Frank Mitchell Enters Portal (UPDATE: Big Frank to St. Bonaventure)

I'm hoping we hold on to Asuma but I figure we will lose everyone else.

Based upon everything that Asuma has said.....he wants to play for Minnesota. Hoping that doesn't change regardless of who's coaching. Believe his younger brother is also signed on to play baseball for the Gophers. So...playing close to home is clearly a draw for him. Seems to be a more common thing with some of the better outstate talent in Minnesota. Koi could have gone damn near anywhere if he had wanted, for example.

Not all that surprising. Makes sense to keep his options open and big guys tend to command a ton of interest in the portal because there aren't nearly as many quality big men compared to guards available usually.

Hopefully it works out for him to be back with the Gophers next season.

Meh. Frank is not a big loss inspite of a decent showing the later part of the season.

The newbie HC will have to be able to bring in better talent than Frank. That is the expectation. And the talent is out there.

Agreed. Frank was serviceable at end of the season but I have to believe there’s available bigs out there to fill his spot.

There will be 10-15 Mitchells in the portal. Plenty enough to complement "Garcia" in the paint.

Frank is a nice player, would I like to keep him, sure. That said, he's not changing any teams trajectory in any sort of huge way.
Yep, he is a very solid bench big who can come in and give you 15-20 solid minutes. Can't fault him at all for putting his name out there to see what options are available. Hopefully ens up that he is back with us next year but if he moves on he moves on.

Well, so far there aren't many good ones in the portal. It's not just that anyway. It's a good idea to have more than one on the roster. Surely watching Gopher basketball over the years should have taught you that.

Do you really expect to get a significant number of players this offseason who will change "a team's trajectory in any sort of huge way?"

Has there ever been a Gopher BB player who entered the portal and then wound up playing the next season for Minnesota?

I'm pretty sure the answer is "no," but there have been more than a few players from other teams who have returned to those teams after entering the portal. For example, after Patrick Chambers was fired from PSU, about four or five players from there entered the portal but Shrewsberry was able to talk a few of them into returning.
