2025 Transfer Portal Watch

Instate recruiting has been bad ever since Minnesota started producing multiple high major players. Not a secret. Will be even harder now that there will be fewer opportunities for younger players.
Actually it may well improve. We have a better coach and with less high D1 opportunities they may stay home more.

Which is why I am personally grateful for St. Thomas becoming a second destination for DI talent. Minnesota can afford this second DI school.

Some buzz of Heide getting more than we were willing to pay.
Here come the swarm of "Obviously Niko didn't want Heide" posts.
It was bound to happen on one of these fronts. The Gophers have some money, but if a rich program is willing to overpay...it's not much different than the free agent market in the pros. No team ends up with their entire wish list. If his folks still lived here, that would be one thing, but I think they live south now; do I remember that right?

Bell and ElAmin. Neither will work in this town again!
Clem was candid about missing out on Troy Bell but he was the exception to the rule from
1986-1999. Clem started “plus 1” in the Minnesota recruiting category having brought Brett McNeal to Western Kentucky. With a free transfer rule McNeal wouid have been hugely helpful to the 1986-1987 backcourt with Gaffney & Zurcher and the 1987-1988 backcourt with first years Newbern & Lynch (along w/ Gaffney). (In my world in which Gopher basketball players with underappreciated-but-distinguished-careers are periodically honored at halftime, Ray Gaffney would be at the top of the list. IIRC, he was the only senior on the 1988-1989 squad. His senior night was a mid-week game against Michigan State before a modest crowd of 12,000 or so but Williams Arena roared for him that evening and Clem had tears in his eyes.)

Well if the 5th year thing comes to pass then he has to go to the SEC next year as he has played in PAC12 (now a big ten team, ACC, and Big Ten over his 3 seasons. Year 4 will take him to the Big 12 for the first time. SEC is the only one not accounted for yet.

Truly the dumbest timeline we are living in right now.

He's come full circle. He was originally a Kansas commit out of HS. Lol.

At least we know he's getting a quality education out of this.
