Dawson Garcia returning

Hmmm, Are you sure?

@PeterMac05 has scooped things in the past that no one else knew, and has been correct. He's done it multiple times.

For example he had Hawkins transfer info. Well before it was even speculated.

You didn't need to call him an idiot for posting this in an unassuming manner. He showed his humility, before trying to helpful. He's also displays curiosity in lieu of judgement. Learn a fucking lesson from him.

Yes I'm sure. There is an literal rule that would need to be abolished to let Dawson come back.

Being unable to interpret a basic rule, is in fact idiotic behavior.

I see, so there is "literally" a rule. Well, that changes things.... Perhaps you can tell me next why you interpreted that that wasn't addressed in the OP? Next, you can tell me why that's an example of idiotic behavior?

He's 100% right that there is a literal rule. It's 100% crazy that he has this much trust in the application of those rules. It's been the wild west the last few years. Indiana is openly challenging that exact same rule this year.

From everything I know, MUgopher is correct, I cannot even begin to understand how Garcia could even have the most remote argument for another year of eligibility. But times are weird. . .

With the turmoil that is college athletics today, I don't know if I'd die on the "rules" hill. Everything seems negotiable at this point.

Oh he's correct. He missed the Op addressing it, and calls the OP the idiot.

Especially when considering the OP's history and obvious intent. The OP clearly notes he knows no more.

Best to do what you did and speculate. Or he could at least ask.

It's the same obvious question we all have. We still appreciate his passing off probably the best source the board has ever had.

Just how successful has the NCAA been lately in the application of their eligibility rules when facing litigation?

Asking for a friend.

can the NCAA legally limit someone's ability to gain employment :)
Take this to the (il)logical extreme. Does the NCAA have any authority at all? With all the talk about tournament expansion, what right do they have to limit tournament eligibility at all? Do they have the aithority to organize and seed it? I know this is a ridiculous assertion, but it brings up the question of legal obligations of a supposed voluntary association. Or will the NCAA be struck down as a monopoly or need an antitrust exemption like MLB? Maybe these matters have already been taken up, so someone please chime in.

The proper role of the NCAA in the future is to be a puppet organization that supplies marketing for the product (sports) and occasionally mediates disputes. Other than that, it should collect annual hush money payments to support its mission of doing little and expecting less.

Kids during the Covid period are eligible for 6 years in some cases. We had 2 - 6year players on my daughter's softball team last year.

My daughter could have had two additional years (D3 gymnastics), but she was like, I need to get on with my life and get the fuck out of Wisconsin and back to the Twin Cities.

Hey everyone, OP here, instead of calling people who know more than you a moron, how about you take a second and do about 5 seconds of research. Dawson's FRESHMAN year at Marquette was in the 2020-2021 season, where pretty much everyone in college athletics could apply for a COVID year exemption if they wanted to. After being granted a medical redshirt from UNC and other family issues, I've been told that that year won't count either. assuming these two seasons wouldn't count, after his last 3 at UMN, in theory he would have one season of eligibility remaining. It would be shocking, but 100% possible. Thanks

Most of us are tracking the logic, and appreciate sharing rumors (even if they don't pan out).

If Fox can get 8 years, Dawson is probably likely to get a 6th if he wants it.

I think the Thorson-led Gophers should pick a site on Thursday and just show up and demand to play. Bring the U Lawyers instead of the band.

My only question/confusion, is it your understanding that this is a done deal, or more of a "he's going to appeal for a 6th year" type of thing?

He did play 16 games for UNC, though, which is above the established 30% threshold for a medical redshirt. That’s why Tonje got a 6th year, having only played 8. Are they waiving the 30% rule somehow?

Even with this explanation of how Garcia might get a sixth year, we haven't seen any evidence that Garcia wants to come back for another year. Garcia might have to be considered the most loyal Gopher basketball player in history if he returns.

He just played three years with teams that produced a cumulative record of 43-54. Frankly, regardless of who we get as a coach, I'd be pleasantly surprised if we finish significantly better next year than the 15-17 record we had this year. Virtually all of his age cohorts are gone and it likely would be a much younger team next season. If I were him and could play another year, I'd be strongly tempted to try somewhere else. Of course, we don't know much about his private life and that could give reasons why he may want to stay another year.

Isn't a covid year just a bonus year? So, if he had that he could play 5/6 years?

Loyal and honest about cashing in.

He's played 5 years.

2020 didn't count due to covid
2021 he played 16 games and it's in question if he would get a waiver
2022-2024 he played all 3 seasons.
