Most of the $ amounts in the media are leaked by the "agents". Are they exaggerated? Probably. That happens with NFL reporting too. Are the people reporting them just pulling them out of thin air? No.

You're not even close to the reason of why people oppose him (or any other player who has played 5 years) returning for another year. Do you have one of those minds that is impervious to outside information and incapable of understanding others' viewpoints?

Garza is on a 2 year, $4.5MM deal.

Even if it's a NIL argument, I can't see how he missed any potential money. It was implemented in 2021. He had 4 seasons of being eligible for whatever money he could make from NIL.

Dawson Garcia is kind of an interesting canary in the coalmine. If he is granted another season, I guess they are just going to add another season for everyone. If you're going to add 1 more year for everyone? Why not 2? Why not 3?

I agree with the sentiments.

My point here is its something I think that is popular. However, I do jot endorse the argument so much as think that others will.

However, I also think if he beeaks his leg, its too bad so sad.

As a Vet I’ve noted that the mere mention of PTSD is the often intellectually disarming even for some professionals. To the point where they lose thier ability/will to rationally assess how often it actually shows up.

With Mental Health, colloquially one often not need to even get specific. It’s given the same irrational reverence.

I also think are enough that I think would eat up that argument, even as silly as I present. If you veiw the game logs you can use the data to see the marked decline in play. Cognitive dissonance will accomplish the rest.

No I'm very pervious to others' views. Bringing Garcia at MN into an ethics stance against college basketball players playing extra years may have confused me, much like my wife's use of exclamation points. I am 100% with those against perpetual eligibility, but the powers that be have never asked me an opinion and I have no influence. I'd love to see Dawson on this team. I enjoy the message board, and this time of year am quite studious of others' posts. People post updates usually before I see the news. Some posters are very interesting, keep me current, and worth engaging, but most are curt and I'm not heavily invested. Probably the norm I guess.
 




Can't blame Dawson for getting every penny he can. We need to have donors pay the man to keep him here if it comes to it, in July. Anyway, I think he'll get some minutes in the nba, he has a 3 ball and great size. Would be interesting if he tries to play in Spain as a pro, not sure if he or his family still have any connections to Spain, I'm sure someone here knows.

Something tells me if he becomes eligible late, DTA will find some generous donor who will cough up the money to keep him here.
It would be a very interesting team with him on it!
Oh and I understand and agree with those of you who object to him getting another year, but if he does get it why shouldn't we take advantage of it!
One final thing we do not know if his family issues have been resolved it may be what is keeping him around, the ability to make good money and stay close to home! Who really knows?

The players actually do have a common interest with the NCAA and the Universities: Sustainability of the business model. Two three more years of this and the TV contracts will start to shrink and so will the NIL dollars. Putting together a system with a logical, even lucrative cap, is a winning formula for the players, the conferences, the agents and the NCAA.
 


The Supreme Court Justices in Alstad did not discuss or rule that college sports was a pro sports league. They suggested that the students had the right not to have a second party, the NCAA interfere with the level of benefits they received as student athletes. The court still considers the athletes as students at universities for the purpose of receiving an education. In that, there was no debate and all parties had agreed to this as an established truth. College sports will not become an alternative pro league as such. At least not yet.

Wait. Are you saying that reporting of NFL Contracts are pulled out of thin air? I think there’s mutual agreement on both sides when these agreements are signed. If you go to the Vikings and ask them if a contract was signed with so and so player. They will verify it.
Is that’s what’s happening in college basketball?
You can’t tell me it is.

Well he can- but you will say it's not true. All the information out there is certainly not accurate here, but I think you are fighting against reality because reality seems so bizarre. It is strange- but probably more true than not.

I *think* what the OP was suggesting was that a contract might be for $50 million, but that's only the value if the player earns every roster bonus, workout bonus, bonus for playoff wins, etc.

It's next to impossible for players to earn every bonus and exercise every clause in their contracts and so the real amount they earn will be less than the max value that gets reported in the media - you know, the headline that says, "So and so signed a contract for up to $x million."

That's true but the numbers in the contract are legit at least. The player might not earn all that money but they aren't plucked out of thin air either the way it feels like a lot of NIL/Pay for Play numbers are.

I'm saying the agents will report: "Sam Darnold signed a 3 year $110 million deal." It's technically true. But when you look at the contract, it's basically a 1 year $25 million deal that Seattle can get out of by releasing him with no penalty after one year. The agent will report the version that makes them look good and leave out the details.

I suspect this happens with NIL too. Perhaps school X agreed to pay player Y $500K but might add up to a million more after the House Settlement and revenue sharing are determined. The agent will report "my guy got $1.5 million" but they didn't and might never get that much.

The real answer is for the major conferences to get together on an agreement and then maybe include the NCAA for grins.

Yup, cutting to the guaranteed money part of the contract is the best way to value it.
 

Does a California superior court that violates Alstad really matter? I don't think so.
