All Things 2014 Basketball Recruiting Thread

Jerrelle Deberry ‏@JaySav3Hunna

My signing day is on Wednesday @ destiny and I'm let everybody know what time tomorrow come show me some love
I know it says on some of the recruiting sites that the Gophers had interest in him but does anyone know if he ever received a Gopher offer?

STrib blog: With Gaston Diedhiou set to sign, Bakary Konate is Minnesota's top remaining target

Six-eleven, 230-pound center Bakary Konate could make a decision as early as tomorrow and Minnesota appears to be on good footing.

A short list of names that have been tossed around in association with the Gophers seems to hold little substance. Minnesota appears to have cooled on Kentucky power forward Jackson Davis and North Carolina power forward Jakeem Yates. Interest in Anthony Allen, a 7-foot JUCO that has been speculated about, appears to be low right now.

I wonder how close Amelia really follows recruiting. Jackson Davis has been off the radar for a month after he cut his list down, it had previously been reported that Konate was taking the ACT recently so unless he really got his results back quick I doubt he would want to commit before knowing if he is eligible, Gueye has said he hasn't talked with Gopher coaches in a while and after getting Diedhiou it would seem pretty obvious Gueye is probably out, and then she makes no mention of Justin Martin, Ryan Johnson, or Zach Lofton who seem to be three of the guys the Gophers are interested in right now.

Amelia is embarrassingly out of touch with the program. She is about as knowledgeable as any fan who watches the games, but doesn't follow the team at all otherwise. All of her "information" is weeks if not months old. Any Gopher fan would be better off reading GH once a week than reading anything she publishes. She spends too much time messing around with instagram and talking about bigfoot. I seriously wonder why she is a sports journalist, she doesn't even seem to be interested in her job.

+1. This was a brutal update from Amelia. She would have been better off writing nothing and just continuing posting pictures of her vacation on twitter than this. The only thing I can think of is she had this blog written a few weeks ago and finally hit "submit."

Yup.

And Myron continues his "insult anything Minnesota" act on Twitter (including hockey). So basically, the Strib sucks at hiring Gophers beat writers. It's pathetic.

Marcus is much, much better. He may not break a lot of news, but he provides good coverage and is always good about re-Tweeting relevant news from other sources. He's good on the beat.

GH will always be a better source for anything Gopher football/basketball related than any respected form of journalism. I don't even read other sources most of the time cause I know if anything breaks, it'll be here in minutes. You have numerous members here who are locked onto Twitter like hawks, ready for the first piece of Gopher information to drop. There's really no point to her even trying to provide for the group here, there's no way she could keep up with the recruiting Twitterverse that's out there. Really, I consider her more of the resource to the casual fan, the ones who only read stuff like the Strib for their Gopher knowledge and a weekly (monthly) update is really all they need.

That said, if she was that intense beat person who was breaking stories and all that, I'd love that. I just don't think the newspapers here really lend themselves to that type of resources for Gopher programs.

I don't care who breaks the story, I just want this class to close strong!

I hope my post doesn't derail this thread. Hopefully we have some new 2014 recruiting news in the next day or so since it sounds like Pitino and Co are going hard after a few different recruits.

I think she is an appealing writer for the casual fan, but she isn't someone who a very interested fan would consult for news.

Not mentioning Ryan Johnson would seem to indicate a lack of even casual investigation given that his scheduled campus visit has been listed on the Rivals database for at least a week or more.

If it does, GH crew will delete them and clean this thread up right away. No veering of topic allowed!

Was anybody else at the Nook last night around 9pm? I saw Norwood eating/meeting with a young man who looks like a BB player (6-2, 6,3) but it could have been another sport.

What exactly does a basketball player look like? I get if he's 6-11, but...

How does a (6-2, 6-3) young man look like a BB player? Did he look Black?

Ok I might be racist but black, Athletic. Looks like someone I would want on my basketball team!

He was somebody I would pick first in a pick up game.

I'm guessing Angry is using a polite way to try to say a black young man with an athletic build. Not something I would say, but I just get the impression that that's what he's is going after. No foul intention there! I get what he means.
*on another note, probably not a recruit though, because the AD doesn't do the recruiting.

Angry, just giving you a hard time. Totally get it.

Have I been transported back to the 60s here? I mean the whole day has kind of seemed like a twilight zone episode. Hmm...

That's what I was thinking. But thought maybe we were putting on the full court press. Who knows he might be part of the student council

Good as gold is fitting on this one...saying what everyone was thinking.

Not too excited for Lofton or Johnson but Justin Martin would instantly improve this team next year. Team would have that strong wing we need with instant scoring help. Takes some pressure off of Morris. McNeil could back up Hollins. Mason backs up Mathieu. Josh Martin and Gaston add some depth to power forward. Two senior centers returning, maybe Konate to back them up. Still have King and Buggs. Pretty cool.

Also we could keep the Hollins name confusion thing going but this time it could be Josh Martin and Justin Martin.

And whenever either of them dunked, the student section could hold up signs that said "Welcome to J-Mart."

Sure he would, but there are numerous coaches out there thinking the same thing. He'll be a 5th year senior who can play right away and put up good numbers for a strong program as a junior. A guy like that is like gold. You can bet that Minnesota will not be the highest rated program chasing him. Last year Josh Davis was a 5th year transfer who put up very good numbers for an obscure program like Tulane. He had all kinds of offers and eventually decided on San Diego State (a final 16 team with over 30 wins and located in one of the very best climates in the nation).

This team would very likely be better with someone like Martin, but this team should also be better with enough decent depth that the coach can turn to other players when other players are having poor games.

Pitino reportedly had him ready to go to Louisville before taking the assistant job at Florida. So there is a relationship there. That is what we have going for us.

Wait? He's got junior eligibility? Is that possible?
