I'm sure its happened but I sure can't recall it. When has a coach left their successfil Division I alma mater for another D I school in basketball, hockey or football.

It can happen. Matt Campbell left Iowa State for Penn State. Lane Kiffin left Ole Miss for LSU. Lincoln Riley left Oklahoma for USC. Brian Kelly left Notre Dame for LSU.

key portion being alma mater my friend

Lol at thinking the U will ever be on the leading edge of salaries anymore
I find it hard to believe we can't pay more than Western Michigan but I have no idea what his current salary is. Ferschweiler is probably very happy there anyways. Inquiring would make sense but I'm not getting my hopes up.

I think it will be Barr or Raboin.

Well, probably doesn’t happen often but this would be a unique situation.

Rich Rodriguez left Alma mater West Virginia for Michigan after a lot of success (which actually didn’t turn out well lol)

Of course we can. Bob was making $750K..Pats making $420K.

Look no further than Bob Motzko. Left St. Cloud to join the Gophs.

I would suggest Dwight Hirst from Niverville Nighthawks in the Manitoba Junior Hockey League. Only 46 years old and seems to be an upcoming coach in the Canadian hockey leagues.

If it makes it past Friday my hope for Barr will come back

Norm Sloan in basketball and Johnny Majors in football, but that dates back to the 70’s.

SCSU at that time was an also ran when it came to the tournament.
Yes but he had some success there and the question was about D1 coaches leaving their alma mater to coach elsewhere. At the time he was looked at as a very successful coach. Left his alma mater. Not sure of your point.

Motkzo and Hastings lead the college level in salary. David Carle in an unknown in Denver, because they are a private institution.
Nightingale makes 1.3mil a year

they fuck with salary rankings because of salary and retention bonuses to make buyouts different.

The other one i thought of was Thad Matta left Butler for Xavier and later OSU.

"When has a coach left their successful Division I alma mater"

A title at WMU is very different than what Motzko had accomplished at SCSU

SCSU at that time was an also ran when it came to the tournament.

That's a bit disingenuous to state that without further context.

Bob Motzko had just finished a season in which his team was the number-one overall seed in the NCAA Tournament, was basically the best team in the country for the entire year, but yes, got upset in the opening round of the tourney.

So, sure, they didn't have tourney success, but the program was not an also-ran. And, Motzko was the clear choice to take over the Gophers at the time, and he proved to return the team to sellout crowds, re-engage the alums and student section, get to a couple of Frozen Fours, win some conference titles, etc.

Now it is someone else's turn.

Here’s a list from The Athletic:

Some possible names of candidates the Gophers could try to go after include St. Cloud State coach Brett Larson, and Western Michigan’s Pat Ferschweiler, who led the Broncos to a national title last season. There’s also Maine coach Ben Barr. You wonder if there might be interest in former Wild and Gopher forward Darby Hendrickson, whose son Beckett is on the team. Grant Potulny, the coach for the Rangers AHL affiliate Hartford, could also be in the mix, as might Garrett Raboin (Augustana University).

lolz mentioning Darby. If that's where we go with this, coyle deserves to be fired
Never been a head coach. doesn't coach at the college level

I wrote this up awhile ago. There will be a bunch of random names thrown around including some crazy no chance targets, they'll interview 3-4 guys (Rabs and Barr will be two of those). Larson would also be a pretty meh hire that is not going to excite the fanbase.

I agree with you. It is different.

I agree with you. It is different.
Is your point it’s unlikely or they shouldn’t even try? It would be AD malpractice for Coyle not to check into the possibility, and by check into I mean dangle a very lucrative carrot in front of him. He may pass but you have to take a shot at getting one of the best proven coaches.

If they haven't already given the job to Raboin, then yes they will contact him, Barr, and others.
