All Things 2025 Minnesota Vikings Off-Season Thread

Better than Flacco or Wentz. At least as good as Tannehill but much younger and maybe cheaper. Good trade.

Also the potential backup QB options go well beyond those 3. Any number could be available for modest future draft picks between now and the end of August.
Nailed it.

What’s your take on Sam Howell to Vikes?

I was literally going to post last night after Seattle took Milroe that the Vikings should be calling Seattle about Howell. I'm a big Howell fan; Bienemy tried to get him killed in Washington playing behind that abysmal OL and I don't really care what happened in Seattle.

I think the Vikings struck gold; KOC and McCown will be able to turn Howell into a guy they can feel comfortable turning to in limited spot duty if/when necessary.

I think this is a great move for the Vikings.

Agreed with others. I think among the reasonable options out there Howell was my preferred choice to bring in as a backup.

Alec Lewis with The Athletic going with this guy as the favorite pick of the Vikings:

Tyrion Ingram-Dawkins, DT/Edge, Georgia

When defensive coordinator Brian Flores thinks he can get the most out of a player, it’s hard not to trust him. The versatile Ingram-Dawkins has the length to play on the edge, the strength to stop the run on the interior and the movement skills to run twists and stunts from the inside. Last year, the Vikings used veteran Jihad Ward in a versatile role. Ingram-Dawkins might be a younger, more dynamic version with upside.

What happens if he doesn’t pass his physical? Redo the draft?

Sneaky best trade of the Draft that didn't receive a lot of acknowledgement. I know Ogie likes this guy as much as I do, especially as a backup. Has a bit of young Favre to his game:

* Good arm strength and deep ball
* Capable runner (had to in WAS)
* Gritty kid and competitor
* Completes a lot passes to both teams

I was hoping for Daniel Jones in FA but this is even better IMO. Kwesi doing more good work solidifying this roster.

Arm strength!!!

The Deep ball!!!!!

I'm all in.

The Vikings will retain a key piece of their defense through 2026 as they signed a contract extension with edge rusher Andrew Van Ginkel on Tuesday.

The extension is for a single season and $23 million, $22.4 of which is guaranteed, according to a league source with knowledge of the deal.

Van Ginkel, who originally signed with the Vikings in March 2024 on a two-year deal worth up to $20 million, had the second-most sacks (11.5) and quarterback hurries (19) on the team last season behind fellow outside linebacker Jonathan Greenard.

Skol Vikes!!

No coronation needed: Vikings QB J.J. McCarthy says, ‘I know I’m ready to start’

Vikings players came back to the team’s practice facility in Eagan for the start of offseason workouts on April 21. Soon after linebacker Jonathan Greenard returned to the locker room, he was greeted by a face that had been around the TCO Performance Center for months.

“A lot of people are just saying, ‘How you doing?’ just to check off a box. I mean, he genuinely wants to know,“ Greenard said. “[It’s], ‘Hey, how are you doing? How’s family doing?’ And that’s what you want in your quarterback, a younger guy as well, especially when he has this grand opportunity for him.

“We’re all behind him. I mean, we’re all standing 10 toes [down] with J.J.“

The Vikings have not officially named J.J. McCarthy their starting quarterback for 2025 and might not make such a designation for months. But inside the team’s headquarters, no announcement seems necessary.

The Vikings are preparing as if McCarthy will be their starter in 2025 and plan to give him the majority of first-team snaps during their offseason program. The second-year quarterback stayed in Minnesota to work out all offseason, beginning on-field sessions in January, and he said Tuesday he feels better now than he did before he tore his right meniscus in August.

Whether throwing more passes in a workout than coach Kevin O’Connell estimates he’ll throw during a spring practice or connecting with veteran teammates on a club coming off a 14-win season, McCarthy seems to be operating as if the job will be his. He made it clear Tuesday he has no doubt about whether he’s ready for it.

“I know I’m ready to start,” he said, “because of all the work I’ve put in and just the confidence in my skills and abilities and just being able to do my job and simplify things to the best of my ability, every single day. I have a tremendous coaching staff, a tremendous group of guys around me that I can lean on, and they can lean on me.”

Is Howell really the backup?? I could see the #3 guy.

We need a vet, to mentor McCarthy
KOC is McCarthy's mentor. He revitalized Darnold's career and got him paid. He even managed to make Dobbs look like a viable QB for a few games.

Josh McCown is probably as much if not more of a mentor to McCarthy.

Hopefully they can spread that to Howell as well. He's in in Eagan to help win games for the Vikings should McCarthy get injured or prove to be incapable, not be a mentor.

Yeah...I kind of shortchanged McCown and his importance to the coaching staff and QBs.

I know my opinion is less than worthless, just prefacing that first.

What you (and others with similar comments) say here doesn't work for me.

An ideal backup is a vet who also mentor's, and can still come in and win a game or two. That's not Howell, to me.

I'm still hoping somehow Rodgers decides being a mentor/backup is better than retiring and comes here :devilish:

The list of QBs that would be on that list are near zero. We’re actually at a pretty down point in the nfl in terms of qb talent when you have teams that will be starting Fields, Rudolph, Flacco (or Pickett), Richardson (or Jones), Smith, Wilson, and Darnold plus 7 or so 1st or 2nd year starters

Your point is fair.

I should have added to the ideal backup criteria list: is not trying to be a starter!

Lot of people think that instantly removes Cousins and Rodgers from the list. I agree for Cousins, I think he still have enough juice and now he will not be only a year removed from Achilles rupture ... he just wasn't the same physically last year. I'm not as sure for Rodgers. If he deices to roll the dice by passing on Pittsburgh ... where else is left? He has one year left in the tank. A ring with half a season or less of physical wear and tear is worth more than a full season of wear and tear and probably no ring. My opinion

Rodgers: $10M or less, one year. Primary role mentor. If McCarthy falters and/or tweaks the injury, then he can come in and be the hero. This is a Super Bowl built team. Win now.

Rodgers has plenty of money. He's not going anywhere to be a backup/mentor.

You're presuming the Vikings would want Rodgers for that role.

I don't think they would, assuming good health for the current QBs on the roster.
