All Things Minnesota at Oregon Road Game Thread

Taking a grandson to the game - he’s devastated that he’s being pulled out of school for two days. We’re flying out Thursday, staying in Oceanside one night and Salem the next, then flying home Saturday. Seats in section 21.
That mean's driving I-5 Friday night after the game to get to your Salem hotel. Word of caution, lots of people will be on I-5 headed north after the game, it will be dark and some may have consumed beverages during the game. Just be safe and expect the Oregon State Police to be out there.

We fly in to Portland first thing Friday morning, day/night in Eugene, and then will figure out what to do in Portland on Saturday. I was really hoping there'd be another D1 football or basketball game in the state on Saturday, but no dice. I looked at every school, notta.

Looking forward to a fun day/night on Friday.

Go Gophers!!
Check out the U of O athletic facilities, especially Hayward Field. Also, not sure it's you're thing, given the emphasis on sports, but Powells Books in PDX is probably the largest bookstore in the US west of NYC.

Powell’s is also a two block walk to Deschutes Brewery that has maybe the best wings I’ve ever had…full wings, all of them are smoked and I had the buffalo wings, and it is kid friendly, if needed.

Also, from that area, about 3-4 miles, almost due north across the Willamette, it’s a little east, is an area on Mississippi street that has awesome food options all over the place, I am partial to Matt’s BBQ on the north side of the district. Lots of cool shops.

I can't make the trip but Deschutes would be fun to visit.

Best buddy and I are heading out on Thursday and staying at the Graduate Hilton for two nights. Playing golf at Eugene Country Club Friday morning and then game Friday night (on my actual birthday as well. I can’t wait!). Seats in section 37. Also looking to see about U of M tailgate or if there is a Gophers get together on Thursday evening. Any info of any events going on?

Eugene Country Club is a very nice course, stay in the fairways and you'll be ok. When my father-in-law (Yale Golf Team Captain) played ECC he just said "Too many damn trees" LOL

Across the street from the Graduate is the Fifth Street Public Market and the Gordon Hotel, it's a good place to check out. Might also check out the Oakway area. Sabai in Oakway is one of my favorite restaurants in Eugene. Also, Bar Purlieu and Lion and Owl are quite good. If you're looking for a nice Oregon Pinot Noir or other wine, stop by Broadway Wine Merchant at Oakway, Angus is my "wine guy" he'll take good care of you.

You share the same birthdate with my father, he would have been 105 on Nov 14th. WWII vet, survived the Battle of the Bulge, involved in liberating some Nazi "work camps".

Yale's golf team captain seems a little young to be your father in law, how in the world does he have a daughter young enough for you to be married to?!?

My wife is originally from Portland, and a few years ago, we drove there *24 hour drive from st Cloud) and its a beautiful area. We toured the Tillamook factory and drove through some of the woods. They make trees in Minnesota look like branches

I have a friend who searches out "old growth" forests, we were comparing hiking trails one day and I have a couple pics I'll try and find. One with my wife standing next to a log that's about 5 feet in diameter. I showed my friend a pic I took of my wife next to a tree that had been torn apart by a bear. He said "I know that tree and people aren't suppose to be in there" I smiled and said nothing. He was right, it was and is still a restricted access area.

I attached a photo from Waldo Lake, it's a beautiful very clean and clear lake, no motor vehicles, boats, pontoon aircraft etc allowed. The lake is at 5,700 feet elevation, about 10 sq miles with a max depth of a bit over 400 feet. It's totally clear, just amazing.

My father never talked about it, first time I knew was at his funeral.
I only heard one story from my father about clearing out a city near the end of the war, where they were rolling into towns with tanks and just blowing up buildings so nazis could not occupy or hide in them. He and a few others were instructed to enter the buildings to confirm that they were empty. My father entered a building with a basement, no gun drawn and encountered about 20 nazis hiding in the basement, and they all immediately surrendered to him. He spoke German and told them to hold still, ran out to stop anyone from firing on the building, went back down and escorted the prisoners out.

I heard some other stories from someone he served with, who ended up being a well regarded newspaper writer in New Orleans, and they become lifetime best friends. I can understand why so many of those men were reluctant to tell stories.

Anyone up for taking over a pregame bar in Eugene? 4 of us in our group. Looks like The Cooler could be an option.

That is breathtaking. That looks like a place we would go camping. We live in South Carolina and there's A LOT of huge trees, including the Angel Oak, which is over 400 years old and its not letting me attach a picture. (Yes I realize its gotten a tad off topic)

I posted a pdf earlier that is a pic of my wife and friends on a day hike. The trees in the pic are pretty good sized old growth. See attached pdf.

The Cooler should be a good choice, it's probably the closest bar to Autzen. Haven't been in there in a couple decades, it's always had a reputation of being an average Duck sports bar with electronic gaming etc. Doubt you'll "take over" the Cooler.

Re. Your avatar, The Princess Bridge was a fun book and movie.

That is really big. Oregon has Douglas firs, South Carolina has really old oak trees that spread out.
My wife just shrunk down the original collage. Thats the Angel Oak

That's a big tree, beautiful. We also have some Redwoods in Oregon if you know were to go. There's a Doug Fir over in the Southwest Oregon area that's been measured at 327 feet.
