New Coach Short List

Saunders has NBA coaching experience and is young with flair like PJ Fleck. That relates to players that want to get to the league. He can surround himself with good assistant coaches, but Saunders is recognizable name that kids know.
They know him as a failure of an NBA coach...yeah I bet they will be dancing in the streets about it!

If Saunders is such a great idea, why hasn't anyone else made a play for him?

Just tough when he’s behind Pitino in the same conference and we could have had Dutcher 4 years ago. I’m no Pitino fan.
In one of the few instances in which I actually have some "insider" info - trust me, Dutcher was never going to come here four years ago, nor is he coming this time. Besides, would the program really want someone who is 65 years old to rebuild a program, which likely will take years?. (And would a coach who may have retirement thoughts on the horizon really want to start over elsewhere and undergo a massive rebuild?)

I wouldn’t want him now. Good to know he didn’t want to come here when we hired Ben.

Fair enough. Very reasonable response. I will say that the race of the next coach is not at all a concern of mine. But your explanation is something I will consider more moving forward. Truce!

(y)
I don't mean to get in the way of the truce-- well done by both of you on that. But most people don't really understand what DEI fully means (me included, i would guess) but I saw an explanation that i will paraphrase here with names.

DEI doesn't mean that Ben Johnson gets the job because he is black, it means that Richard Pitino doesn't get the job when there are more qualified black candidates.

If you're going to push race and gender baiting dogwhistles like "DEI" that are being widely used to target women and minorities all over the country....then be prepared to be called out on it. Don't play innocent or act like YOU are the one being unfairly targeted.
Apparently you can't read. That wasn't even close to his point.

The short list needs to begin and end with Will Wade.

Make it so, Coyle.

Will Wade is going to get a job with a lot of NIL money whether he jumps this year or next.

That's not going to be at Minnesota.

Again....my point was that "DEI" is a dogwhistle that's being utilized to push a nasty narrative. Particularly in the past year or so. I don't think that was golfing18now's intention.

DEI, when put in play, means race, identity and gender quotas first, competence second. Smart people are running from it because the results are in and it didn't work.

Got it. White coaches only. Otherwise it's DEI.
Yes stocker, if it reinforces your view of the world, everyone who doesn’t like identity based hiring, hates minorities. You can put it on your next blog.

Now let’s move on and talk about the next coach.

Wrong. Smart people realize that it's being deployed as a convenient excuse, often without any evidence, that many of the countries issues are being caused by women and minorities. Why look for an actual culprit when the blame can easily be assigned to women and minorities?

I'm against it being used as a scapegoat....which is happening more and more.

Yes I agreed with you. Everyone who isn’t on the far left hates minorities and females. Now can we talk about the next coach?

I am fine with trying for one of the big established names, but overall think the better option is someone hungry who is experiencing success at a mid-major or lower. Splashes are great but that wears off quickly and then it is time to play.

How about Dawn Staley?
Honestly, a great coach is a great coach regardless of gender or melatonin in the skin. I would cheer on a great female coach who broke the glass ceiling and led Gopher men's basketball to a Big10 championship. Speed dial Cheryl Reeves and find out her interest.

Could care less about woman or melatonin, but it would be an experiment. The game is different and recruiting connections are completely different.

And he was ahead of TJ Otzelberger when he was at UNLV. Pitino was made for the NIL era and learned from his time here. I get the hesitancy (I was too but have been warming up to him the last couple of weeks). Probably helps that CSU is one of the hottest teams in CBB.

Serious: Dawn Staley would be a FANTASTIC hire. Home run hire.

But she just signed a new contact with a base salary of $4m.

We can't afford her.
There's no indication she has any desire to coach Men's BB and if she did, it wouldn't be at MN.
