New Commit: Berkley Edwards

Lucas Trickle ‏@LucasTrickleGI
@JoshHelmholdt just told me that Berkley Edwards has committed to Minnesota. #Gophers

Of course he is the younger brother of Braylon Edwards:

"I don't understand how my brother has the 8th (fastest) time in the country in the 60m, ran for 1800 yards last year and 20 and UofM wontcall," Edwards tweeted around 8 p.m.

"Love my school and I played for coach (Hoke) but call my brother before its too late and you guys miss out like Lloyd would have ifnot forsoup," Braylon Edwards tweeted.

Go Gophers!!

Writing has been on the wall since Iowa pulled out and Cal fired Tedford. Nice commit nonetheless. He could certainly find a niche early with two sluggers starting at runningback.

Great commitment! Gonna regret this one Hoke. Love it!!

This is the type of all-around back we've been looking for. Quick, decent size (He'll need bulk up a little bit to become an every down back). I hope he can come in and contribute right away. He would make our run game much better quickly.

Nice. Hopefully he turns out like big brother. But with Braylon tweeting like he has, I'm hoping that doesn't mean Meatchicken starts recruiting him hard..

Tweets just now from Braylon:

"Congrats toy little brother @_YoungSuperstar verbally committing to the University of Minnesota. A very athletically and academically

"Respected university. I still don't understand how my father and I were all-Americans at Michigan but they don't give Berk a shot."

Go Gophers!!

Berkley, welcome! You'll enjoy MN. We look forward to you wearing the maroon & gold and helping us to take back the lil' brown jug!!!

Ski-U-Mah and Go Gophers!

More Braylon Edwards tweets:

"Oh well Minnesota just got one hell of a talent and hard worker, don't be surprised if he tears the maze and blue a new a$$hole soon."

"Don't take my tweets the wrong way Michigan fans and alums I'm still a proud supporter and love Michigan. Just saying my brother is a beast"

Go Gophers!!

Why did Iowa pull out?

I'm happy for the Edwards family that they're finally getting on the right side of Minnesota-Michigan. Congratulations Berkley!

Kill going with the chip on the shoulder angle. I like. Gets to face his home state schools each year. We need a pure shifty back. Mayes payed QB in HS and is playing more WR. Only November though. #13 player in MI.

What is very impressive is how Berkley is always moving his legs even after taking multiple hits. So many backs stop running after being hit especially at the line of scrimmage. This guy keeps moving all the time. I'm excited about this commit!

This is great pick-up for us! Congrats to the staff, they targeted him early and made it known he was their #1 RB option.

Yeah, basically that. Kirk Ferentz still recruits like it's 1960. Sometimes it works, but on the whole I think it's foolish.

Approximately how many scholarships do we have left to offer this class?

Hope he stays true to his word, maybe Hoke offers him on Signing Day and he has a change of heart and wants to play for the school his brother and dad played for. I hope that's not the case, but you never know when you are dealing with 18 year olds. Great pick up though, hopefully this starts a trend of a couple of verbals in a row in the next couple of weeks. Andrews....Walton....Shortridge

Hard to say without advanced knowledge of who is coming back and what the scholarship situation is for walk-ons.

There are currently 10 commits for this class. There are 12 guys who are known to have graduated who held scholarships (11 seniors + Kenny Watkins).

If you read that literally, that would leave only 2 scholarships available, and one of them is going to transfer Brian Bobek.

That said, there are almost certain to be a handful scholarships available, and there were also some walkons who got some last-minute scholarships that likely won't see them renewed.

I heard Kill said over a month ago that he expected about 14-15 guys. I'd guess the number will probably be a bit closer to 16-17, especially with the rash of offers they've been handing out lately.
