I'm sure a few of us are sitting around watching the prep bowl.

I love watching the 9man games, there isn't often any ramifications of potential Gophers or anything like that, but the football newb in me likes this level.

That said, the 9 man QB for Edgerton/Ellsworth is pretty impressive. He seems like a D3 kid, pretty good arm. Anyone know if he is playing somewhere next year?

Did you watch the 9-man championship last year. The guy from Undwerwood I think just tore it up.

I didn't. I remember watching it a couple years ago when there was a kid from Cromwell that looked like the fastest kid in the state. He was like a running QB. That might be who you are talking about as I think Cromwell was playing Underwood that year...

Bob, you seem to be the best informed poster here about Minnesota High School football. What players have you identified in-state next year who could be worthy of Gopher offers?

Yes Cromwell! I think I had watched Underwood the game before while waiting for my game to start and got confused. Either way, Underwood's QB was quite the athlete as well.

I'm a metro guy, so the only people I know a lot about are the bigger school kids. I knew some of the 4A athletes, but I don't know much about Bemidji or Ricori.

So I just know the basic stuff...
Andrew Larson - RB - Eden Praire: He is one of the best RBs in the state. He is legitimately fast, was timed at some combine in Chicago last year in the 4.6's (electronically timed that is FAST). He runs hard. The Gopher coaches are supposedly talking to him, and it sounds like it might come down to either him or Ford (Wayzata RB). Another poster on here (Rosemountain), knows quite a bit about HS football and has seen him more than me, and he doesn't think he is a Big 10 caliber RB.
Ford - Wayzata - RB: Either him or Larson are likely to get an offer from the U. Ford is more of a bruising back, runs hard, REALLY strong, kind of short and compact. He is in a similar position to Larson. He'll be going to school for free next year somewhere, he is a talented guy.
Nick Davidson - Eden Praire - OL: He is injured, so he won't be playing. He is probably the most heavily recruited player in the state, but he broke his leg.
Drake Michaelson - LB - Eden Praire: I think there is a real good chance he ends up with an offer. He is smallish but kind of in the James Laurinitus mode (always making big plays). He has offers from Wyoming, Air Force and a couple MAC schools. If he can add 25 lbs and retain his athleticism, he'll be a really good LB.

Anyone know if the games (5A in particular) are on the radion (not internet)? Thanks.

Sorry, I was unclear. Have you identified any JUNIORS as being worthy of scholarship offers next year? Not even necessarily in the Prep Bowl, but in general.

Oh my fault, yeah, there are some good juniors in this game tonight as well. I'm not sure how it will all unfold with these players as far as if they are Big 10 caliber. But here is the kids who come to mind:

Tyson Reinke - DT - EP-He is a really impressive football player. Pretty athletic for being over 250, he's tall, plays some fullback in short yardage, plays a little bit of offense, but I think his future is at DT. He'll be one of the better players on the field tonight.

Mitch Underhill - RB - WayzataHe won't be playing because he tore his ACL early in the season but he is an impressive kid. He is small but a really good runner. He was awesome as a sophomore and went for like 240 yards in the Prep Bowl last year (as a Soph). Wayzata has a more speed kid named Roti and Ford as their workhorses, but Underhill might have been their true #1. Unfortunately, he won't be playing but he is a name to keep an eye out for.

Chris Wipson - LB - WayzataI've seen him play a couple times and he is going to be really good. I think he's already over 200 lbs, tough, one of the better players in this entire game. He's a kid that I think we will all be following as a recruit.

Chandler Wright - OL - WayzataHe is GOOD. He really stands out and kind of plays like Tommy Olson did in HS (with a mean streak and dominating). He is from Louisiana and I don't know his story of how he got here, but he is REALLY good. I'd have to think he is a D1 player. I hope he's liked MN so far, if not he might be more of a MN player who really isn't a instate recruit (ala Nick Davidson). But he's a kid to watch out for.

Jack Cottrell - LB - EPHe is also a really good player. He's fast and a good tackler. He could certainly end up a BCS quality recruit.

I've only seen these guys play a few times over the past couple of years. I know more about the east metro than the west metro. I grew up in Saint Paul. But these are the juniors who definitely stand out. Some of the other posters are more familiar with the Lake Conference than I am, so they might know more...

so far, Edgerton & Dawson boyd has won titles, southeast minnesota is blowin up!

In general....

Michael Flowers - DT - Humboldt
- I haven't seen him play this season but I think he is considered one of the better recruits in the state. He's kind of a freak DT. He's like 6'5" 270 and REALLY athletic.

Keelon Brookins - WR/CB - Tartan
-He's FAST. He'll probably be the most highly recruited kid in the state. I read somewhere (looking for it) that he was at the Nike Camp and ran a sub 4.6 electronically timed 40, which is blazing fast. If he chooses the U, we'll have to outrecruit the big dogs for him. He's explosive, fast and just an extremely impressive athlete. He has some youtube highlights out there.

James Onwualu - RB - Cretin
-I think his skills translate much better at the next level than Kendrick Brewster. Kendrick is a great kid and will make an FCS or MAC school very happy, but I think James might be a better prospect. He has the potential to carry more weight. I'd expect him to play next season at 6'1" 200-205 lbs and he's fast and smart.

Steve Schindler - LB - Hutch
-He's supposedly the real deal at LB as well. I've never seen him play.

Khammarath - WR - Humboldt
-I've only seen him play once and he was a freshman at Simley. He is really elusive and definitely a play maker. I'm definitely going to go to a Humboldt game next year to see him and Flowers play. Supposedly he's really impressive.

There is a kid named Warren (I can't remember much about him) who is a DT at Providence Academy, and i've heard he is really good. I don't know anything about him, but some fellow high school football newbs I know seem to be impressed with him.

Onowalu was fantastic when I saw him play. Versitile. Obviously I have a small sample size though. Could play slot or RB.

Big schools tonight. I thought EP to start the year. I know Wayzata has looked better but I'll stick with Ep. They seem to have finally found their offense. I don't think Wayzata can shut them out again.

Edgerton and Dawson are in SW MN.

Caledonia looks real impressive, in winning the 2A though, and they are from SE MN.

The head coach at Caledonia is Carl Fruechte, the father of incoming Gopher WR Isaac Fruechte.

Yeah, he's a really good football player. He is one of those guys where everything seems like it's in slow motion for him, he kind of glides around and he is just a really good football player. He could definitely play RB or WR, or even DB. He has great hands, he's a good blocker, really smart (brother plays at Penn).

It's nice to see a couple of players at Humboldt. Usually talented Westsiders end up at Cretin or open enroll at Sibley, SSP, or Simley.

Yep, it's good for the school. Hopefully, they both get scholarships and have good careers and they can show some of the younger guys that you don't have to transfer out to accomplish their goals.

Just based on the eyeball test, Larson looks awfully small for a Big Ten runningback prospect. Needs to add a lot of bulk to be a serious prospect.

Granted, I've seen a total of 15 minutes of both of them, but Ford looks more the part.

Thanks for the list. Haven't heard any about 2013 recruiting.

Yeah, Ford looks more the part than Larson to me. It's kind of hard to tell because both D's are so good, but they both run hard.

Larson has looked very underwhelming so far. No way that kid's a D1 RB.

I think Larson is a D1 RB, I just don't think he is a Big 10 caliber RB.

The Edgerton QB looked a lot better than the Eden Prairie QB.

I was impressed with the Edgerton QB as well, but it's hard to compare him to a kid at Eden Praire. Wayzata's defense is better than most D3 colleges. He doesn't look great, but this is a whole different ball game than 9man football.

You know it's a good game when everyone on offense is basically neutralized (to this point, mid-4th).

Hard to tell on the two RBs. Only thing I can tell is Ford is the stronger of the two.

Minnesota HS football is just so bad. Championship game and it's 6-3 in the 4th quarter. The offenses look so vanilla and slow developing. Wayzata had the ball just before halftime and completed a pass to midfield. Instead of using their last TO with about 8 seconds left and maybe throwing a hail mary, they just let the clock run out.

Is there a single D-I player on the field?

Watch the tape of the semifinals then. 49-7 EP and 42-0 Wayzata, plenty of offense for your great football mind to comprehend.
