All Things P.J. Fleck Rumor Mill Thread - Listed as Candidate for Other Jobs

IMO, Fleck's brand/culture/philosophy in his mind is meant for more than a middling college football market. That's why there was interest in UCLA...not necessarily for the program but for the locale. If Covid hadn't have happened, we'd be on year 2-3 of our next coach.
Who said there was interest? There was one rumor that almost no one bought because UCLA has no money. But ok...

Time to increase the buyout!
I’m good with it. But don’t increase his buyout to leave

We would be morons to fire him but if he wants to go let him go…

That’s where I’m at

PJ’s salary and buyout both outperform his coaching performance without a doubt. His agent has played dipshit Coyle like a drum.
Not very good at math huh. Too many concussions during those "thousands of snaps in college football" that you use to justify your terrible takes? ;)

UCLA coaching candidates: 8 names who could replace DeShaun Foster after firing

P.J. Fleck, Minnesota head coach

P.J. Fleck has already established himself as a strong coach in the Big Ten Conference; however, he may have already hit the program's ceiling with Minnesota. A move to UCLA could potentially open up more resources for the coach with a career 90-62 record.

Fleck has been with Minnesota since 2017 and has a 60-40 record with the Golden Gophers across nine seasons. He has led the program to four straight bowl victories and is 6-0 in bowl games with Minnesota.

Go Gophers!!

🥱

UCLA talked to PJ last time around, right? Or that was the rumor anyway.

Yeah I'm not sure I understand the 'more resources' comment.
Right. I believe it was reported or rumored that UCLA couldn't or wouldn't offer PJ even what he was making here. They assumed he could be had strictly for the LA allure.

And they're still like $100 million or more in debt. They have worse practice facilities than most of the conference, and they play about an hour away from campus with LA traffic. It's not a good job.

Plus they contribute to helping California Berkeley pay down their debt.

PJ likes this job. UCLA is not on his radar. It would be a step back. USC is the football flagship of Southern California. He holds the top job here. He would not there.

I'm sure that UCLA is not on his radar but it seemed to be last go round until PJ learned of UCLA's poverty.

Imagine a job with less resources than Minnesota but higher expectations than Minnesota and then put it in an elite climate with high motor vehicle traffic.
That is the UCLA job

Yeah but the money game has changed and ucla could have some big spenders walk thru the door and change the financials overnight

It also is basically in Beverly Hills. The climate beats nearly every other school. The ocean and the beach isn't exactly walking distance but it is 20 minutes away. UCLA has a lot to offer...they do need some money to compete.

I said it has elite climate
But it’s a poverty program

Imagine notre dame expectations but you coach for Villanova

Shama chimes in:

The UCLA opening has already prompted speculation about Golden Gophers coach P.J. Fleck going to Los Angeles. A couple of sources told Sports Headliners that Fleck’s wife, Heather, would like living in Southern California.

Don’t back up the moving trucks anytime soon, though. First, Big Ten institutions have no history in the last 50 years of hiring another program’s head coach. Also, UCLA has woeful fan support and is believed to rank among the Big Ten bottom feeders in Name, Image and Likeness money.

And why would Fleck want to leave for a rebuild? More probable in prompting a move could be if a rare opportunity to lead a program with abundant tradition and resources surfaces. Notre Dame is an example, but that job won’t be opening after this year or next.

Go Gophers!!
