2025-26 College Football Coach Fired/Hired Thread

I’m hearing that Michigan is going to wait DeBoer out because he’s the guy they want, and are having back channel talks with his agent. If he loses to IU on Jan 1 they can introduce him on Jan 2 and he can start hammering the portal. Even if they keep advancing, Michigan’s willing to take a one year hit to play the long game so they can get their guy for the next decade-plus. Stay tuned.

Just looked quick and seems this guy doesn't have a single tie to the state of Michigan, other than having been OC/QB coach at Eastern for a couple years about 10 years ago.

Why this guy?

(Granted, I'm rooting for him to beat IU :) )

He took Washington to the national championship game. He can coach.

And who cares if he doesn't have ties to the state of Michigan. That feels like a Minnesota "not one of us" excuse. Did that help Sherrone Moore, or Brady Hoke, or Gary Moeller compete for national championships?

He had no ties to the south as far as I know so the Bama job seems more an outlier. from the Midwest and coached Midwest and west

Same reason Bama hired him.

Michigan State putting together a good staff with all that booster money.

The entire Athletic Department is currently being reviewed. This whole situation could be a massive dumpster fire for a little while.

What coach is going to take that job without knowing who their boss will be (I foresee a new AD soon)? What coach is going to walk into that with an interim University president who can't offer any assurances on what comes next? What coach is going to take that job without knowing what the ramifications on the program will be (I mean, besides the NCAA slapping them on the wrist and extending Harbaugh's exile from college football - because they still hate him)?

Whomever Michigan is targeting will be lined up for 2027, assuming they can clean up the mess before then. I believe Poggi will get the gig for a year - similar to how the U handled Claeys (although I expect Poggi will be clear on what the situation is, and it's likely Michigan's new AD will be able to communicate, have a spine, and handle the transition with class).

They have no intention of keeping him, but will lean on him to get them to a place where the new president and AD are in place, all parties understand the landscape, and there are enough zeros at the end of the salary (I'll guess at least seven zeros).

Michigan is a mess right now, but they won't make a panic hire. Quite frankly, they're lucky Biff is in place. He's the only chance they have to hold this together until they can get the hire they want in place.

The way Poggi is talking, I don't know if he'd take the job if it were assigned the interim tag for next year as well. I take his quotes as meaning he wants full reign of the program. If they don't offer him that, I really could see him walking (obviously, a new coach may not choose to retain him anyway). Just my impression.

I don't disagree with any of this, I'm just passing along what my connected Michigan donor friend told me. But they are going after DeBoer, and getting him to commit now would be the opposite of a panic hire, it would be an absolute home run for Michigan. Does DeBoer want to do that, given the many unknown variables you mention above? He can always say no and stay at Bama. I guess we'll see.

Sorry, not calling DeBoer a panic hire, but unless they plan on running him out of Tuscaloosa, he'd be a fool to take the job right now. So would any other coach. It's one of the reasons I keep laughing at the need to push PJ into this job in the other thread. He wouldn't touch it right now. He knows he's polarizing, and while he doesn't care (nor should he), he's smart enough to know if the new Pres and AD are not fans, they won't have any issue jetisoning him at the first opportunity they get.

As far as I know, this is currently a one-way pursuit. DeBoer may have zero interest because of the situation at Michigan (I still can't believe Manuel has kept his job), or just because he likes his current job and wants to succeed at Alabama. But, if he wants to get back north and coach in the Big Ten, doing it at Michigan with its tradition and resources--even despite the turmoil--could be appealing enough to him to overcome the immediate negatives. Again, we'll see.
