2025 Transfer Portal Watch

Still desperately need a big body or two. Small ball works in lesser leagues and occasionally in bigger ones, but a complete team needs a force in the middle to make bunnies, get rebounds and keep others away from the basket.
been hearing very little about being in contact with any bigs in the portal.....certainly interested in what we do there.....we clearly have a gapping hole there both for a starter and a bench

If his roster is constructed like last year, hes gonna run out a bunch of shooting forwards between 6'7-6'9, and hes gonna have big guards, but rarely have a true "big."

Medved had one guy on roster last year that was 6'11 who played 7 minutes a game this year

Oh I agree. Ive ALWAYS wanted a roster loaded with skilled forwards. Almost seems like a cheat code If you got 3 guys out there at all times who can stretch the floor at 6'8. I'd like to see him snag one more. Or a center that can stretch the floor like Liam Robbins did at times lol

I wouldn't call 35% prolific, but its still very good. Better than anyone on our team that played major minutes besides Garcia.

Here's to hoping we get a couple guys out of the Enis/Evans/Lindsay/Miles/Keshawn Williams(?) bin. just load the floor with shooters that can slash and rebound.

I mentioned Williams because hes a CSU transfer. Wasn't asked to do much last year likely because he was buried behind Clifford, Lake and Evans. But looking back to his NIU stint, he can score
35% on 256 attempts is prolific more for the volume -- for reference our leading 3P attempters were Mike Mitchell who shot 33% on 151 attempts, Lu'Cye Patterson who shot 26% on 140 attempts, and Dawson Garcia who shot 37% on 134 attempts.

Asuma attempted 70 3PT (36%), BJ Omot attempted 188 in his last full season (28% ouch, lets hope it's closer to that 4 game Cal sample of 35%), and Jaylen Crocker-Johnson attempted 96 (35%). Kyan Evans attempted 157 (44%) as the 3rd option on the team.

yup he runs a ton of 5 out and 4 out sets....so he clearly needs a ton of "wings" but i do think in the big ten hes going to need a big to match up defensively with other schools bigs.....will be interesting how much he tweaks his philosophy

JCJ, BJ, and hopefully Bobby would be a pretty solid group to start with, and would match exactly what Niko has used in the past!

lets hope we have 2-3 additions this week!

Will be interesting to see how Medved adapts to the Big Ten because you are correct that his CSU rosters were definitely light on size.

I suppose I looked at straight percentages and not attempts along with it. I'm not sure if hes gonna get that much usage at a bigger school, especially of we also add a couple of guards that like to shoot (Evans, Enis, Miles). But I'm excited for the kid. I mentioned in an earlier post that I stumbled on him when I was looking up his teammate a few weeks back. I was like "this kid would be neat too," and what do ya know, hes here lol.

Just due to the size of the Big Ten, I’d think at least one useful C type would be needed.

This is the Big Ten. He can maintain his style but he better adapt. Hard for me to see success without a competent big guy. He doesn’t need 26 minutes a game, but he needs to be available when we need him. I’ve seen way too many losses in the last five years where we have gotten crushed inside.

One thing this year’s tournament showed us was the resurrection of the inside game and the big.

Yep. Skilled big guys are the toughest ones to find/land in the portal but have to think they will do what they can to bring in some size.

Just wait till Florida's 7'9" guy starts playing. :)

Yeah I would expect him to shoot a fair bit less than that but you never know. Mike Mitchell actually attempted more 3's at Minnesota than he got at Pepperdine. Patterson only averaged 0.5 fewer field goal attempts than he had at Charlotte. Surprisingly when these low and mid-major guys transfer up to Minnesota they don't have a big decrease in role.

Hopefully if Durkin gets more like 150 attempts he can bring that % up a little bit. In general when guys take more 3's their % goes down so I would assume it could go the other way.

Thats true, the Gophers really just haven't been able to shoot either tho. We had those wonderful rosters where we weren't very big and we had limited shot makers. The last time they were even kind of good, they had Payne, a lightning quick PG and 2 guys who could knock down the 3 in Mitchell and Christie.

I wasn't saying I completely agree with his roster construction. Personally I'd like 2 bigs over 6'10 on roster. Dont know why I keep going back to these two, but I like Noah Amenhauser and Duke Brennan.

No ties here. I just think they'd be fun additions lol

Don't know if Gopher Crew knows anything or not, but......
In the past it seems like Gopher Crew's sources are other media sources. So I'm guessing their "confirmation" is Travis Banham's crystal ball on 247. Think of Gopher Crew as an aggregator and educated guesser. They've never really seemed to have any inside sources; they just throw stuff out there and try to sound confident.

It's worth noting that the starting center on our Final Four team was 6'9" and 265 pounds. Good size but not a giant. I would feel good if Nacho could find someone with that amount of heft.

Just to have some fun with numbers, the highest 3PA per game rate we have seen at Minnesota in the last 15 years was sophomore Gabe Kalscheur at 7.2 (223 total, 34%) which was a decrease from his 42% when he shot 188 as a freshman.

Sophomore Jamison Battle 7.0 attempts per game, 190 total at 31% and freshman Jamison 7.1, 205 attempts in 29 games at 37%
Junior Marcus Carr at 6.5 attempts, 189 total at 32%
Senior Nate Mason at 6.4 attempts, 197 total at 39%
Senior Andre Hollins at 6.0 attempts, 199 total at 41%
Senior Blake Hoffarber at 6.5 attempts, 203 total at 39%

Bobby Durkin attempted 7.8 threes per game (256 total) which is a rate we simply have not seen. He improved from his freshman year where he shot 34% on 174 attempts so that is encouraging to see he actually got better as he took on a more prominent role in the offense.

This is correct.

It's the big 10 so you will always need some size, but I also don't think you want to force a size addition to just be big. If you run out a good group of shooters you can really take advantage of slower footed defenders and pull them away from the basket and make them defend.

A physical “shorter” center was my initial thought as well given potential concerns around the cost of a true C but the question may be if that type of player fits into Niko’s offense.

Did you notice the spacing UConn had yesterday vs South Carolina? That was picture perfect!!!!

Is GH becoming the subsidiary of other teams transfer portal news?

Meh. For my money, I like having a thread devoted to generic transfer portal news as the title of the thread suggests. We have enough Gopher specific threads including the Niko roster construction thread to deal with Gopher news. If we start opening threads specific to other teams, I'll agree with you.
