All Things Gopher Baseball

Hoping these close losses to good teams will pay dividends in conference play.

Keep playing like this and gotta think the wins will come. Encouraging outing from Remington today. I'm not quite as high on Virginia as some who had them #2 in the country but that is a good lineup.

Absolute bomb to left from Martin puts Gophers up 6 through five and a half. Let's go bullpen!

Gophers answered Beaver's three-run bottom of 7th with three runs of their own in top of 8th, and finish with a 10-4 win.

Sperry with two more scoreless innings to close it. Another good start from Thorsteinson. Fitzgerald with a two run single and solo dinger, Berkland with a two-run home run and outstanding catch to help avoid a crooked inning. Martin:s home run broke it open.

I believe that is first win over a top ten team since 2018 (@ Texas Christian).

A few random thoughts...

Anytime I see a team blow a 10-0 lead (as Ohio State did to Alabama), I always think back to the 1984 Twins meltdown in Cleveland. Ouch.

That is a big list above...still taking some getting used to the west coast schools being in the conference. It will be interesting to see how they do, how much they raise the level of play, how many bids the conference gets going forward, etc.

Arizona State split a pair at UCLA midweek. Their closer has had a couple rough outings, but pretty good start overall, and will be tough test for Gophers this weekend. That program could be a force in Big 12 going forward with their decision to go to 34 scholarships (pending House settlement approval).

Of course it's early, but the number one team in RPI is a future Gopher opponent: Kansas. Counsell homered early in a wild 12-8 walk off win over Omaha in their home opener yesterday. High Point off to a good start also (albeit versus light competition).

Every year there seems to be a stretch of bad weather early in the season where games are lost or played in rough conditions, and I think perhaps this is the year where something happens on moving the schedule back a bit...and nada. When even indoor games are cancelled, perhaps they should revisit it. Two weeks would make a big difference, in my opinion.

Let's go Gophers...get it done in the desert!

The Gophers opponents over the next month are definitely a "muderer's row".

3 road games @ Arizona State, 7-2 record with a 13 RPI
3 home games vs Pudue, 8-0 record with a 32 RPI
2 home games vs Kansas, 8-0 record with 1 RPI
3 road games @ Oregon, 6-2 record with 55 RPI and ranked #11
3 home games vs High Points, 8-1 record and 54 RPI

I, for one, like it. Maybe could have scheduled a break in there somewhere, but I believe you get better by playing better competition. I think these guys may have a lot of confidence once BIG season starts.

Terrible start. Neels airmails it into CF on a SB then drops another pitch on a SB attempt and now Richter bobbles a routine grounder. All of this is in the second without recording an out.

Back to back walks given up by Selvig to start B6. Looks like they left him in a bit too long. Hopefully Whelan can bail us out. ASU bullpen has been lights out this year. Can't give up the lead

Gophers catch a break as Knoll smokes one to second base but off the glove for an error...5-2 Gophers...

He hit that pretty hard. I think they have him a bit for that.

Bases loaded and no outs now for ASU. Gotta get out of this.

Does look like the gamecast has it for a hit even though the broadcast stated error.

Double play was big, but that was rough...bases were loaded 8 pitches in...5-5 with two innings to go...

ASU gets another run by Sperry. Not going to lie, this one will hurt.
