be onto something. It is like the front page editions that the Onion does for days in history like when astronauts landed on the moon. We could have a parallel universe link to "Gopherhole 80s" where we could melt down at Holtz's defection to Notre Dame, debate about the true value of the Metrodome to the Gopher football recruiting, and recall the most recent B1G championship only 20 years in the rear view mirror.

I think he's the best mix of today's coach and the good things left in college football.
