Future Gopher Coach Discussion

Probably won’t find out exactly why Raboin would turn it down. Maybe he just likes Sioux Falls enough and wants to be known for building an entire program up. Regardless it also probably means we did not try very hard to get him.

At this point it’s just hoping for a miracle that the search flips and we bring in candidates that should’ve been there at the start. Otherwise I fear someone’s going to be named in the next two days.

No offense to them but if he consulted Lou Nanne and Pat M and more people like that... I can see why we're getting this

I would love to know his reasoning for turning it down. On the surface it sounds crazy.
Take it for what it's worth, but there is a rumor in town that Denver is his dream job.

One thing Bob did so well was bring back alumni into the mix and getting them into it again. Many alum are involved, but to what extent is the question. If they are the ones consulting to hire Brett Larson then maybe we should stop including them in everything lol. I don’t think that’s the case though.

Shocked Bonin wanted Bob gone and now is complaining about the search and who will take over. Actually, I bet deep down he is enjoying this mess.

I honestly think Larson could excel here. He’s not half as bad a candidate as people here think. He wasn’t even on my radar initially but it wouldn’t be a bad hire.

Anyone could do good here. Once they name him we’ll have to convince ourselves that he could be okay. But that doesn’t make it acceptable. We shouldn’t have to pray the coach turns his career around here, it should be expected that the next coach has full ability to bring us a natty.

Fair.

This reach out to Lou Nanne and Pat M is concerning, that stuff is what doomed the Whalen and Ben Johnson hires. Hire highly successful, currently employed coaches who are currently a step below the U.

Well the same source who told me Bob was getting fired confirmed along with a couple alumni that it has just been the three finalists. Something would have to drastically change in the next day for us to start actually reaching out nationally. Everything is going exactly how the reports say.

It’s time to start realizing Coyle does not care or know anything about hockey.
That’s your opinion and some guy you know. Until they announce you or anyone else doesn’t know jack!

It’s not like there’s only one person who knows what’s going on. There are alumni and other sources in the know and/or involved. These people talk. I wouldn’t just make shit up and put it out there, and I know this person is well connected. What’s the benefit of anyone making this up? If bullshit like this is happening, I’m going to call it out. Additionally, go look at what any college hockey insider is reporting about it, they’ll say the same thing.

Obviously it’s not set in stone yet, and hopefully things change. But it’s not an acceptable way to run a search right now.

As pissed as I am that Coyle has turned this into a turd fest I hope he takes his time, waits till all of the candidates are available and then make a decision. I just find it hard to believe that these two are the best qualified and interested candidates. If Coyle puts together an attractive package (start with Motzko's $750K salary and go up from there) I think the Gophers can attract a deeper talent pool than two.

Don’t get me wrong, I personally like Raboin and think he would be right around or at the top of the list for me. But only contacting him and the other two middling coaches is ridiculous and puzzling.

Maybe I’m being too harsh on Larson and you can point to the championship game he made it to, but that was still pretty much Motzko’s recruiting that did that. After his recruits left, they got worse and worse.

Potulny has never been head coach of a good team.
This^^^^. I refuse to believe those 2 are the finalists. If so, Gopher hockey is officially irrelevant.

He i

Western Michigan coach is on my short list. Major upgrade for him.

Denver coach would get automatic recruits, sell tickets and bring championships. I think it’s in his best option to make the move. Be a huge plus for his resume. Great stepping stone to coach NHL team someday.

What about Dave Hakstol UND’s old coach? ( hard to say)

Can we get Hastings?
Hastings is who Coyle should have hired instead of Motzko.

The highest homicide rate in Minneapolis in the last 6 years was 22.4 per 100,000 residents in 2021. In Montgomery, AL it was 42 per 100,000. In Birmingham, AL it was 65.7. All have dropped since with Minneapolis much lower than the other two by about half.

What's your point?
😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂 ha ha ha, those pesky facts.

College hockey gets so tied into an alum coaching, or someone from the coaching tree. Maybe they called the wrong number at WMU and should have called Jason Herter; what about NTDP staff, Nate Leaman, Seth Appert, Rohlik, Barr, Jack Capuano, the list is endless. Instead we get Potulny or Larson on Tuesday.

Potulny has zero players he can bring. Larson at least has some kids that are decent at hockey. Not a deciding factor but another reason I put Potulny at F and Larson at D.

For me Barr would be an A but for most others A-/B+
For me Raboin would be an A-

The gap is bad...
What are your thoughts on Reid Cashman?

What are your thoughts on Reid Cashman?
He has done a terrific job with a program that was in the toilet and now has them in the top 10. It’s not easy to win at Dartmouth. Probably could do great things with the resources MN has. A top 5 choice in my opinion.

Agreed. What’s better about Barr compared to Cashman? Cashman has a better resume.

I think Cashman has demonstrated the ability to get more with less than Barr..that’s good coaching. Barr has done a good job with Maine but this season and his NCAA tournament results drop him in my opinion. Given a choice today I would take Cashman.

Or what about going into Manitoba and looking at Dwight Hirst, who has MN kids on his team, and took them to record 50 game season and stellar couple years there. Young and motivated! Need to look outside the box sometimes too.

Since we're getting to the acceptance stage of grief...

Does anyone have an idea how much of a role Larson played in recruiting the 2017 incoming class of D at UMD, likely the best single D recruiting class ever?

Also he's been recruiting CHL like crazy and I imagine Coyle saw that as a good thing without checking if the players he got were any good.

Good question. Too lazy to look it up... who was all included that class? Seems like a long time ago. I have to admit I don't know much about Larson other than the little I have leaned in the last few days. Someone raved to me yesterday about his the "blue collar" mentality.
