Future Gopher Coach Discussion

They both have done a lot with what they were given and in a short period of time. I don’t think you can realistically look at the D3 level and really say that’s a viable option for a program like ours, huge difference in what it takes to manage this program. I honestly haven’t looked at or considered D1 assistants simply because I think we should have better proven HC options.
I understand the potential challenges with D3 HCs. My point with great assistant coaches is they very well could be better than the current potentially available proven HC options. The two I commented on are .500 as HCs. To me, grabbing a top assistant at a current high end program seems pretty appealing.

Louie just mentioned on KFAN that we will hear soon who will be the new coach. He implied that he sat in on the interviews or discussions.

Augustana has only been a program for 3 years. Raboin built it from the ground up and made them competitive in 2 years, and they almost made the NCAA tournament this year. Thats very impressive. Dartmouth hasn’t been to the NCAA tournament in 45 years. Cashman took over 5 years ago and he now has them ranked #7 in the country, in the NCAA tournament, and set a program record for wins in a season. Again very impressive and hard to do. You need to look beyond just their record and evaluate what they have accomplished in situations and locations where it’s very hard to win like they have. Or you could take a bigger chance on an assistant that has no record or accomplishments as a HC and they just might turn out to be the next Herb Brooks. Plus Cashman and Raboin aren’t the only current HC options out there.

The entertainment value is way too high.

Can’t pass this up.
It’s been the best entertainment for like three days now. Melt downs by several individuals has been worth the price of admission, which is free by the way!

Based on what? There is nothing Hastings has accomplished that Bob has not.
Hastings is still employed. We’ll see what the future holds for both. Right now Hastings gs has a much better chance to be successful. I thought what he did at Mankato was more impressive than what Motzko did at SCSU.

I've seen a few names included here so figured I'd post the experience of those shared.
  • Nate Leaman, 418-301-102, 2 Conference Titles, 8 NCAA Tournaments, 2 Frozen Fours, 1 NCAA Title - 22 Seasons, Union and Providence
  • Steve Rollick, 221-177-45, 1 Conference Title, 5 NCAA Tournaments, 1 Frozen Four - 12 Seasons, Ohio State
  • Brett Larson, 137-97-22, 1 Conference Title, 1 Conference Tournament Title, 6 NCAA Tournaments, 1 Frozen Four, 1 NCAA Runner-Up - 7 Seasons, St. Cloud State
  • Grant Potulny, 128-113-17, 0 Conference Titles, 0 NCAA Tournaments - 7 Seasons, Northern Michigan
  • Pat Ferschweiler, 104-50-4, 1 Conference Title, 1 Conference Tournament Title, 4 NCAA Tournaments, 1 Frozen Four, 1 NCAA Title - 4 Seasons, Western Michigan
  • Ben Barr, 68-58-17, 1 Conference Title, 2 NCAA Tournaments - 4 Seasons, Maine
  • Reid Cashman, 43-19-12, 0 Conference Titles, 0 NCAA Tournaments - 4 Seasons, Dartmouth
  • Garrett Raboin, 30-31-8, 0 Conference Titles, 0 NCAA Tournaments - 2 Seasons, Augustana
For comparison, here's what the resume for Motzko and Lucia looked like before they were hired.
  • Don Lucia, 286-175-39, 4 Conference Titles, 1 Conference Tournament Title, 5 NCAA Tournaments, 2 Frozen Fours, 1 NCAA Runner-Up - 12 Seasons, Alaska Fairbanks and Colorado College
  • Bob Motzko, 276-192-49, 3 Conference Titles, 1 Conference Tournament Title, 8 NCAA
  • Tournaments, 1 Frozen Four - 13 Seasons, St. Cloud State
Last I checked, Reid Cashman’s team is in the NCAA tournament.

Sounds to me like Lou Nanne is probably the biggest problem with this program. Isn’t he the one who pushed for Motzko?

Now seeing we’re holding a media availability day today, which would probably mean Larson is our coach. Damn, I thought there was a chance we’d make it to the weekend and wait for some people’s seasons to end.

On channel 5 sports Sunday night, Doogie stated that our opening may not be as attractive as it once was years ago. He said we may be only the 5th best job in BIG hockey (behind MI, MI State, PState, WI).

Have we sunk that low?

Lol no, that’s crazy recency bias based off of one season. They’re all top notch jobs now, but it’s Minnesota and Michigan at the top.

Hopefully you're right. Cause it's only recency bias, until it isn't.

Doogie is a chattering idiot who delights in assuring Gopher fans how shitty their programs are and why no one wants to be a part of them.

If we hire Larson today they damn well better announce we’re getting a GM too. Give the fans something to be excited about.

Larson by year (Full Seasons)
2019 - 30 Wins, 1st round NCAA Loss
2021 - 20 Wins, NCAA Runner-Up
2022 - 18 Wins, 1st round NCAA Loss
2023 - 25 Wins, 2nd Round NCAA Loss
2024 - 17 Wins, Missed NCAA Tournament
2025 - 14 Wins, Missed NCAA Tournament
2026 - 16 Wins, Missed NCAA Tournament

Just announced by channel 9 Jim Rich

Larson named new head coach

Coyle logic: fans don’t sound happy with who I picked two days into the search. What do I do? Throw out to the media that I’m contacting better coaches who are in the tournament and widening the search, then wait one more day to hire the easiest guy that I was going to, whose missed 3 tournaments in a row. Masterclass!

Was not thrilled with the Motzko hire when he came, thought that it was a lazy pick. This one screams even lazier to me. A severe lack of energy and certainly a lack of imagination on Coyle's part if we settle for Larson so soon.
We get rid of Bob because we "expect" high standards and lots of winning from our coaches and then we go out and get a guy who has failed to get into the NCAAs the last three years.
I guess that I will not be getting the season tickets back this year, I will wait and see and jump in next year with everyone else if things turn around!

Certainly not an encouraging trend line with Larsons results. I would have a hard time getting to excited about the hire if he’s the guy.
