Future Gopher Coach Discussion

Coyle doesn't have time to fire and then hire a hockey coach, does he? He's too busy prepping for his new gig as the Kentucky AD, right?

Source? You don't have to give names... Just a little more

I’ll just say someone who is usually in tune with whats going on with the program and frequently talks with alumni and those close to the program. I don’t know them personally but I’m taking their word for it. Could be good or bad news, but I would assume it’s good (for us at least)

that's rather intriguing though impressively vague haha. very interesting timing wise but i guess there's always the chance Coyle wants to announce Bob moving on and the new coach all together?

Lol gotta protect the guy especially if he ends up being wrong even though I trust it as of now.

Feel like the next coach would still take a week or so to announce. If you’re firing a guy like Motzko, I’d hope you intend on trying to make some big swings

He sold his house
They gave him the retirement tour WJC gig

Let's start the next chapter! Writing's been on the wall since last fall!

no for sure get why one would not say who it is and i would do the same

Realistically you need to have whoever it is decided by the last week in March so they have time to get here and meet with all the internal players as well as all the recruits currently signed or you're going to get rolled in the portal.

you're on the clock for the next 48 hous phil :D

Definitely need to be quick and calculated. If he is fired for all we know they’ve been searching for the past couple weeks already. I’m sure many players are waiting for this announcement to make a decision.

If nothing happens I probably owe you all a drink for getting your hopes up, we all might need it if that’s the case lol

I'm betting on one of two things: 1) Bob announcing his retirement, or 2) Bob being placed into a different role in the athletic dept (like they did with Doug Woog many years ago).

Could go either way on a new coach being announced at the same time. My guess is that won't happen immediately because public speculation, even for a week, would bring a positive attention to the program.

If Bob actually gets removed/steps down, who would be your personal top three (3) choices as the next coach?

Fair question. I've included a sense of realism here or my choice #3 would be higher. Yeah, I know #3 is not likely to come here. Also - most hockey guys know who these people are but I am spelling it out in case some don't follow it that closely.

1) Garrett Raboin, HC at Augustana. Has Gopher ties. Impressive track record. The right age. Would be his dream job. I think he would recruit aggressively. I'd love the northern MN angle too (he's from Detroit Lakes).

2) Pat Ferschweiler, HC at Western Michigan. Hard to argue with his WMU success. Love the way his teams compete (grit, structure, discipline). Seems to get the very most out of his talent. Recruits MN well. I think he would likely take the job, even though WMU is his alma mater.

3) David Carle, HC at Denver. Too obvious for need to elaborate. But I will. Great record. Two national titles. Right age. Good judge of talent. Some MN ties (at least if you count Shattuck). He would be too good to pass up if he would be interested. Don't think he's a realistic candidate though, given his DU background and he appears to be pretty settled in there. That said, the U of MN job is, or at least should be, the best job in college hockey. No candidate should be assumed to be off the table.

Buccigross of all people confirms Bob is gone.

Exciting times! Let the search begin!

I feel like they will start by making Ferschweiler say no (which he probably will) and then move on to Raboin Barr. I hope they take some swings that people weren’t expecting and maybe pull something out of their ass, but I’d be happy with either of those two as young ambitious coaches.

Ya, already 2 and 3 above aint gonna happen
The question was "who would you want?" Not... who do you think will take the job.

Also - the same attitude that you bash people for at the U is on display in your post. Why WOULDN'T you reach out to all of these guys? We need to recognize that we have what should be the best job in college hockey. Anybody would be damn lucky to have it. We need to be aggressive, unashamed of who we are, and really try to move the needle. You won't have this opportunity again for several years and you need to explore all options. Be aggressive, be bold and let's go get the next Herb Brooks.

Or we can just sit and whine about it...

you could've just said Bucci was your source :D

I suspect its Raboin, Barr, and Potulny as the ones who are most realistic and I would be fine with either of the first 2

Sioux Sports folks saying it's Raboin. I don't hate it. Not my number one but gonna give him his chance.

none of the bulk of them know any better than the rest of us. It's going to be probably the most popular realistic name

Think it's a pretty decent choice and would love it if they'd fork over some money to put someone in a GM role for him who's motivated and wants to do that job or has some recruiting sway as a name

Probably in the ballpark. But if we hire anyone other than Raboin, without first talking to Carle or Pat F, that would be unforgiveable. In other words, if Raboin is announced today or soon, then all is well. If Barr or Potulny are announced without a search where we contact the other two... that's settling.

No matter what, my buddy Bonin will be on here after the coach is announced saying "people actually thought that we had a good chance to get Carle" or something like that.

Let’s make this very clear: we are part of the few premier jobs in the nation. We sit on the best player hotbed in the country. There is untapped NIL potential that was reportedly misused in a concerning way. It is not absurd for us to ask about any coach. It’s not a conclusion that Fersch would say no, even though he’s at his Alma mater.

That being said, we can’t be afraid to take a swing on someone who we think can be the next great coach, even if they haven’t necessarily made a name for themselves quite yet.
