Fire Ben Johnson

The only time I see his stuff is when it gets posted here. And everytime it is, I am shocked that he is still employed given the stupidity of what he writes.
At this point, I envision Shooter being like Milton in Office Space, relegated to the basement and not even getting paid, but still showing up for work regardless.

lol.....can totally picture that.....classic.

That said, we should be realistic and willing to walk before we run. The good news is that our footholds will be sturdy. In other words, any Big Ten job is sought after and valued. It's exceedingly rare for Big Ten teams to have their coach poached. If we find the right guy, we'll almost certainly be able to retain him.
Yep, it won't happen overnight. But the nice thing about basketball is it can happen pretty quick. There are a number of examples this year of long-dormant programs doing really well.

Find a coach with rich friends.
Find a coach with the ability to inspire people. That's the foundation of everything. That was a good bit of Clem's effectiveness. Read his introduction to the book he wrote where he describes the state of Minnesota high school basketball when he was hired here. He and his wife drove around when they were here for his interview and observed more hockey nets in driveways than basketball goals. He remarked to her that, if he took the job, they had some work to do. He doesn't get enough credit for the basketball culture here that he had a big role in helping create, including through behind-the-scenes advocacy. The T-Wolves emergence at the same time was the other big piece, of course, but Haskins and the Gophers' tournament runs in 1989 and 1990 did a lot to make this a good basketball town.

We need someone who can inspire people and move mountains like that.

Clem was crooked. Cooked it up with Mac Boston. Ran over Dienhart. Turned his program into its own athletic department. No thanks.

Clem didn't become crooked until later. (First real issue was what the Chris Webber incident?) That is why the Sweet Sixteen and Elite Eight still count.

If the rules still mattered I would be with you but what Clem did wouldn't even be fined today let alone punished. (Not that that is a good thing)

Utah is like 20 spots ahead of us in the NET and has been better than us the last two years. Their coach actually had a track record of success when he was hired and wasn't gifted Dawson Garcia. Johnson could win out and not match Smith's conference winning % over the last 4 years. The local media acting like this is somehow a "close" decision is absolutely baffling.

UU decided that four years without a NCAA berth is all they needed to see. Objectively, someone like Smith should actually get more grace than someone like Johnson because of his prior track record of success that you refer to. It's reasonable to wonder whether he still might have been able to make it happen there, but the clock ran out on him.

If anyone has an explanation why it's not happening at Utah while BYU and Utah State do well, I'd like to hear it. Smith himself had USU in the top 15 a few years ago.

Obviously, the money to pay players isn't what it is at BYU. Is that the only thing? Is USU flush with money by comparison? Has Smith done a poor job inspiring donations and fundraising, or is that an institutional problem? These questions are pertinent to Minnesota. Replacing Johnson isn't a total solution if the U admin is dropping the ball otherwise. I see Utah as similar to Minnesota: big city, high enrollment, plenty of wealthy alumni, but it ain't happening NIL-wise.

I'd love to sit down with Smith and pick his brain about this. He's a thoughtful guy and would certainly have a lot of insights.

It is definitely strange how a handful of local media types have latched onto this idea that Ben should be back next year based on what has happened this year.

If anything though, Utah making this move actually helps Coyle when he does finally pull the trigger and fire Ben between now and the end of the season. Pretty easy to justify firing a coach who was less successful then another coach that was hired at the same time and was just let go. Not that he needs an outside justification, but it doesn't hurt.

Our standards are lower than Utah
As long as we fire Johnson then I would say our standards are very similar to Utah's. Reading the ESPN story you could basically use it as a template for the story when Johnson is fired. Couple nice wins this year, no NCAA tournaments.....lot of similarities in the two situations.

I put the “Comparable 4” thread to bed earlier this season, but it is kind of interesting what each coach has done since Ben was hired:

TJ Otzelberger is a smashing success at Iowa State and being named as a legit candidate for major job openings.

In Year 2 Micah Shrewsberry took Penn State to the NCAA and won a game, parlaying that into a job at Notre Dame, where he’s struggling in Year 2.

Smith took Utah to the NIT Final 4 in Year 3, in Year 4 has them in position for a spot in the College Basketball Crown or NIT, but then gets fired with 2 weeks left in the season.

In Year 3 Ben took the Gophers to the NIT 2nd round after a pair of last place finishes, but now in Year 4 is simply trying to stay ahead of the Big Ten Tournament cutline.

Doogie claims Utah has big NIL while poor Ben has none. This does not seem to be true but it makes a nice excuse.

If Ben had PJ's personality the media would have a completely different standard. Although the media typically does not call for a coach's head, they wait until they are fired to let their opinions be known.

So I just checked, Shooter is 78 so maybe Doogie thinks he is going to retire soon and is working to get as many stupid takes out there as possible so that he will be considered for Shooter's old gig when the time comes.

Shooter will die on the job, just like Sid.

Like Sid, this is Charley’s life, he knows nothing else. Keeling over in a press box is likely his preferred way to go. Honestly, the Pioneer Press could have AI write the column post-death and nobody would know the difference.

Still waiting for the emergence of a media type who would fulfill this boards high standards for information? That is, in comparison to people like me, writing from my recliner and others from their office, car, or mom’s basement couch!
