All Things 2014 Basketball Recruiting Thread

I really have no interest in adding another wing that is under 6'5. I'd rather bank the scholarship than commit it to this guy for 2 or 3 years.

We already have 4 scholarships next year before anything like transfers or whatever(otto this year). Using it on a player like this for a few years helps to adjust the scholarships around so we don't have 6 new players in a year if we can help it. It just depends on what Richard wants. I trust him on this one.

Will be interested to see what we target now with the addition of the C/PF. Haven't heard much of anything regarding Obepka since he decided to transfer but I still think he would be a good fit and then probably target a SF, wouldn't mind Ryan Johnson as I think his size and shooting ability could be an asset.

He's taking his ACT tomorrow, not sure if he's still a target though after getting Gaston.

Yeah, why would he want to come in and sit behind a first team all big 10 freshman 20yr old man child Badger eating freak from Senegal????

Lets remember Richards last name, they LOVE hoarding big dudes. Lets go get Konote.

What about Marial Shayok?

Marcus posted yesterday I think that we were looking at this guy in the past

Marial Shayok granted release; what it means for Marquette
"According to Blair Academy head coach Joe Mantegna, Shayok holds offers from Indiana, Marquette, Rutgers, Virginia and Michigan. It’s unknown whether he’ll still consider Marquette, but it wouldn’t be surprising to see him go elsewhere after Williams and the coaching staff departed last month.

It’s also not all that surprising that Shayok asked for and was granted his release. He was recruited by Buzz Williams and, more significantly, assistant Jamie McNeilly, who coached Shayok on Canada’s national team.

Marial Shayok And A Very Stupid Mistake
"PDATE (10:30 am): According to Evan Daniels of Scout.com, Marial Shayok has received a release from his letter of intent. Daniels phrases it as "just received" as of 9:49 am this morning, which makes things still slightly interesting regarding the timing of what's detailed in the post below. Marquette University has still not announced Shayok's release as of this update."

I have to think we're interested, especially with the Piper situation. I'm assuming we're still looking to add another wing and Shayok is probably one of the best available.

per Sid:

Future U basketball players

The Gophers men’s basketball team has three signees for next season in 6-8 forward Josh Martin, 5-11 guard Nate Mason and 6-4 guard Carlos Morris.

Martin, who plays for Bothell High School in Washington, was named the King County Class 4A Player of the Year by the Seattle Times and was also named Associated Press first-team all-state after averaging 27.2 points per game. He also had offers from California, Florida State, Gonzaga, Oklahoma State, UCLA, Washington and Washington State.

Mason attended Arlington Country Day in Jacksonville, Fla., splitting time between point guard and shooting guard and averaging 16.8 points per game. He took three official visits, to the Gophers, Kansas State and Virginia, and also had offers from such schools as Creighton, Harvard, Memphis and Southern Methodist.

Morris is a junior college transfer from Chipola College in Marianna, Fla., who averaged 14.7 points and 5.2 rebounds per game. Chipola made it to the National Junior College Championships before losing to Jones County. Morris also had offers from Alabama-Birmingham, Arkansas and DePaul.

Go Gophers!!

So are we still after Abdoulaye Gueye now that we have Gaston Diedhiou?

Was Gaston our second choice between the two? (an ugly step sister?) (or Cinderella?)

Marial Shayok shows up on ESPN as considering Minnesota...

According to 247 guys we haven't been recruiting Gueye that hard and he's never been that high of a priority. This was said shortly after he visited here. I'm guessing Gaston was a higher priority and we probably aren't even talking to Gueye anymore.

Sounds good; any word on Bakary Konate? I think he was taking his ACT... If that is true when will he know if all is well?
Seems like our in coming class will be able to beat our existing players in 4 on 4 ... plus if we get Konate and Piper... Crazy good it would seem...

This would be a pretty tasty incoming class IMO:

C Bakary Konate (probable RS)
C/F Gaston Diedhiou
F Josh Martin
W Ricky Johnson
W Carlos Morris
G Nate Mason

We'd be adding great size and athleticism. We could also afford to RS Konate with Mo and EE being Seniors. Follow that up in 2015 with Alex, Jarvis and Trier and now we're really in business!

The more I see of the Gaston kid/young man the better I like the pick up. Matter of fact, I like it a lot. As someone not on the U payroll I would like to finish with Shayok and bank the last one if the right JUCO isn't out there. I don't think taking a walk on ala Dave Winfield would hurt the team. :)

Nice list. I would love to see what Pitino's dream list looks like!

Hah...right on, diehard. It would pretty cool to see the Coach's recruiting priority tree. My guess would've been Reid Travis. Damn it...still hurts my fingers to type that name. Great kid, though...hope he does good things.

Haven't heard anything new on Konate. Seems like the Piper ship has sailed, but who knows I guess.

May be I'm in the minority but I'd like to get that wing from Illinois State whose from Columbia Heights over Johnson. Nothing wrong with adding a transfer that has an assassin's mentality with the ball, would also balance the classes. Sounds like he wants to come here and if the kid wants to be here than I think the desire to defend won't be that big of an issue. IMO defense is desire as much as it's skill

I like him and hope we can land him. He does lack some athleticism but I just love the way he can shoot the ball and he has some good size to go along with it. With the other scholarship I'd like to use it on one of two transfers SF Justin Martin from Xavier who I believe would be eligible right away or C/PF Chris Obepka from St.Johns who would have to sit out a year but I think both of these guys will draw considerable interest from a lot of schools.

Unimpressive list if suiters/offers.

So what? How many under the radar MN kids have an unimpressive list of offers, only then to have Gophers fans wishing they would have offered them 4 years later when they are playing in the NCAA tournament with a different school?

I don't want Johnson, go after a transfer instead, better options out there and even if they have to sit out a year it will help balance out class sizes

If he's a legit shooter, I'll take him. There is a spot on this team for a 6'6 shooter.

How about the list of mn guys who we don't offer and turns out they really werent good enough for the B1G, guarantee that list is bigger, and a lot of those guys are rated higher than the guys that surprise people. Number 1 rated kid in mn in 2010 was some kid from Columbia heights, never got offered and is doing nothing in college, yet people complain about Jett. Hindsight is 20/20, bet there are going to be mn players we should have offered from this class, but no one is vouching for any of them now, but when they break out there are going to be complainers

I also don't care for this kid... There are better options for us out there through the JUCO/transfer/HS route. There's a reason his best offer is UNC-Asheville. Lets not take recruits just to take them. If we don't find guys we feel can make an impact here, there's nothing wrong with banking a scholly for 2015.
