He looked pretty confident the whole game. Few mental errors but those can be improved with time and experience. My girlfriend was shocked to hear that this was his first college start.

I'm shocked to hear someone on GopherHole has a girlfriend 😜

And I also agree with your analysis BTW 👍

Clear first game jitters but he showed good pocket play, great ball placement and a lack of stupid passes. Thinking about this game compared to 2023 Eastern Michigan he played better than Kaliakmanis against what is likely a better opponent with less experience, he looks great. That INT was not his fault.

Drake played great, Geers needs to catch the ball, no defensive sack potential.

B. Threw 1 ball that should've been picked, one that absolutely could've, and wasn't great in the RZ. Of course he has a bunch of new receivers and a new line so I have no idea if it was on him. Threw 3-5 more balls that easily could've been caught. Was generally accurate, on time, and seemed to make decent decisions. The 1 pick was a fluke but I didn't love that I think 3 times he tried to throw check downs to tightly covered TEs behind the LOS. At best those are no gains but more likely they're losses and would be better as throw aways. Really showed a live arm though and I only recall one other ball that was just off.

He had a very solid game and could have been allot better if the receivers helped out but he made a few mistakes as well but very solid.

The play calling in the red zone is why they ceased up down there. Passing the ball to get there and trying to run when there.

Solid B. Much to like, a little to improve on.
Very encouraging.

Hard to complain. The INT was not his fault. I was surprised that the game started with lots of passes. How refreshing to have a QB capable of and confident in passing the ball into so,e pretty tight windows.

My comparison point of reference was Kaliakmanis in 2023. If we don't flub this with poor offensive line play, oh man do we have a quality qb at worst. We need to keep building around this kid.

He is the most natural thrower I can remember here.

He had a couple bad plays but he also had a couple bad plays made around him. IMO, Smith could have made a play on keeping his feet in and we had a couple bad drops.
His release is fantastic.

“Touch” is an issue with pass placement making plays herder than they should be. Occasionally he is also locking onto the wrong guy and not seeing the open guy.

On the other hand with some passes it looks like he is fully aware (at least for that play) where the available space on the field is and when his guys will be there, that paid off several times.

Good for a first game.

A, couldn’t be anything but.

R-Fr making his first start, against a very good G5 program. Battled adversity, shaky OL/WR play. It’s easy to play the “coulda” game but he was a couple throws, and better officiating, away from 300 yards, another TD and no INTs. Even his actual stat line is INSANE to expect for a gopher QB. TM in the magical 19 season only crossed 290 several times and he had multiple NFL players in front of him. I know he has DT but still.

In the context of his situation this is the easiest A.

I have zero concerns with his touch after tonight. Great first game and could have been fantastic without the drops.

He's good and he'll get better! The confidence the play calling showed in him passing the ball in situations we haven't done previously (we would of run or thrown short) was a statement for me of what the coaching staff thinks about this guy...he is good and like we ride one RB over and over, we are going to let this guy pass the ball!!
So, very excited to see how our offense develops. Confident we are going to get better each game!

Very surprised and pleased that PJ did not baby him and restrict him to 20-25 passes. Against teams from lesser conferences, he usually leans heavily on the run game and we read lots of complaints about "RUTM". His confidence in the kid was encouraging.

If you grade him as a guy making his first start, it’s an A for me. This is not about mistake free football in this context.

I went B. For a redshirt freshman getting his first real taste of action he played very well. Tons of room for growth and improvement which is really exciting.

Didn't play like a freshman and has a chance to be special as he develops and gets more experience.
