All Things 2014 Basketball Recruiting Thread

I also don't care for this kid... There are better options for us out there through the JUCO/transfer/HS route. There's a reason his best offer is UNC-Asheville. Lets not take recruits just to take them. If we don't find guys we feel can make an impact here, there's nothing wrong with banking a scholly for 2015.

"we feel" these recruiting threads are the most entertaining thing on Gopherhole.

"We", referring to the coaching staff, as this is the team I follow and root for so I use "we" even though I'm not apart of the team. Apply a little common sense... Don't be "that guy".

If he's a legit shooter, I'll take him. There is a spot on this team for a 6'6 shooter.
Agree with this looking at the roster there really doesn't seem to be a knockdown shooter aside from maybe Andre right now so if he really is a legit shooter especially at his size I think that is the type of thing the Gophers could use on the roster.

I only glanced at the film, so I have no idea how good he is. What I liked was, he found his spot, set his feet, squared himself up and waited for his teammates to find him. Coach P. didn't show it last season, but I wonder if he would go with a designated 3 point shooter against zones etc. Clem the Gem did this periodically. I like his size also.

That's basically what Ethan Wragge was. He made 360 FGs in his career 334 of them were 3-pointers.

So what? How many under the radar MN kids have an unimpressive list of offers, only then to have Gophers fans wishing they would have offered them 4 years later when they are playing in the NCAA tournament with a different school?

This isn't football. If he was any good then he would have better offers or be more highly rated. Lack of exposure isn't really an issue for basketball recruits and it isn't like he is an under the radar guy. He just isn't very good.

Number 1 rated kid in mn in 2010 was some kid from Columbia heights, never got offered and is doing nothing in college, yet people complain about Jett. Hindsight is 20/20, bet there are going to be mn players we should have offered from this class, but no one is vouching for any of them now.

I wonder if the Columbia Heights kid your speaking of is the Illinois state transfer zach Lofton?

Or you could be talking about Jacob Thomas. He went to San Diego State, then to a Texas JUCO, then to UTEP after that I lost track of him.

How about the list of mn guys who we don't offer and turns out they really werent good enough for the B1G, guarantee that list is bigger, and a lot of those guys are rated higher than the guys that surprise people. How about we trust the judgement of the staff for now. So far, the early track record indicates we should. If down the road, there is a long list of spring recruits that are wasted schollys, by all means. fire away

??? That's exactly what I'm saying, people get so worked up about the staff not offering a hometown kid when they succeed elsewhere but never talk about the other players that go elsewhere and don't succeed, you're kidding yourself if you think minnesota is the only state that produces these under the rader guys. You start giving these schollies just because they are hometown kids and more likely than not they will be busts, there is a reason why the best offers they get are from midmajors and most end up only being midmajor talents, but people always like to point out the guys who over perform, yet tell those people to pick out what player not part of big 3 +JP that will over perform and no one has any idea, yet they will complain when some random 2014 mn kid does well else where at a midmajor down the line, which will happen. You roll the dice with guys who are more likely to succeed, no matter where they are from

I copied the wrong post from you in my quote. I meant to reply to your post about passing on Johnson. My point was if the staff invites a player for a visit. Even if a plan b, I'll support it. This is separate from if he's local or from another state. Merely a comment about trusting the staff for spring recruiting.

I wonder what people would be saying about this kid if he lived in Minnesota. He dropped 40 on a team this year and also put up 26 against one of the most well know prep schools in the country (Oak Hill). It's clear he doesn't have elite athleticism, but that doesn't mean he can't be a valuable piece to our program.

People are pushing for Strickland to get an offer, I'd rather have this kid because of his length and ability to shoot. We need both shooters and longer wings. This guy offers both. I could see him developing into a nice 3 and D wing guy off the bench for four years.

Ryan Johnson has NOT been offered, and he is coming in for a test drive. If the staff thinks he can play, they will offer.

Haven't heard anything new on Konate. Seems like the Piper ship has sailed, but who knows I guess.

Konate, I think, is out, qualification issues, Piper has work to do. Staff is moving on. I think Gaston has taken Konates spot. Sounds like Lofton has a spot, if available immediately

I was looking over the transfer list for guys who will graduate and be eligible next year and was intrigued by Terence Smith, formerly of UT-Martin. He's a 6-4 guard and is a career 40% 3-point shooter. Has averaged double digit points all three years. We're thin at guard and could use the 3-point shooting as well.

If we end up offering and he commits here, I'm going to be 100% behind him, just saying right now I'd rather go in a different direction, a lot of transfers out there that can help us. DeathClutch referenced a good one in terrence smith. I know a lot of people like to bring up lil dre and how none of us knew of him and compare him to johnson, but it couldn't be further apart, Dre had good offers, including memphis, and was also somewhat highly rated juco. I just think there are a lot of good transfers out there, besides this a very large class as is with 6 scholarships, would be in our interest to balance the classes out somewhat by getting transfers.

We deleted some posts in this thread that strayed off-topic. We intend to keep this thread focused on updates on 2014 recruiting. If you would like to take a different topic, please start a new thread. Thank you for understanding.

If we get him, hopefully his 3-point shooting stroke translates to the Big Ten better than Malik's did.

Does Lofton have any chance for a waiver and immediate eligibility? Any chance he walks on if he has to redshirt with a chance to earn a scholarship the following season?

I don't see how we'd know this for many months. If it were the sick relative waiver, I suppose we could be confident in a grant, but nobody's mentioned a sick relative. Other types of waiver applications seem hit or miss.

The school released him from his scholarship so I assume that he would be immediately eligible unless Illinois State puts some type of restriction on his transfer status.

That's not the way it works.

JUCO awards came out and Squirrel didn't even get Honorable Mention:(

His teammate Sam Cassel Jr was named first team JUCO All American.

Marcus blog: Gophers recruiting: Division I transfer a potential landing spot with Pitino?

Pitino actually recruited Martin and got a commitment from him as an assistant on his father’s staff at Louisville in 2009. But Pitino left to become an assistant at Florida that year. And Martin, an Indianapolis native, eventually backed out of his commitment then because he said he didn’t give himself enough time to consider other options.

Interest exists between the Gophers and Martin. But it’s not a done deal. Minnesota’s coaches aren’t even allowed to contact him directly because he has not been officially released from Xavier. That won’t happen until he gets his undergraduate degree.

It makes sense for Minnesota to pursue another wing player with the departure of senior guard Austin Hollins, who was named tournament MVP after leading the Gophers to the NIT title. Junior college transfer Carlos Morris is expected to take over for Hollins. But Morris’ competition right now is limited to sophomore-to-be Daquein McNeil.

Well. That solves the mystery from the other thread. Would be a very nice addition. He would really improve our team. It would really increase likelihood of a strong season. A strong season is the best type of recruiting tool. Crossing fingers.
