Van Ginkel being out most of September and October, then ramping up in November probably had more to do with the Vikings failing to make the Playoffs than anything. The Defense had like a 2 month turnover drought without him.
A healthy Wentz might could made enough difference as well.
Good point about Van Ginkel, and also Cashman.
Alec Lewis at The Athletic put out a great article this morning detailing a lot of the Vikings season, going back to the summer, and a lot of what went wrong. Most notably among what went wrong, pairing with JJM's injuries and that he was perhaps not as ready as some would have hoped:
- The OL additions of Fries and Kelly, that came with risk, did not translate. The Vikings had a league-leading 17 different O-Line combinations this season. Good Lord...
- The addition of Hargrave and J. Allen on the DL did not make the impact that the price tag would indicate. If not for the emergence of Jalen Redmond and even Levi Drake Rodriguez, things would have been worse.
- The injuries early to Van Ginkel and Cashman. Cashman was on a pace to set franchise records for tackles had he not missed time. Van Ginkel is just plain a force, his lost time was brutal
- Daniel Jones changing his mind to stay at the 11th hour and leaving them hanging, and then gambling on Sam Howell. I was one who thought Howell would/could be a MORE than capable backup. Major swing and miss.
And YES, to agree with you, Ope, a healthy Wentz most definitely could have easily translated into 1 or 2 more wins, which would have put them in the playoffs as well.
It will be an interesting offseason. The story also talks about some decisions coming with the coaching staff; not just on keeping Flores, but also many other position coaches who have expiring contracts.
