Future Gopher Coach Discussion

Good question. Too lazy to look it up... who was all included that class? Seems like a long time ago. I have to admit I don't know much about Larson other than the little I have leaned in the last few days. Someone raved to me yesterday about his the "blue collar" mentality.
Perunovich (Hobey Baker)
Samberg
Mikey Anderson
Matt Anderson
Louis Roehl

Back to back titles as freshmen and sophomores.

Since we're getting to the acceptance stage of grief...

Does anyone have an idea how much of a role Larson played in recruiting the 2017 incoming class of D at UMD, likely the best single D recruiting class ever?

Also he's been recruiting CHL like crazy and I imagine Coyle saw that as a good thing without checking if the players he got were any good.
I would imagine Coyle is going almost exclusively by what he is being told without any real inside knowledge.

TBH, there just isn't really a way for them to have any idea if these guys are good, the players are good, etc. unless that is the sport they are most passionate about and watch (we know that is not the case for Coyle).

If you want to get into the weeds, he was there 08-11 so there for the first title after helping recruit for 2 years and then they went back into the doldrums for a hot minute. came back in 15-18 where they rapidly swung back up again and had their best ever run.

@Crosby that's the Mikey Anderson (LAK), Perunovich, Samberg (WPG) class. My favorite part of college hockey is the guy that's the best in college will play the least NHL games among them

My wife who couldn't care less said, "As long as the new coach isn't also bald/balding from all the stress."

Motzko, Miller, Gordon
Larson 😬

Are you spinning something negative into a positive? Are you feeling OK? (JK)

Don Lucia was only 41 when he started at the U. Larson will be 54 at the start of next season. Some people can rightfully point at that if we are trying to find the next long term coach of the program.

I'd rather have an NCHC head coach than Potulny or Cashman. I'm grasping at straws here.
He took over a winner and it got progressively worse during his tenure. Not exactly what you want to see…regardless of conference.

Hmmm... Yeah. A little better than our D-Men this year. :)

Russo reports that Coyle interviewed one mystery college coach this weekend. Who the hell could that be?
Really poorly written tweet. Confusing. But hey, maybe it's Ben Barr if we're going to throw out weird things like "mystery college coach".

I like Russo. He writes well. Yet there used to be a time when reporters would be pursuing “who” the mystery candidate was. Now it’s hyperbole for clicks. Reporters should want to be the first to identify the mystery candidate. Instead they stay quiet to preserve relationships.

True dat. The amazing thing is they were all kids, not 20 or 21 year old freshman. Think all but 1 stepped right in from high school.

miss those days when that was what was more the norm in college hockey
I think I saw a stat that this year's freshman class on average was about 6 months older than last years. Not cool.

Call me crazy, but I still think Raboin will be the hire.

supposedly McMahon (CHN) saying Coyle talking to 2 new college coaches now.

Either feedback has gotten back or the interviews went poorly. Until the names all leak, hard to say what to make of it but better diligence.

If Coyle decides its Larson vs Potulny after he sees all the options, fine. The prior hastiness and rushing to the interview stage (particularly over zoom) was good reason for concern from fans.

Thank God Coyle is taking a step back and doing his job. I hope it’s not just to save face.
Taking a step back? C'mon you guys. Give the guy at least some benefit of the doubt here. I'm sure he had planned on doing this, and is not scheduling interviews all of the sudden because he is reading all the comments on GopherHole.

Everything reported and comments from alumni definitely indicate he is taking a step back from his original plan. Still think he’s just going to name Larson.

Highly, highly doubt that this was a departure from his original plan. But yes... no matter what I agree with you. If there is a full interview process, with 4 or more candidates, and then he feels like Larson or Potulny is the best one, then I'll feel a bit better about either one of them.

His original plan may have blown up a bit if Raboin said no. Either way I don’t really care as long as he is talking to additional candidates.
