All Things P.J. Fleck Rumor Mill Thread - Listed as Candidate for Other Jobs

It is funny, because I realize we're stuck with PJ and he's stuck with us. We're not going to fire him because he runs a clean program, does a ton in the community and wins half his games. That said, no top program is ever going to take a chance on him because he only wins half his games. Its a stalemate.
Half?

I'd rather find a coordinator as good as Phil Parker and worth the money.

PJ likes his internal promotion process.

You realize Phil Parker was an internal Iowa hire and he was paid $300k in 2012 when he took over as DC.

And, Iowa promptly went 4-8. Then, 8-5 the next year. 7-6 the year after.

So 19-19 record Phil Parker's first three seasons.

Sometimes things aren't linear.

Was just about to post something similar.

Phil Parker got the Iowa DC job the same way Danny Collins got the MN DC job, they worked their way up. Parker was never a DC anywhere else prior to Iowa.

Overpaying for outside hires doesn't guarantee anything.

I do not think Coach is Narcissistic, but he is in control. I believe, to a point, the coordinators are carrying out orders, not specifically, but generally. I have noticed a few times this year, once for sure last week, after a failed 3rd and makeable, cameras on coach and he has his hand over his mouth and mic. and is chewing some major rear end.
I think if a coach goes outside the parameters of what he wants, they get lit up, His philosophy of promoting and thus maybe having more control or influence over the staff, is just how he rolls.
Not convinced that all this stuff is coordinators fault, Coach Fleck runs the show, if he doesn’t like it after the season, I think he will make the changes he feels necessary.

7 Coaching Candidates to Replace Sherrone Moore at Michigan

PJ Fleck, Head Coach, Minnesota
Fleck’s name has popped up for bigger jobs in recent seasons and could be tied to this search. He’s 65-44 at Minnesota since 2017 and has posted a losing record just twice over eight full seasons. Fleck went 30-22 at Western Michigan from 2013-16, which included a 13-1 mark in his final year in charge.

Possible UM coaching candidate: Can P.J. Fleck be a 'home-run' pick?

Ask him how he's doing and Zach Terrell doesn't hesitate: "Elite." It's even on his outgoing voicemail message, telling callers to have an "elite" day. "Elite" was ingrained in Terrell and remains in Terrell thanks to his former head football coach at Western Michigan, P.J. Fleck, who Terrell insists is much more than all the catchphrases that can have observers ― but not those who know Fleck the best ― rolling their eyes.

Not going to pay to read the rest of the article but find it hard to believe their fanbase would buy Fleck as a "homerun" hire.

no doubt they would across the board roll their eyes and view it as the "best we can do is take someone from MN?". He has no relation to Mich (so no M man points), the results are not flashy, and he doesn't coordinate himself (so you can't sell it on that he calls a kick ass offense or something).

PJ will be real far down the list unless they completely mail it in. Would not at all be surprised if they've already ID'd their guys they're after and its quiet right now because 1. signing day is past and 2. they're looking at HCs and coordinators who are in the CFP right now

I think people are going to find that the list of realistically available coaches who are equally or more accomplished than PJ is a lot smaller than you think. Penn State just hired a guy with a fairly comparable resume to PJ. Florida just hired a guy who has never coached at the P5 level. Notre Dame hired a guy with no head coaching experience a couple years ago.

I have no idea if Michigan has any interest in PJ, but if they see PJ as someone who's way beneath this job, there's a good chance they will be disappointed with whoever the hire is.

I would guess the more educated side of Michigan's fan base could be talked into it, but also I think what holds PJ back is he hasn't had another 2019 type year, if it happened next year where he goes 10-2, 7-2 in the league sneaks into the playoff as a ten or eleven sees then suddenly these helmet schools are going to view him in a different light, especially with a playoff caliber QB that he could bring with him. Be interesting to see if a school like Michigan gives Biff a Tracy Claeys type year and then they reevaluate after 2026.

I can't see Fleck being at the top of their list but he probably isn't as far down as some would assume either.

Don't see him as a hire that would fire up their fanbase but if they get turned down by their top choices it could be a Jerry Kill type situation where he becomes a viable candidate late in the process the way Kill was for us.

Take this with a grain of salt but some podcaster named George Wrightster who played at Oregon is claiming PJ is #2 on the list after Kalen DeBoer. Don’t shoot the messager. I am throwing this out there as fodder for discussion or ridicule.

Unless MN falls off the map, some program is going to, at some point, take a big swing at PJ with the idea that MN resources are what has kept him from winning bigger.

Career .590 win% and .595% is needed to make the Coaching Hall of Fame.

I doubt it'll happen but it would be interesting to know who would be on Coyle's list if Fleck were to get the Michigan offer. Nick Rallis would probably be up there I would think. Probably would go the coordinator route as there's not a great deal of appealing options at this point in the cycle.

If PJ were to leave they almost have to go with an interim for a year. A program like MN can't hire after the coaching cycle is already over. That's how you end up with Brewster.
