I think we finish 3rd in the Big Ten and get a 4 seed. He's that good.

Woodside might not have gotten the opportunities with the Gophers that he got with the Bison. And Monson wouldn't necessarily have known what to do with him or developed him the way Miles and Phillips did. Guys like Woodside and Ryan Wittman might not have gotten much more chance at a place like Michigan State, for example, than Dahlman got there. In college BB, sadly, the cream doesn't always rise to the top. That's why college selection is so important for these high school seniors. Woodside made the right choice for him.

I remember thinking that Tucker had a chance to be the next Bobby Jackson.

I see your point, but don't necessarily agree. I'll use Dusty Rychart to support my case. I blame Dahlman's flop on him not developing physically beyond where he was in HS and his dominance occurred against small schools. Izzo made a projection on how he'd develop as a player in an elite program while getting bigger, faster, and stronger with a strength program.

Wrong

Didn't play against: Lucas, Frazier, Battle, Hughes, et al every night in the Summit League. Not ripping on the kid, but let's not get crazy. That winner vs. Oakland - he may not even have gotten a shot off.

Woodside....

I may be wrong but i think Woodside red shirted as a freshman, believe i read it somewhere?? I really doubt if he came here he would have red shirted, but maybe. My point? Yes, with him this year we are a better team. But because he probably would not have redshirted here (only redshirted because they new they would be elgible for the "Big Dance" in his 5th year), it makes my speculation worthless i guess. I to thought Rico Tucker was going to be someone special...oh well.......

Woodside Can Play

I've watched Ben play against very good teams and excel. When NDSU beat Wisconsin a couple years back, he was the best player on the floor. Whenever he plays against great competition (Marquette, Wisconsin, etc.) he plays up to their level. He is very good floor general, something we really needed this year, and he deceptively quick. Make no mistake about, this kid can ball.

Rico was going to be a top-flight player before that thyroid disease laid him low. He just never came back from that.

Earlier this year I re-watched a partly taped over video from early in his freshman season where Rico, along with Vince Grier, dominated the last 15 minutes of a comeback non-conference victory.

Rico was a great athlete. He just couln't 'finish' his shots. Maybe it WAS because of his thyroid problem, we'll never know. Good point MikeS.....

2nd Round NBA Pick

Woodside will possibly be picked in mid/late second round. Not saying he'll make a roster, but I'll it wouldn't surprise me.

Rico Tucker had the worst ball handling skills of a Big Ten PG that I have ever seen in my life. /thread.

better fit for mid major

I doubt woodside would get drafted. He is a very good player but he does not seem that quick for a high major point guard, let alone the nba. I know I will get hammered for saying this..but wouldn't adam boone have put up the same numbers at NDSU?

I agree Rouser. He may have had a nice game at WI, but playing in the Big Ten every day is much different. I am not sure things would be much different with him at the point.

If Woodside came here, he would have graduated last year.

He, along with the rest of the freshman class, redshirted their freshman year. If he came here, he would have played.

Unbelievable. The parochialism never ends. Woodside is a good/great player in a mid-major conference. Good for him. He is not All Big Ten caliber. Lucas, Battle, Frasier, et al would eat him alive through the 2+ months of conference ball.

And now he'll be DRAFTED?!?!? My farking lord. It's just too much.

Woodside drafted? C'mon. I know the second round of the NBA is a total joke but you just made it pathetic. If Woodside gets drafted the NBA should just do away with a second round.
Thanks for the laugh though.
If Woody goes Second Round would that make Nolan and Joseph First Round selections?

What Do You Think of Woodside Now?

Is a 2nd round pick in NBA really that far fetched? I think not.

As has been pointed out, Woodside would of graduated already had he been a Gopher so he would of had no impact on this years team.

Woodside could not defend Collins but Collins had no clue how to stop him. He would of done just fine in the Big Ten. He has been invited to Portsmith camp so he is at least on the draft radar.

Woodside's stock just went up a lot with this game, but I'm not too sure if he will get drafted. I would like him to since he is from MN, but a lot of teams won't even give him a look. 37 points vs. Kansas is no small feat, however. Wish the Goph's would have got him here, would have liked to see him play for us.

Hey the Wolves......

have 3 first rd. picks (maybe 4) and 2 seconds. They should take this kid and at least get him to the developmental league as their player. He is lacking on D, but he knows spacing, and he makes good decisions with the ball.

He has the offensive skills to play in the league. Period.

Knew he could shoot, didn't know he was that quick. Missed out on that one. What point guard in the last ten years was better. I can't think of one.

Hes a solid player, saying he is good enough to play in the league is a different story. Defense was a liability against Collins, which is why they switched him after getting burned early. SE MN has been over-looked for many years by every college team besides Winona St.

The guy was incredible, we would have been a 5 seed at least in the tournament with him. Get over yourself if you think he would have struggled in the Big Ten. He just put up 37 on Kansas on the big stage, with a target on his back the entire game. He was their only weapon, KU's entire plan was to stop him and he still played brilliantly.

One good season and half of our fans are turning into smug a-holes. We have nothing to be smug about.

Where do these idiots come from?

I don't see the need to play 'what if he was a Gopher' with all of these guys. Woodside for various reasons wasn't highly recruited in HS. That's not all Dan Monson's fault and it's not Woodside's. Congrats to him on a great career. He's not the first MN kid that will end up at a smaller school who could have helped the Gophers and he won't be the last. Flowers at Winona comes to mind.

Exactly. So what did Bill Self say about Woodside? CBS Sports reported, "Woodside's 37 points led Self to declare him the best guard his team faced this season." Wow! That is saying quite a bit considering how many outstanding PGs there are in the Big 12. :D

Woodside was last in line to exchange handshakes with Kansas. Everyone spoke to him and Collins caught him in a bear hug. As What Up said - everyone knew he was the key guy to stop and yet he managed 37 pt and NO fouls. He had one late that was intentioned, so basically played flawlessly. And how many minutes did he play? I imagine he was out at times but I can't remember ever thinking he was out of the game. EDIT: Checked - 40 minutes.
What impressed me yesterday was his recognition. He'd spot the slightest seam and exploit it.
