Professional sports is not the mission nor core product of the University of Minnesota. Students should not be forced to pay for athletes (some of whom can only loosely be termed student athletes). Stop the oversized tail wagging the dog.

I think the distinction is that football is generating a large profit and covering the losses from other programs, and I believe athletics has a projected loss right of more than $8M.
 

IMO, if schools are doing this and the SEC/B1G get the college expansion wrong, we will start to see the ramifications of it all.

Yeah, but that has always been part of the understanding. The socialistic nature of it made it still feel somewhat amateur. If the end goal(as many on here seem to want) is to get rid of the collegiate sports and become de facto second tier professional sports, then it is sort of pointless to tie it to college. You know how many people at a Gopher football game have another non-revenue sport that they follow or attend? It's a lot.

I don't think that's the end goal and doesn't address the here and now. Of the Gophs have a great season, it should cover maybe half of the overall projected loss. It's the reality of the court ruling.

I don't know I have seen a lot of posts that say just cut the non-revenue sports. I know it is not the stated goal, but that seems to be the theme.
 






It's one of the most liberal colleges on the planet.

Take from some to give it away to others. Perfect! It's a liberals dream!

Pretty much busted me HitMe, however as was once stated... "show me the fees and I'll show you an egregious one"... or similar.

With a little research looks like the Radio K fee of $4.99 per semester is fairly outragious for the content delivered.

Admittedly a stretch. BTW, there is a $6.00 stadium fee (football) that is assessed each semester as well. So, the precedent was set...first paying for the student section and now paying for a subset of student athletes.

P.S. I like having a fan. With Mrs. Billd I now have two. Thanks.

According to the One Stop fees description, it does go to facilities.

However, money is somewhat fungible. Now that they're getting this $100/semester from every 6+ credit enrolled student on the TC campus, that frees up other money to be spent on rev share payments/NIL deals with players.

So it's somewhat hand-wavy, just as I'm guessing the finance folks like it

Because our Athletic Director is not good at fundraising, I can see the fee paing off, say Athletes Village. Arguably, no debt makes the overall university more financially healthy and benefits all.
I see that argument. Students paying money to pay athletes is a non starter for me. I also get one could argue it is a shell game.
 

But, but…how?! I’ve been told that greedy athletic departments were hoarding the cash they raked in by oppressing their slave-labor athletes. There was so much cash that the courts had to force them to pay the players so it was more equitable…but only some of the players will get paid, so not THAT equitable. Now athletic departments must either cut non-revenue sports (doesn’t sound very equitable) or charge the students another fee (doesn’t sound very equitable). What happened to all that cash?
The entire argument for revenue sharing with student athletes is bullshit. Fewer than 25 schools have athletic departments that make a profit. Hundreds run in the red and have always been supplemented by general funds (and student fees).

University students use the athletic facilities for physical education classes, intramural sports, gatherings and more. There is wear and tear and probably other costs that this fee will be used for. If there is $10 million dollars worth is the question.
