We stink.

I think of it a bit differently. The Gophers could go to 30 middling bowls in a row but if Rutgers would go to 3 playoffs and an Orange bowl, I'd say they passed the Gophers at that point.
Makes for an interesting discussion. Would you prefer a couple great years mixed in with a lot of bad years, or to never be great but also avoid those brutal years.....

Let's say after this year Cignetti leaves and Indiana falls back down to where they have been for most of the past few decades which is near the bottom of the conference struggling to win more then 2-3 conference games each year and missing even the crappiest of bowls most years.

Would the fanbase be fine with sucking again because at least they got close to the mountain top for a couple of seasons?

Define close to the mountain top.

A really good thought experiment is would you rather have the Illinois 2005-present or the Minnesota 2005-present or Indiana-present

Illinois
1 Rose Bowl
1 new years day non BCS/NY6/playoff
2 9 wins seasons
14 non bowl seasons

Minnesota
0 major bowls
2 new years day non BCS/NY6/playoff
4 9 win seasons
6 non bowl seasons

Indiana
1 playoff appearance
2 New Year’s Day non BCS/NY6/playoff
1 9 win season (about to have two)
15 non bowl seasons

Obviously you take Indiana right NOW due to trajectory

But if all three coaches quit today.
What 20 years would you rather have had the last 20?

yes, although that is an interesting discussion, I think it is fairly obvious the Indiana football program has surpassed the MN football program during Fleck's tenure and that was my original point. Just like the MN football program has surpassed Nebraska's in that same time frame despite the fact Nebraska won national championships more recently in the '90's

Agree
But I do not agree with the same statement about Illinois

It is tough because the college football landscape has changed so drastically in the last few years.

I probably lean towards Illinois in that scenario due to the Rose Bowl and because Indiana's CFP appearance was one and done and not competitive.

The only thing that gives me a little pause is that a non-bowl season in the last 20 years basically means your team was under .500 on the season. That is a lot of really bad years for Illinois and Indiana. Years with just a couple Big Ten wins are not fun at all and that would be a bunch of them. Indiana has had 13 seasons in that stretch where they won 2 or fewer conference games. Those are brutal seasons.

I would have missed the last 6 bowls and maybe like 6 more year of no bowls. if we can go back in time and beat either Iowa or Wisconsin in 19’ to make the Big Ten Chsmpionship (lose) and make it to the Rose Bowl game (win or lose)….. 2019 was the best. But still bitter sweet for me cus I’m from California n my dream has always been to see the Gophs in the Rose Bowl………. Last season I got my dream but it wasn’t the same haha (UCLA)

The Gophers don’t stink they are just average. . 8-4 is more like 6-4 when you discount the annual 2 game walkovers. Fleck is a classic example of the Peter Principle. He has risen to his level of incompetence. To expect more iof him in terms of success is delusional.

Yes but when people make a comparison to Mason they have to remember that was the era of 4 walkovers

So kind of A or B over a 5 year period:

A:
11-2
4-8
10-3
3-9
12-1

B:
9-4
7-6
8-5
8-5
7-6

If a significant number of the bowl seasons are 6-6/7-5 and non bowl seasons are 4-8/5-7, I don't really see a difference. I might watch the Quick Lane Bowl if I'm stuck in the house for some reason but wouldn't make it a priority. And 1-2 more B1G wins doean't mean a whole much more to me when the opponent is NW or Purdue vs a non-conf win vs. Nobody State. I'd pick the Illinois scenario because it was a Rose Bowl. Last years Indiana CFP in and out appearance doesn't have the same cache.
