Cedric Tomes commits!!!

Both Harris and Jackson were quick and STRONG. Their overall physicality made them so tough to play against. Still can’t help but imagine what could have been if Harris stayed healthy.
Harris was not really that quick. He was strong though. He was a good player for MN.

Cedric Tomes is better than Harris and Jackson, combined. 😏
I keep coming back to this when I see the bolded "Cedric Tomes Commits" only to find it's nothing about Cedric Tomes. Anyone know when Tomes will be joining the others on campus for the summer?

He's going to be a senior in high school this fall, so I doubt he will be joining the team this summer.

Interesting… saw him three times last year and probably a dozen times overall.. I thought the offer by Ben when he made it was solid… IMO I question his quickness and power 5 athletic ability. Not real tall either. he has free reign at ER and will dribble like Curly Neal to get a shot off… I think his first year as a Gopher he will be the type you will be able to tell right away if he can handle the Big 10.. overall nothing to lose so worth the scholarship.. let’s go!

Watched him last night…. If you can find a replay of the whole CDH East Ridge game from last night watch it.. tell us what you think… he is 5”11… initiates a lot of contact and complains when he didn’t get the call.. CDH was physical.. he made some tough but took a lot of bad shots.. he won’t help much next year but I am cool with the signing.. my opinion above hasn’t changed.. some of high school move won’t translate to the Big 10

I talked to a ER fan I knew.. said it’s 25 seconds of dribble and then he shoots.. he said against Totino Grace everything went in and he shot 25 free throws…

I have watched 3-4 video's of East Ridge and C. Tomes. Note on 247 he is rated the 5th best player in the state, so keep that in mind.

Some of the time 6-3 184 JoJo Mitchell a St. Thomas signer was on him, but usually one of two other very small fast guards. Tomes was able to get past double teams and hit floaters and teammates over and over. He hit quite a few shots from 5 ft past the 3 pt line, the net doesn't move. Cretin won pretty easy as their team is loaded and East Ridge, beyond Tomes is underwelming. For them to win, like against Totino, he has to put up many many shots. Is he a ball hog, is it someone who is the only one who can get their own shot? Star tribune doenst have all their stats, so I don't know his percentages.

Positives, he is a superb ball handler and oustide shooter. He changes gears very fast, and has defenders off balance. He put 50 on Totino, and they may be the most athletic team in the state. He is an under-rated passer. I saw some great assists.

Negatives, he may be lucky to be 6'. He over dribbles at times, I have compared him to Marcus Carr, but he is smaller. Will be a bit of a liability on defense at his size and limited athleticism. I have also said Tartan's Jake Sullivan had a similar game and limited athleticism and carved out a nice career at Iowa St.

As a freshmen, he could be a lights out shooter off screens, and a backup pg to Willis, Asuma. Will he adjust some of his playground game to Medved's system? Time will tell.

Great write up. Thanks for doing this!

Good stuff.. Sullivan was an elite shooter lots of catch and shoot he was deadly at Iowa st.. if Tomes can shoot high 30’s from three I will take it… Sullivan was more deadly than Hoffarber from three…

Tomes is a volume shooter. He needs to work hard on the catch and shoot.. right now it’s five dribbles and shoot the three..

Good post!

Tomes is having to play point, which means he has to dribble and start the offense, then use his teammates to set picks for him. He's a good shooter so he shouldn't have a problem coming off picks without the ball and then catching and shooting. That's something Niko will work on. No worries on my part.

Went to see Cedric last night…..scored 38 against Irondale. 3 level scorer as described here. Had a couple shots swatted at the rim, but also took contact and could have been at the line for 2 or 3 more two shot fouls. Since his 50 point game, he also had 47 vs. Stillwater and 29 against White Bear.

Asking your opinion. Is he a point guard in college or a small two guard? How he is scoring now especially levels 2 and 3.. Do you see that translating to the next level… Thanks! 🙏

I see things through maroon and gold glasses, so keep that in mind, BUT I think he would be the best ball handler if he were on the current team. He’s a gym rat (father has been assistant coaching in the east metro forever) and has a nice feel for offense.

As Calvin Murphy used to say (youngsters look him up) the biggest discrimination is against size……his older brother played at Air Force and is now an assistant coach there. They hide him off the ball on defense but they can’t afford to get him in foul trouble.

Not saying he’ll be a star, but he will help next year IMHO.

Tomes is a very polarizing player. He puts up crazy scoring numbers on a decent Suburban team. The team needs him to score a lot, he averages 35ppg, 4.2 assists. If he was on a balanced stacked team like Tartan, Wayzata, or Maple Grove, he would probably average 18 ppg and 6 assists.

He is the 6th rated player in the state on 247. Let's compare him to the 5th, Jayden Moore out of Hopkins. He also is 6' on a good day. He puts up 18ppg, 4 reb, 9.6 assists. He is a much better athlete. He isn't a shooter, but is a great defender, and a true pg.

Does one take a Jayden Moore and hope he can learn how to shoot? Does one take a Tomes, who can fill it up all over the court, but probably won't be a good defender, will have to learn to set others up more, and adjust his game. Our team next year needing some shooters may have been a factor. Not sure what the status of Moore as a recruit is, and whether he's concentrating on basketball or football.

I think Tomes will be a backup pg for a year or two behind Willis, and Asuma next year. Will there be times he runs of screens like a SG, sure. With his size he will almost always guard a pg. Could a 6-4 athlete shut him down? Sure, buy why would a team with a 6-4 athletic defender put him on a backup-backup pg? And if you do that, is your pg then trying to guard a strong athlete like Reynolds?

You always take the shooter. You can teach a shooter to play defense. It's very hard to fix a bad shot once a kid gets to college.

I would take Tomes, the shooter.

I thought Moore committed to UNDakota for Basketball, but now ESPN and 247 say undecided?
